I feel like whenever people watch this one they never notice Wendy setting Seulgi's sweater on fire in the beginning lol. It sets the tone so perfectly and I thought more people noticed but no one ever really talks about it during the first watch lol.
The song's title is Russian Roulette. The MV is colorful. Later on, they are killing each other. Red Velvet always surprise us. They can be badass, quirky and more. I'm a fan of sickening transitions but what you said made me appreciate MVs like this that are simple yet really impressive. Story seems like they are killing each other for the same guy that they all love. The hints started at the beginning when Wendy lit the thread of Seulgi's top. 🔥

God i miss these type of music videos so much, when the color palette, texture, acting and song was enough to keep you entertained. Nowadays (because Blackpink has set the bar really high) most idols are constantly trying to have 500 different sets, outfits, and higher-budget-looking MV's, and companies tend to forget that less is more. I love this music video and this song, also love your reactions!
Nowadays they rely heavily on symbolism in sets to convey the message they want through the mv. Since the primary goal now of almost every group is to break into the US market, I cant really blame them.
@RV Because Blackpink set a bar really high when it comes to music videos, like i said. I've been also listening to kpop for years and something shifted when BP released DDDD, with their hundred different sets and expensive outfits that even they have a hard time each comeback raising that bar because, how much more money can a company throw at a MV? HYLT had easily 10 different sets for a 3 minute MV, plus background dancers, outfits, accesories, etc. That's millions of dollars. So yes, Blackpink raised a bar when it comes to music videos, and yes the kpop scene changes all the time, never said it didn't, that's why i said i miss Russian Roulette's types of MV's.
Paul, I don't know how familiar you are with the show The Simpsons, but there is a cartoon within the cartoon called Itchy and Scratchy which features a very similar crudely drawn cat and mouse which are like an uber-violent and graphic version of Tom and Jerry. The cat and mouse here were meant to evoke the kind of cartoon violence of Itchy and Scratchy. Based on the lyrics the song is about someone obsessive about a love interest comparing the game of love to a game of Russian roulette in its randomness and one's inability to control the game. It's also evocative of "love me or you never know what the consequences might be, am I the empty cylinder or the loaded one." The video is invoking the feel of girls that are trying to eliminate their romantic rivals who are also playing the game of love. It pretty clearly draws inspiration from the films Heathers (1988) and Massacre at Central High (1976). In the case of the latter film, the scene where a girl pushes another off the diving board into a pool that was draining dry the moment before almost certainly comes from that film as there is a scene in that film where a kid is murdered in a similar manner using deception rather than a shove.
The way how you described Red Velvet is just accurate because everyone thinks just the same. They have their genre of their own and I think from all of the groups I have known in kpop, the boldest statement ever given by them is that the comeback is a NEW concept and something they haven't tried before. Others say it but still has similar or familiar elements from their previous releases and here's Red Velvet always excites everyone with what they will be up to next. It's always refreshing that they never run out of concepts to showcase. At this point I'll actually recommend to you Paul to do a reaction marathon of Red Velvet's music videos. It's all worth it. You can continue with Peek-A-Boo cause that's hella interesting to watch. Storyline was amazing

Love how at the start you thought it was cute and there were no assassinations, then by the end everyone is killing each other lol. Really liked the stationary shots too, it was kind of a nice contrast to the high colour shots in the sets, so we could pay more attention to them. As a Journalism graduate, your reactions to the MV and the way you explain the technicalities brings back memories of Film Art class we had in college. It's one of my favorite subjects ever! I never looked at MVs and Films the same after that class 'cause I was always focusing on the technical aspects 😂

Totally agree about RV being in their own category, their songs, concepts, videos thread like everywhere and they can always surprise. I'd ask for you to do Bad Boy but that's just because I love both the song and the video :P If you want a trip, though, try Rookie. (Honestly, though, in the end you might eventually react to all of their videos, each of them is like a world in itself)
I'm so glad you watched this, this is probably my ultimate favourite K-pop song in existence! The video itself is very aesthetically pleasing to watch and Russian Roulette was the song that roped me back into K-pop after I stopped listening to it for years. I was walking into an Asian grocery store and this song instantly caught my attention. If you did not already know, the concept of Red Velvet is a duality, "Red" being their cutesy and brighter personas and "Velvet" being their darker, sensual side. That's how you get Bad Boy, Peek-a-Boo, Psycho (Velvet) and then you have Russian Roulette, Ice Cream Cake, Red Flavour (Red). They broke a lot of the traditional K-pop girl group image/concept that often only sticks to one side of the coin, and that makes them so much more popular to all the demographics.
Hey Paul great video, when I saw u reacting to Red Velvet again I immediately stop what I was doing, I recommend you react to Bad Boy next you will love everything done there especially the lighting that they did.
I love Red Velvet music videos and I think they're a genius, but seeing a film director react to them, I gain a whole new level of respect and knowledge about the videos which makes me appreciate it more.
i remember whats creepy in this MV the first time i watched this is not the killing but their pokerface its like they are staring at my soul. i didnt even notice the killing until the bridge..
Other MVs with kind of creepy concepts are Twice's Likey (very subtle) and Red Velvet's Zimzalabim. At least the ones that comes off the top of my mind. Well, Sunmi's Noir and in some ways Lalalay and Siren too.
Ahhhh, I love this MV/Song! This along with Cookie Jar, Sappy and Peek a Boo are probably my favorite MVs from them! I agree about the retro feel, it's super fun and I always loved how colorful the MV was and how it contrasted against the darker themes. It's just a cool MV overall. (also, the sections where it's clip art-ish and they're dancing is so satisfying to watch, idk why lol)

An odd question, but have you ever watched any performances on Korean music shows? I wonder if you would have the same reaction as me.. the cuts and angles are awful! I think they're trying to make it "dynamic and energetic" but the focus is off and you barely see any of the choreography! It drives me bonkers.
