I think two things are true here. He's got bad hands, and the Chargers are misusing him. His confidence is shot. His future really depends on two things: his next coach, and finding a good sports psychologist.
QJ’s inconsistency in training camp, preseason, & the regular season is indicative of his college career so no one should be surprised. His inconsistency is maybe why he wasn’t expected to be drafted in the 1st rd.
He’s still good just needs to be used right and get that confidence back like you said. I’d say avoid a sports psychologist, because I think he’s already over thinking things, but they could help with that, they could also make it worse even if they are normally a good sport psychologist. Just react and do, he has the ability
he dropped many passes in college. but no one knows how it will play. Manning could not win the big game at tennessee and lost first 3 playoff games. Andy Reid could not win the big game at philly.
Yeah, he might wanna hit the gym full-throttle during the offseason, because a player of his stature should NOT be getting pushed around by smaller DBs! 😳 The jury's still out on him in my book, being that it was only his rookie season and all ... but perhaps Deano saw this draft pick as the last straw, and it gave him the fuel to eventually fire Telesco once and for all 🧐 In the meantime, I'm willing to give QJ a second chance in 2024! But if he doesn't turn things around by then or by 2025... 👋 🥾
Oh well, with the Chargers’ already out of playoff contention, they might as well force feed Quentin every game, drops and lack of separation be damned. See if they can salvage-develop him for next year.
Forget him already, problem child with a weak mind. He took the money, now play like a 1st rounder, period, or trade him before the league finds out what Charger fans already know, he sux.
@@dandeitch3459 Yeah, my girlfriend and I were watching the draft and couldn't believe the Chargers' good luck that Zay Flowers had dropped right into their lap. Finally we were going to get a true burner with playmaking moves. And then they drafted Quentin...
Chargers fan here, I wanted flowers, chargers nation wanted flowers. So to see the difference in the two is frustrating, but Mike Williams was horrible his first year but developed into a great WR. But I should add the way they use him is incorrect, he’s just not the guy they want him to be. If I see no change next year I’m labeling him a bust
@@smokindragn1 "No first round pick should be wasted on a WR?" LOL ... oh, how hindsight is in fact 20/20! 👀 If every team in the NFL over the last 5 decades had only listened to you, then guys like Jerry Rice, Tim Brown, Lynn Swann, Michael Irvin, and every other HoF championship-winning WR who was drafted in the *1ST ROUND* wouldn't have been a bunch of wasted picks...🙄
Draft night I told my friends and family there was 1 guy I didn’t want the chargers to draft and it was Quentin Johnston. I was disappointed when it happened and tried to convince myself maybe I was wrong and he could be great. Hoping he can turn it around but I was hoping for Addison or Zay.
There's nothing about him that was better than Zay Flowers coming out of the draft. He's a bigger, slower, less explosive version of Mike Williams. We don't need that if we have Mike Williams.
As a Ravens fan I didn’t understand that either. You don’t need a Mike Williams 2.0 who IS GOING TO BE a project. Zay proved that he was a better receiver in a worse scheme with BC
Quentin Johnson reminds me of a guy my team drafted in the 1st round out of TCU almost a decade ago; Josh Doctson. Both where the same weight and height combo (6'4 210-220) and both have scissors for hands and can only effectively run 25% of the route tree. I didn't think it was a school issue with Josh but after seeing Quentin Johnson looking exactly like Josh (both selected in the late teens-early 20s of the 1st round) I'd NEVER draft a receiver out of TCU while the current staff is there. At least not day 1. That is a position they do not produce well.
