Film SLR vs. Point and Shoot | Canon A1 vs. Olympus XA2

Welcome to this week's video...see which camera will win in the ultimate showdown between a film SLR and a film point and shoot (Canon A1 versus Olympus XA2).
Overall the SLR was obviously higher quality but I’d say the area where I saw the biggest difference was in the sky and corners. There is a lot of vignetting with the XA2 and it doesn’t do great with a big empty sky. There’s also a lot of grain in these areas because of the vignetting but this is more for landscape shots, other street shots turned out much better and there’s less vignetting.
Shooting film really slows down the photography process because you have to take the time to really compose an image and you have a finite number of photos. The XA2 is the first film camera I ever shot with and immediately noticed how it slowed down the process. With metering and focusing the A1 slows it down even more.
The XA2 is obviously a point and shoot so you don’t have to worry about metering or exposure really, you can adjust the ISO to over or underexpose and change the focusing distance. There are three options and I’ve gotten really quick with adjusting the focus using the furthest option, this little mountain 95% of the time so it’s super easy to compose and snap the shot. It’s also great for street photography because its so small and inconspicuous.
The A1 on the other hand definitely makes things slower. You can shoot in shutter or aperture priority mode and I usually end up shooting in shutter priority and just adjust the shutter to get to the desired aperture. That metering process definitely slows things down and then the longest part is the focusing. The manual focus lens makes this harder to use for street photography especially when shooting a moving subject and it’s a bit more obvious than the XA2.
It was fun comparing these two film cameras and both definitely have their strengths and weaknesses but overall I’d rather shoot with the Canon A1 mostly because I want a higher quality image.
Anyway that’s the video, thanks so much for watching! If you made it far please like and subscribe if you haven’t already, I really appreciate the support and will catch ya in the next one!

Great video! Your pictures turn out great, I’ve been meaning to ask if you overexpose by a stop with the Olympus? I’m currently putting my first roll through it, and the pictures I see other people take often seem underexposed. I could imagine that a lot of the models have faulty light meters after 40 years, so tricking them could be a good option. Will see how they come back anyways, but yours seems to give great results

Hey thanks Tristan! I don't usually overexpose with the Olympus and didn't overexpose any of the photos in this video. That makes sense though I would just see how the roll turns out and adjust from there...hopefully it turns out!

i just saw a XA2 on fb marketplace for a cheap price and wanted to see some videos of how it is. i remember a lot of film photographer talking about this because of how compact it is and how good picture quality is. now, I already have a Olympus Epic zoom. do you think this should be still a good buy or at least add to my arsenal or is it an overkill. Also, love my A1. i dont even think i need anything else right now because thats always the camera that i pull out from my shelf. haha
@CodyMorin
@CodyMorin 3 года назад
Yea I have an epic zoom as well! I love my XA2 and for a tiny point and shoot it does have great image quality, i just wish I had the flash attachment for it. It might be a bit overkill but if it's a good deal why not ahaha...here's another video where I used the XA2 for some portraits. Hope it helps you make a decision! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aipxacW2fZ8.html

Really nice video, and a cool comparison, don't think I've seen that before. I hav'em both, I feel much safer using a camera like the A-1, where I have full control, whilst with a point and shoot like the XA2 it's just to hope for the best. The great advantage is the compactness, you can bring a camera, without having to carry a large slr.
@CodyMorin
@CodyMorin 2 года назад
Thanks Kalle! Yea i agree, I like using the XA2 if I don't care too much about the end results and just want to have a camera on me.

How the hell are u able to shoot at 200 iso in this lightsituation, without underexposing or blurry images ?

Ahahaha the lighting actually wasn't bad so was easy to shoot at 200!

I wouldn't call the XA2 a point and shoot. It's more of a rangefinder. Nevertheless, nice images. Damn.....a bell phone booth!? Where was this filmed?
@CodyMorin
@CodyMorin 3 года назад
Thanks Bert! Yea fair enough definitely is like a rangefinder. Lol it was in Toronto just off Lakeshore!
@atroche1978
@atroche1978 3 года назад
@@CodyMorin I retract my statement regarding the XA2 being more of a rangefinder. I own the XA and thought the XA2 was similar in design but after reading up on it I stand corrected. Unlike the XA where you have control of the aperture, somewhat the shutter, and more precise focusing, the XA2 only has 3 focus points and everything else is left up to the camera. So yeah, you might be correct.
@CodyMorin
@CodyMorin 3 года назад
@@atroche1978 Ahhh i thought they were more or less the same but yeah because it's mostly automatic other than being able to manually adjust the 3 focus points and the iso felt like it was point and shoot but it's defs got a bit of a rangefinder feel...maybe a future video topic ahah
@pilsplease7561
@pilsplease7561 3 года назад
@@atroche1978 Yeah camera gets the exposure by light meter. Which it reads and then sets the shutter speed and etc.

...in analog film the camera body has zero influence in the final product... ...since both had the same film stock what you really compared in your test was the lenses...
@CodyMorin
@CodyMorin 3 года назад
Appreciate the insight Gualbert, I actually had no idea! But 100% makes sense
@pilsplease7561

That is in fact basically true, Lenses do make the biggest difference. All cameras even digital cameras are that way. Lenses make the biggest difference. Though analog is better because digital uses artificially created colors that are set by the manufacturer whereas film tends to create what is actually present its also more sensitive to different light spectrums than digital is.
@voradorlinux
@voradorlinux 3 года назад
@@pilsplease7561 True, but that's a property carried out by the film stock not the camera body (which is the argument I brought up). In analog photography the quality of the end product is influenced by the film stock and the lens. The only role the camera body has is to provide proper shutter functions, sometimes a light meter, and a dark box to contain the components. In digital photography the camera body has the sensor (colour science) and therefore has a vital role on the end product. In other words, if I have a Portra800 film roll with a CarlZeiss 50mm f2.8 lens, I can yield same results if coupled with any mechanical camera bodies (provided they are not toy cameras) regardless of brand or model. In the other hand, if I couple a CarlZeiss 50mm f2.8 with a digital camera body results will vary depending on the camera body I pair it with. Cheers!
@pilsplease7561
@pilsplease7561 3 года назад
@@voradorlinux Thats somewhat true, results can wildly vary with film cameras due to quality of lenses and type of shutter mechanism employed and this is something from testing I know is true, A uncoated lens i had from 1919 which i shot with in a Old Speed Graphic from 1927 was a fantastic camera the lens was so creamy and soft as to be beautiful with good black and white film. Ive also had wildly vivid images from a uncoated ww2 era Zeiss Ikon Folding Camera. it depends on the lens quality. Some of the older lenses flaws aide to create better images. I can tell you some lenses are sharp but flat and do impact colors that you get, Ive shot 2 cameras with 2 equal lenses from different companies from the same era with the same f stop and etc both coated and one was very sharp and colors popped the other was sharp and dull even though they both had the exact same specs on paper and same style of lens and same coating grade.

Disagree. The overall tone of your conclusions was that you'd decided beforehand what you'd say. The blue colours of the sky from the XA2 were actually blue, and not overdone. Whereas, repeatedly the skies in the A1 were just washed out. Really obvious. All the stuff about vignetting etc, mean little when the actual colours equate little with what can be seen with one's own eyes.
