tbh I rarely see clickbait on youtube ever, I spend 90% of my time on the subcribed page and the other 10% in the home page I stay near the top where all the content I want to watch is. The more you scroll away from clickbait the less you see it.

My anger towards RU-vidRED has never and will never be about the idea of subscriptions replacing ads. There are 2 major issue I take with RU-vidRED: 1. It was marketed as a pathetic attempt to compete with Netflix and others like it for the production of big budget content. 2. Initial region locking to the US, and a non-transparent method of selecting new regions to expand service to. 1. Sorry MatPat, but I dont want to watch a show like Game Lab (or Scare Pewdiepie, Prank Academy, etc). Its doesnt matter if its good or not because its not the type of content I personally am interested in watching. That doesn't mean its a bad show by any means, it just not the type of content I look to you for. If you want to make that type of content because you enjoy making it and have the capacity to do so go ahead Im happy for you, but dont expect me to watch it because its not what I want to watch. I subscribed to this channel and Game Theory for Theory Crafting content in this particular low-mid budget format. I dont want to watch "TV-quality" content on RU-vid, I want to watch RU-vidrs and the videos they make and engage in a the unique creator-user interaction that the internet allows that the TV show format simple cannot do. I cant relate to people in big budget content, but I can definitely relate to RU-vidrs that record the voice-overs for their youtube videos in their closet because thats what they can afford with their budget. That is why I love things like Patreon, because it supports those types of content creators that made RU-vid what it is and allows them to have some financial stability so that they can keep being the awesome creative people that they are. If RU-vid didnt market RU-vidRED as its response to Netflix like they did then I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it. To be clear Im not opposed to RU-vidrs making higher quality content, but Im not going to RU-vid to look for that type of Content. If RU-vidrs want to make that type of TV style content, go talk to companies like NetFlix like Bo Burnham and Miranda Sings have done. Some examples of RU-vidrs that are doing higher quality content without sacrificing the style that they are known for or using RU-vidRED grants are JonTron, Corridor, and Schmoyoho. 2. Unlike Netflix which restricts the content you can see in your particular country based on their legal ability to distribute that content in your country, RU-vidRED just simply wasnt available outside the US for nearly a year after its launch. While Netflix also did this when they started, they were a brand new company with no existing infrastructure to deploy their services on. RU-vid on the other hand has one of the biggest content distribution networks in the world, so they really had no excuse to not deploy RU-vidRED world wide within the first few months of its US release. To make it all worse, when they finally did start expanding to other countries they did so in a very non-transparent manner. There was no timeline given as to when people in other nations could expect RU-vidRED to be deployed in their nation, and no method was outlined by RU-vid as to how they would decide where to expand the service to next. Instead of asking their users if they would pay for RU-vidRED if it was available in their country, RU-vid seems to have decided to expand to nations that have the largest user base. This is a stupid way of measuring potential for the service in other nations, because they didnt seem to have factored in user engagement per country but rather just total number of users per country, which means smaller nations that have high user engagement (and therefore would mostly likely be willing to help support the channels they engage with financially via RU-vidRED) get ignore by RU-vid, forcing those highly engaged users to resort to with suffering through ads or using an adblocker even though they know it will mean they RU-vidrs they support will likely get less money. It also completely flys in the face with a long standing North American tradition between Canada and the US, where if one nation has a new up and coming company or service the first nation they expand to is their immediate neighbor. Netflix did this by expanding to Canada, and so have countless other companies over the years. RU-vidRED broke this unwritten rule, with RU-vid deciding that Brazil and Australia should get RU-vidRED before Canada does. This may seem petty (and maybe it is a bit) but as a Canadian I take offense at being ignored like that by RU-vid, and it really puts me off getting RU-vidRED if it ever does expand to Canada (Google Canadians paying for American HBO Go if you want to see how far Canadians will go in this regard). RU-vid has shown similar degrees of disrespect to other nations in the past (Ex: excluding Asian RU-vidrs from RU-vid Rewind until there was enough public outcry about it), so it really seems like RU-vid doesnt care about anyone but the US even though a significant portion of their userbase is from outside the US now. Until RU-vid explicitly addresses and resolves these 2 concerns I have about RU-vidRED, it will continue to be a smear on their reputation in my opinion, and I will not be getting RU-vidRED if it ever does come to Canada. I'll stick to an ad-blocker and Pateron until RU-vid's attitude towards content creators and region locking(for lack of a better term) dramatically changes.

in the section about how news companies are really ad companies, an actual ad popped up on my video and I was getting very confused why this 1 example ad actually had a brand name and wasn't going away, then after way too long I finally realizes it was a real ad lol

RU-vid is sorta broken in the way that most money is generated by Vloggers. Animators are now getting money cut, and some channels known for inappropriate content are being demonitized. But the BIG issue here is that Vloggers are making money but are also making bad reputations. Logan Paul was, and still is, hated globally for his actions in Japan, but he still gets money due to many views and this in turn gets RU-vid more money because the ads are being played more. It sounds all good until more competitors come and make a better reputation for themselves. This reputation can be made better by paying animators or more dedicated work channels more than Vloggers. It may sound kinda biased coming off me but I don't make money anyway and I don't really care. However, because RU-vid is paying more to Vloggers, I thought I could give my view on why it could damage RU-vid. The new payment system by RU-vid is paying less to those who do more. It also favours one very controversial category, that being Vloggers. Since they are getting paid more, other channels have had to resort to Patrion in order to make enough money. If a competitor came and paid more to more dedicated channels, those channels on RU-vid might jump ship. If popular channels start to do that, more channels will follow. In turn, this would leave RU-vid with Vloggers and that's it. It would ruin RU-vid BIG TIME. Because it would only have Vloggers, no one would go on. Vloggers would also start on the competitors website and would become a new RU-vid, only this one would've seen the effects of treating Vloggers better than more dedicated channels. Channels that are more costly need more money, Vlogging is cheap. However, don't get your hopes up, or down if you hate RU-vid's new rules. This does seem like a far fetched Theory, but may happen, only in smaller quantities. RU-vid DOMIMATE the online video market. They are VERY widely known. But if a competitor starts trending, it could do some serious damage, now more than ever! But hey, that's just a theory, a... hmmm... Marketing Theory...? Ah well, I tried.

Essentially, you have made a good point. I just mainly stick to parts of the youtube world that don't really clickbate and such. Hence why I subscribed to FT, GT, and Food Theory. Now a lot of what I've been hearing makes much more sense.

The Film Theorists Hey MatPat, I have a question for you, and I hope you see this. (I'm not holding much hope, but still thought I'd try) So I'm an aspiring film director. I love both watching and making entertaining things, hence why I watch your stuff. My question is: do you think there is a way to save the film industry? Meaning, I enjoy going to a movie theater, getting my popcorn and massive soda, and sitting down to watch an epic story told on a big screen. I love it, movie-going was like my whole childhood. But, I've noticed as of this year (again, 2016 being the sucky year it is) that there were even more bad movies than usual. And, in seeing this episode, I realized this is exactly why. The movie industry isn't about telling good stories, its about advertising. So my question to you is do you think there is a way to save the film industry and keep that amazing experience I had as a kid, or is it a doomed field that I should stop wasting my time and money trying to get into and is going to be swallowed up by Netflix soon (which I realize has a way better system for fostering stories than any other platform, hence why I seem to like almost all their original stuff on there). Would love to know your thoughts on this. Sincerely, A long time fan.