I don't know how long you've been following the NFL, but I've been watching since 1970. It used to be that WRs, even 1st rnd picks, weren't expected to produce bigly as rookies. There have always been exceptions, like John Jefferson for the Chargers in as a rookie in 1978, who was a phenom the moment he first stepped on the field. WR was one of those positions, like QB, that took a season or two to fully develop, again, even if they were highly drafted. That has changed in the past 20 years or so, with WRs playing in pro-style offenses in college. First rnd WRs are expected to be pro-ready as rookies. That has been the case for Zay Flowers and Jordan Addison. Even Keenan Allen, who was a 3rd pick in 2013, was an immediate star as a rookie. But still, some very talented players are still going to need time to develop, they aren't going to be ready to beat NFL DBs as rookies. Mike Williams, the #7 pick in 2017, had a terrible rookie season, but eventually emerged as a stud WR. The Chargers drafted Vincent Jackson in the 2nd round in 2005. He didn't do much for two seasons, then in year 3 he became almost unstoppable and had a great career. So give QJ some time. He has the skills, when you see his college tape it's quite apparent. He's only just barely 21. Some players just need more time. I will not be surprised at all if at this time next season we're talking about QJ as a top 10 WR in the NFL.
@@timothyjackson2133 JJ was such an exception ar the time, a WR who came into the pros from college and immediately dominated NFL secondaries. Even Lance Alworth needed a season to adapt to the pros, he didn't do much as a rookie. JJ stepped into right situation at the right time as a rookie in 1978, with Fouts just beginning to emerge as an elite QB. He was a phenom starting from his very first game, catching two TD passes from Fouts. He led the league in TD receptions as a rookie (1978 was the last season the NFL only played 14 games.) JJ lead the league in receiving yards and TD catches in 1980, and in 1981 he wanted more money. The owner at the time, Gene Klein, refused to deal with him, and shipped JJ off to Green Bay, where his career died, due to the Packers QB woes that plagued Green Bay at that time.
That’s optimistic but realistically that depends on the individual player and QJ hasn’t had a good track record for work ethics since college. Hopefully he turns it around but doubtful and regardless it doesn’t mean that he was a good draft when so many others drafted below him immediately stepped up and showed immediate value. This isn’t a win. This is a train wreck that people are trying to cope and salvage. Chargers management is a laughing stock that is being meme’d right now.
I think part of the problem with QJ is his poor hand-eye coordination. If you look closely at that potentially game winning drop at GB, his eyes moved towards the sideline as if the ball's trajectory was going that way as it touched his hands when the ball clearly wasn't. I noticed this a lot in this year's tape.
I think you might be on to something. Justin Herbert's passes have a lot more zip on them than any of the college QBs QJ played with. He may not have the hand-eye coordination to track and catch a ball moving that fast.
@@econ0003 Spot on. Usually people who lack natural hand-eye coordination will catch with their chest because the reaction time, eye tracking, and depth perception is off. It becomes more of a problem if your QB has a rocket arm. If QJ was a boxer, he'd be the type that would get jabbed in the face the whole round.
Of all the potential 1st rd WR's from that draft... Quentin had *THE MOST* bust comments.... a lot of people seen this coming. Hopefully, he proves us wrong
I think the major problem is his limited route tree. If his best route is a 5 yard curl, thats a problem for a guy who was listed to have a second gear. That means hes not quick enough off the ball. Now, that just means they need to put him in motion and get him going as well as give him easy separation wins. What is funnier is that the dude almost has 10 inch hands. He needs to be at the jug machine night in and night out. Buy one for the house. Get those hands nfl ready.
I knew this would happen lol. All I saw on his tape were body catches, that never flies in the NFL. No clue how you rated him as your No. 1 Jackson, but kudos to always admitting to your misses. The good news is is he’s a physical specimen, so all he has to learn how to do is catch a football and he should be good lol. Just needs to keep hitting that Jugs machine!
The process of drafting QJ was always the problem, chargers needed an explosive shifty WR to compliment & not another slowish big WR. Drafting a project in the first with upside with all the bad injury luck the top4 WR's went through last year was a mistake. I'd have liked to see him get more screens & slants but i'm not sure if he knows the playbook fully yet or if you can trust him in the middle of the field either. Herbert targeted him in mof during training camp & he caused some ints being bullied off the ball. You can see Keenan & even the WR coach correcting him on plays & where to line up from the side line. He's missed blocking assignments too. Still time to improve but the next offseason he'll have to put in the work to do so.
