They missed because they were afraid which is what the film is about legend vs fact William was drunk all the time to numb himself to kill back in his day "it's a hell of a thing killing a man you take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have " and also I love watching a new generation discover classic films but you step on all the best lines commentating! But good reaction young man

The character of William Munny is probably based on the worst killer of the Old West, John Wesley Hardin.

'Tombstone' from 1993 is another good western that you should check out if you haven't already. As for the lawlessness of the era, it was definitely a different time back then. I think things were a little rough around the edges until around World War II. The Prohibition era in the early 1900s was also a rough period in our history, though probably a little less wild than the period that this film depicts.

Big Whiskey isn't even supposed to be a tough town. They mention other towns they consider "tough," especially in Texas and Kansas (Big Whiskey is in Wyoming), and partly respect Bill for having worked there. He doesn't want to let Big Whiskey become like that, so he's goes very hard. But his hypocrisy gets him. He goes soft on the cowboy who did the cutting, which starts the whole chain of events.

“And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.” I think some people miss this obvious allegory. Munny is Death on his white horse.

In many towns of the old West madames were highly regarded in their communities. They paid taxes, were astute business women, in some cases amassed fortunes im real estate, and even contributed to charity. Houses of "soiled doves" were also drinking establishments. Madames made more money selling liquor than through their prostitutes. Prostitutes were protected by bouncers hired to keep the peace in the madamed houses. We must realize that women had few opportunities for work. A single woman could do domestic work, which barely paid living expenses, wash the clothes of single men, or become prostitutes. Sometimes the ladies of the evening were also married like Big Nose Kate, who hot her name because she was always sticking her nose in other people's business and was partner with Doc Holliday. Wyatt Earp's common law wife was also a prostitute. My point is that prostitutes in the Old West were viewed differently except by the women of the community. One state I know of that still allows prostitution is Nevada, with Reno being famous for its liberal attitude towards the oldest profession. "First came the miners to work in the mines Next came the ladies who lived on the line" Old Western mining adage.
