In a report shot entirely on film, NBC News’ Gadi Schwartz tells us about the growing demand for vintage cameras as photography shoots up in popularity. The boom has been fueled by younger generations, social media and a desire to slow down in a hyperconnected world. When setting out to report this story, Gadi realized there was only one way to really do it justice. Take a behind-the-scenes look as Gadi shoots a few rolls with photographer Jason Kummerfeldt in Los Angeles, with their journey captured on a film camera.

@GettingNegative

I don’t believe in a shortage. Old gear is being taken out of closets everyday, camera are being repaired everyday, it’s just a demand issue. People who hoard to have the appearance of being an analog photographer are the only Hangup. But that’s minimal.

@@xxGravyBabyxx sadly for most of these manufacturers won’t bother because the market is still very niche remember back in its day Kodak was selling 800 million rolls of film a year and last year they only sold 14 million so for the camera manufacturers they probably can’t see much money in film right now. @Phillip Banes I was born in 02 and have a lot of memories of playing with disposable cameras as a young kid. Of course I was born later so I have more memories of my mom's digital p&s, but I don't think it's that unlikely that someone who grew up through the 90s has many memories with film cameras. Film also has some advantages over digital no aliasing, pixelation, and a "warmer" image Sometimes different is better depending on what you're trying to do Similar reasons are also why some with retro games prefer to use crt televisions to modern displays Digital's great yes but it isn't always better
@GettingNegative
@GettingNegative Год назад
Warmer isn’t really a difference since you can add warmth to any image when digitized or wet printing.
@megalon84
@megalon84 Год назад
I shot on film for years in the early-mid 2000s and defended it when digital was creeping up in popularity. Those aren't advantages that you listed. Film has a finite "resolution" (where detail is resolved and not just a blur) and it is far lower than what modern digital cameras can achieve. Pixelation at 500% magnification doesn't matter when at normally viewed levels and distances the digital image is that much sharper. "Warmer" isn't a unique thing. Color temperature, saturation, contrast... These are all things that can be adjusted easily in both the camera settings or in post on a computer. There is film grain which is sometimes a preferred aesthetic, but that can be added in convincing fashion with digital filters in some devices or editing software.
@GettingNegative
@GettingNegative Год назад
@@35mm21 So to you, resolution is the most important factor? How do you know how many people are shooting or not shooting large format?
@GettingNegative
@GettingNegative Год назад
@@35mm21 Large format looks like a good way to ruin a nice day to me. I don't think pixelation or resolution are even a part of the conversation honestly, because that's digital. You can enjoy film photography without ever digitizing anything in a darkroom.

@@35mm21 645 medium format has a resolution equivalent to over 300 mp. 35mm is about 90mp. Same goes for movies. Movies shot on 70mm film has a resolution up to 19K. Not to mention the dynamic range. I love the process of black and white film and darkroom work. Old mechanical cameras are a thing of beauty. What I can't understand at all is paying $12+ for a roll of color film, plus another $15 or more plus postage to have it developed and scanned so you can then edit it in Lightroom. That just feels like digital with extra steps and expense. Also if you want prints virtually every lab is inkjet printing from scans too. There's almost no color wet prints to be had unless you want to pay through the nose for them from just a few shops. Short of shooting a nostalgia roll here and there, the price and process of color film makes no sense to me.
@jerrell1169
@jerrell1169 Год назад
It's easy enough to scan them yourself, if you shoot often enough home developing is also easy. I agree with film prices though, even the cheapest b/w is around 10$ a roll, pro films like Portra hitting 18$. You *can* bulk-load cinema film but you need to go through the entire process of stripping the rem jet and home devving. But really it's just a matter of returning to how photography was in the past. The prices have been artificially low for quite some time and now it's all just coming back to form, the average consumer shot less than a roll a month. Even amateur photographers would only shoot 2-3 rolls a month. We're spoiled now with digital photography, rightfully so, but we can't expect Fuji or Kodak to try to compete with a format that costs 0$ to shoot.