Hopefully Harrison jr don’t turn out to be Johnston 2.0… but he was def a beast vs Michigan & is def a great player. But honestly… we don’t need another WR first pick. We need a great O Line. We can’t run or throw shit without it.
@@BATTOUSAIBEATSright now can't afford another high wr pick I go second or third but if he out shines QJ sheesh him and Mike will without Allen I don't want to see that offense 😅
@@BATTOUSAIBEATSdude I promise you Marvin Harrison jr won’t be qj 2.0 lmao… dude is gonna have an immediate impact in the nfl. He’s as elite as it gets for a college receiver.
I think he can be a good player but the Chargers didn't need a player of his ilk. Jordan Addison or Zay Flowers would be better complementary players to Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.
Yes he hasn’t been good, but he was drafted for upside. The chargers didn’t expect him to be a quality guy right away with Keenan, Mike, Palmer, and even guyton ahead of him. They also haven’t used him right. His strengths in college weren’t contested balls like Mike will, but he is amazing in open space. Get him the ball and let him work in open space. Drags, quick slants, screens, etc. Hope he pans out cuz he seems like a good guy
lol they didn’t draft a project guy in an all in year to hopefully be good down the road. They drafted him cause John Spanos and TT have a type and don’t know how to scout WRs. He’s a bust plain and simple
@@ChanningTretum He wasn't supposed to be getting this much playing time. He's not ready yet. We drafted him because he was meant to be behind Keenan, Mike, and Josh, but our team doesn't know how to sya on the field. Even QJ got hurt this past week 😢
@@Ali-wi8bxI think both of you are right. He was drafted for upside and to sit behind Mike and Keenan yes, but I think this was also an excuse for them to draft “their type”. TT always liked big basketball player receivers, and naturally he went for that one in this draft instead. They drafted what they wanted and not what they needed
Rashee is pretty good. He’s very good against zone. He’s top 5 in rookie Wr tds with 4-5. His issues are against man coverage. He was a contested ball, downfield guy in college but I don’t know why the chiefs don’t use him this way. The chiefs finally unleashed Rice on Sunday with a lot of targets and look what happened. 8 of 10 receptions for 107 yards. They should also be targeting him downfield and unleash his vertical ability as well. He went vertical and had a sweet toe tap catch near the sideline. Rice will be very good in the future and will be definitely be an elite #2 WR. Maybe true #1 can be in the cards idk. -Chiefs Fan 💪🏾
@@kev792 - Veach has been a top notch GM. He has done an excellent job building their defense. Telasco doesn’t have a good record in the draft nor in hiring coaches
Thing with q is he seems to me like a real hard worker and a dude that's going to take the time to develop his craft athletically and physically there's nothing holding them back other than maybe his top end speed. But if he learns from Keenan and works at his craft the way I think he will, I'm not worried. Well I am worried, like really worried.. but I still have hope.
I think he should not have been a first round pick. His lack of production started in the pre-season. This is what happens when you don't play your starters in pre-season. No chemistry developed between Herbert and Johnston and that showed in the first six games of the season when Johnston had only six receptions.
Some players make it to the nfl and are happy. Some players have the goal of becoming a first round draft pick. But they may not have desire to be great in the nfl because their dreams were already accomplished. That’s him I think.
I just got NFL+ for christmas and as a chargers fan i have been reviewing Quentin Johnstons play. To me it seems like he has a few problems. 1. He shows a lack of ability to create separation. He isn’t physical, and he is frequently unable to win at the line and the top of his route, and he can’t win at the catch point either 2. Effort. He shows below average effort compared to his fellow draftees, Flowers and Addison. Just watching him run simple drag routes on the heels of the D-Line is frustrating because either he turns his head to late and misses the ball, or he catches it and lets himself get tackled, rarely fighting or shimmeying for another yard. This game against the Ravens he looked better, grabbing a couple yards after the catch, but i digress. Comparing him to Zay Flowers, you see Flowers fight for more yards and create lanes to run through. Johnston seems to be content with a few yards and then going down. He gives up. 3. Scheming. The chargers don’t know how to use Johnston. He is rarely in the quarterback’s progressions. In the recent game Vs the broncos, Stick looked to his side once in the fourth quarter. Overall, frustrating. Next year will be his make or break year. He has an off-season to pull it together, and i hope he does.
That's the problem is the chargers, not enough WR weapons. Having Herbert forced throws. The Oline has been bad since Corey lindsey has been out. Plus, the Defense.
Chargers thought he was going be a 50/50 jump man like williams... williams sacrifices his body for any gain and thats what chargers thought qj was going be
but it's weird cause he never did that stuff in college. that was never what he was good at. glad that Staley and Tom are gone but kellen moore is def more to blame for the QJ issue since he is the OC
I’m no expert but I didn’t understand the liking of QJ coming out. His tape didn’t impressive me at all. NFL GMs just always overthink everything. Addison was a stud his whole college career and never showed he wasn’t, doesn’t make sense why GMs just thought QJ was a better prospect
Johnston big problem is his lack of physicality...I am sure he now realizes he needs to add some muscle and learn how to fight for the ball. Mike Williams is same height but has 15lbs of big boy muscle on Johnston and wins those matchups because of his strength leverage. He can learn a lot from Mike...if hes back
Yeah, Jackson, his college tape showed he wasn’t WR1. Dude was the same kind of player in college. Inconsistent hands, inconsistent athleticism, inconsistent route running, crazy mental errors. The Chargers got the dude they drafted.
2½ minutes before you got into anything. That looping the snap up to the point where Justin Herbert throws the ball over and over again for the first minute, absolutely unbearable. You should try writing a script, because you just ramble and ramble
Puka legit plays like a seasoned vet. He uses his body to lean into soft spots. I think he's the most impressive rookie wr to me because he doesn't get open with just athleticism alone.
Banger video just a bit of a correction. It was Roquan #0 Smith in pass coverage on that little crossing route across the middle not Patrick#6🦈Queen. Great content bro👍🏻👿👿👿👿👿👿
Yea..that was a bad play overall. No chance him and Allen are suppose to end up in the same spot...4 defenders within a few yards..this offense has a bunch of issues...
He’s going to be WR8 overall next year and we’ll laugh about how we dogged this kid for having an average rookie season w a shipwreck of a coaching staff.
I wanted us to take TE Mayer. Yes, wasn't totally worthy of a 1st rounder, but would've been acceptable because he would have been functional and useful for us in blocking and catching. And because we wouldn't have any TE next year. If we drafted him, I'd still take a TE next year if Bowers or a better one was available still. A TE is a QB's best friend and if he can block helps everyone else on offense.
So you’re bashing a guy whose team has a terrible OC known particularly for his time in Dallas for not knowing how to properly use ANYBODY? Flowers and Addison were the most productive you say? That tends to happen when your team doesn’t have room in the 1-2 spots. Everyone always wants their draft pick to be the next big thing instead of giving them time to grow.. when your offense consists of just Jettas, or just Lamar that’s going to leave more room for reps and playing time as opposed to being on an offense with Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Ekeler and Herbert or DK, K9 and Lockett..
I'm a Raven's fan and watched the breakdowns on all the WRs. People were really split between all four guys. Johnston supposedly had the highest ceiling. If that's the case, if I was a Charger's fan, I'd be thinking project/develop and hope he has the Mike Williams trajectory who also had a bad rookie season.
Go watch Davante Adams rookie highlights and then tell me that is a fair comparison. Davante's numbers weren't stellar but he had some very nice plays and flashes of greatness his rookie year. Not one single great play from QJ this year after 11 games. We aren't talking about mistakes because they happen to rookies. Not one single wow moment from QJ. At this point I am hoping he can at least become an average NFL wide receiver.
Stupid draft choice. Guy had a reputation in college as having hands of stone...why would the Chargers think that going to the NFL would improve his ability to learn how to catch.
He’s had a lot of opportunities, he’s gotten wide open and just dropped the ball. Sure he’s drawn some flags but those should have also been catches he’s dropped. If you can’t get yourself open then at least make the catches that hit your hands. Sucks to see flowers and Addison having good years knowing the chargers thought this dude was better
not sure what you mean by a lot of opportunities. He has played in every game this season. But in his first six games he caught six passes. Chargers fucked up again on draft day
Here’s an obvious take: Brandon Staley is dunzo in LA. A little less obvious of a prediction: The Chargers will get their next head coach from the exact same source they snagged Staley from: the LA Rams current DC - Raheem Morris.
The play on Patrick Queen had very little to do with Johnston or his route running. Queen was in zone and fixated on Herbert’s eyes. Johnston could have made the nastiest cut in history and it wouldn’t have mattered because Queen wasn’t looking at him.
I was never sold on him, nor were most fans. How tf can fans look at college highlights and see who looks better but the GM paid millions doesn't. Telesco should be fired for this pick alone.
To be honest I have no idea what you saw of him in college, he’s not built for this. When you draft WR you ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS draft for route running and hands over size and athleticism/ potential.
He was being held on the play he got hurt and clear as day and most of the season he had some of the best separationin the league and I see believe he it was double the league average but the chargers are not using him well. Don't get me wrong he's had some catches he should of had but he's made some good ones too. Not giving up on this guy! ⚡️
separation is one thing actually making the catch and knowing how to separate to a soft spot is another. Keenan is the master of seperating at the right moment where it makes qbs easy to throw to him. QJ needs to develop but it doesn't help that he's not making catches he should be catching. I was a huge QJ supporter but he's got to get it together or sit a bit and learn
I’m u die hard chargers fan y tf are you lying sir he has been absolutely horrible all season defense realy puts there worst corner on him every game cuz they know he’s a bust his route running is atrocious he getts bullied every damn play especially if he has to do any sorts of blocking he has not a lick of confidence because he’s getting exposed this not tcu every one in this league is good and he thrives on being the big fish in a little pond syndrome
Even as a charger fan myself that wants him to play well thats just not true. By most metrics he's the worst seperating WR in the league atm. He would have been credited with even more drops but got dpi called instead. He hopefully turns it around, but he'll have alot of studying & hard work to turn it around.
after watching a whole season, this guy is slow and clumsy. he's got stone hands and favors trapping balls with his body. his size bailed and lack of competition bailed him out in college. not so the NFL.
i started watching him more after these last couple of weeks and notice that their offense is just centered around Keenan Allen and dump offs to Eckler. So he does get his chances but its so limited , for him to actually go off. I think chargers coach needs a change as well. They cant win shoot outs and are losing even when there defense plays good. I think everyone is just remembering theee drop against the packers he had and writing him off. I do think he has below average hands but everyone knew that , but putting him in tight sets are not going to work if he has great athleticism. There other players who are good and are just not used often in an offense such as alec pierce and others
The Chargers have no choice. Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler are the only two receivers on the team that can make plays consistently. The rest of the receivers are terrible including Johnston. We are not even talking contested catches. Wide open and Quentin Johnston flat out drops the balls including a game winner. If a defender is going for the ball QJ simply gets pushed out of the way every time. Why??? It is so upsetting!
as a chargers fan im completely out on johnston. He probably won't ever get better I really hope we get another receiver in the draft hes jalen reagor and nkeal henry bust territory
N'Keal Harry had some serious attitude issues where he would not communicate with his coaches. It was the reason why his career turned out so badly. Unless Johnston is having similar communication problems he should improve with the help of coaching. No reason to give up on him at this point. Maybe after a few years if he isn't showing improvement with the help from coaching then it is time to pull the plug.
Allen has pissed down his leg more than once in the last month as well, so sure pick on QJ but there is enough blame to go around on this underachieving squad
??? Allen been on fire this year. He has 1100 yrds while QJ has like 190... I dont expect major yards from QJ but to say Allen been mid especially this month is weird. Dude has like 3x 100+ yard games the pass 3 games, and one was 175, almost as much as QJ season.... 😅
