The resolution of the sensor is 3280x2464 so the output file is downscaled to half of that! It's a shame there's no way you can get the raw capture from the device which would give you lots more to work with in post processing.

Thank you for your time and effort - very helpful in my self education as I seem to be in a similar thought process as you when you first started down this path. I probably am looking at getting something like this, but geez there are a lot of strong opinions out there. Some swear only by the Magnasonic etc. and wouldn’t touch your machine. However, the way you framed things and your hands-on experience does sway my thought process -its rational and based on hours of work with the machine. For me, 1080p resolution would be important … but maybe I am paying too much attention to this (I have a projector with a large screen, so 1080p is nice). Now, I am starting to think that the “post” conversion process is probably more important than the actual “raw” footage created with the digitizer. Any thoughts? I have liked and subscribed and will be looking at some more of your videos.

Many thanks for the fantastic tutorial. One thing you didn't touch upon was the sound. Does the device capture the sound as well? Some of my old 8mm do have sound.

Thanks for the heads-up. 20 Frames per Second and the erratic color correction with no way to turn it off are def deal-breakers.

Thank you for your review. You are the first one who is not trashing the concept of these devices in general. The contrast looks to be very high though, is this a RU-vid thing or is that the raw output? Are contrast and white-balancing adjustable in any way in the menu? Are there different file format options (like JPG)?

There are very few setting inside the machines but you can adjust with software after the fact is what I had to do in some cases.

I just bought a Kodak Reels...I noticed how the automatic white balance changes colors when it's not supposed to... Like the white balance goes from white to yellowish and back again in the same scene? Did you ever figure out a way to correct this?The inconsistency likely will have me returning it.

I got this Kodak reels film scanner and I love it. The only problem is that take up real Will sometimes stop and the film will go all over the floor but otherwise it’s great. my solution for the film going on the floor is I just put a box under it and if I forget to check on it, the box will catch the film and I can rewind it on the real and some of my rolls of film, are water damaged from a basement flood and I do not know if any companies who scan film will do water, damaged 8 mm film rolls the only film that got damaged are the ones that were on the small rolls I had 9 inch reels of film in metal tins and they didn’t get damaged luckily

Thank you for all the information. How hard is it to transfer the files from an SD card to a DVD? Also can you put more than one 50' reel onto an SD card?
@MiddleSiggyHomestead
@MiddleSiggyHomestead 5 месяцев назад
There are ways to do that, DVD is a MPG2 format and is not a great quality codec. But there is software you can purchase to make dvd’s and they willl convert the videos and burn them for you

Thank for the review. Does the device provide RCA or S-Video/audio outputs. For preservation and restoration purposes, I would like to capture the film to to a higher codec, like ProRes 4:2:2, than MP4 with an external capture device.
@patrickcardon1643
@patrickcardon1643 Год назад
Nope, sorry, just got mine after watching a lot of YT videos on the Wolverine, Kodak and similar machines. All those machines only capture to SD card, and some have a USB port (but that's only to copy the files on the SD card to the computer, if you have an SD card reader just pop the card in there). You cannot change the codec or file container unfortunately. All you can do is zoom in and out (but I fear it is digital), move the frame around and change the default exposure, sharpness and tint. But you might be better off doing some of that in software. Considering the price point one cannot expect features of a pro model. If you got a heap of reels it's probably cheaper than sending it out for scanning. I hope someone will end up modifying the software of the unit to allow raw capturing

There is not, because this is taking a snap shot of every frame, and putting it together, so it does not have the ability to read the audio... see my other video on all the ways to convert, because I had the need to get sound, and you will see how I did that

Were you able to compare a Wolverine capture & Kodak capture of the same film ? Any significant quality difference?
@MiddleSiggyHomestead
@MiddleSiggyHomestead Год назад
As long as you get the pro version of the Wolverine it captures at the same resolution. I found it had some of the same color issues. To the only difference I could tell was the internal drive and the film guides. Otherwise I felt they were just about the same. The standard version of the Wolverine I was not impressed by. And it captured at 720p

A tip from some other user, don't push the take up reel completely in ... to avoid friction with the plastic of the arm. Also read of one giu on a forum that just had the film drop into a box and didn't use the take up reel as it got stuck regularly. A third one opened the arm to change the course of the belt. If your unit works though, don't touch it ;)

Ended up disconnecting the takeup reel motor ... too much noise and rumbling. When I have some time I'll see if I can fix that. Now trying to fix a problem of sharpness, the lens doesn't seem to have been set right. After that need to see about the automatic adjustments which push the colors too much
@patrickcardon1643
@patrickcardon1643 Год назад
For your information ... the lens was not adjusted correctly and the whole right side was blurry ... I ended up opening up the unit, taking inside out to be able to pop off the lens cover, mount it all back in after removing carefully the glueblob on the lens. The unit now has the lens in the open and I can adjust the focus. Pity you cannot use the USB cable to have a live image out on this unit.

I just received the Kodak Reels Digitizer from Amazon. Luckily Amazon had a $100 discount coupon bringing the cost to About $300 which I thought was very reasonable. Fortunately I also found your channel. Watching you made setup and use of this device a breeze. I just digitized one 2 min 40 sec movie as a test - It was Super 8 from my daughters first Christmas in 1969. I didn't change any settings out of the box. When I watched the playback on the Kodak 5" screen the results looked pretty good but when watched on my 65" 4k TV I could see some flaws. This was expected but I think some can be fixed. On flaw was the picture seemed overly bright, which can be adjusted in the settings . Another was there seemed to be some "snow" in the picture and I am hoping that can be cleaned up by reducing the sharpness. Overall this is an amazing machine which will allow me to digitize my box of unused movies from both my and my children's childhoods. I thank you for your channel and all the input you give. After this I guess its VHS to digital next.

Just got the machine and so far, It looks easy but I am disapointed that there is no settings to adjust the focus. When I project the movie on a screen with a film projector, looks pretty good but when I use the digitizer, it is very much out of focus. I am the right setting for super-8 so I know it is not the film. Any suggestions to help me with better focusing? Thanks

To get the sound off the film, for me I had to use the Kodak movie projector. The one from the 1970’s not the reel to reel you buy on Amazon. For me my projector has an audio jack in the back and I feed the audio into the camera I am filming the screen with as I show in the video. Hope that helps. Look in the description for the projector names on eBay

It is a digital picture of every frame. So if the picture was clean so should your capture. But make sure the film is in the track correctly otherwise I guarantee it will end up fuzzy.

With 20fps footage, what is the best frame rate for your editing timeline? I can't seem to find a consensus online. Some insist on 24p, others 60p
@MiddleSiggyHomestead

24 is the normal original rate but most of the upscalers will deinterlace and set it to 60 as a way to smooth the video.

They all seem to come from the same factory, and with all brands it also seems to be hit and miss on the state of the unit you'll get. Some people have no issues and some are forced to send it back. I own one of these. Yes they're cheap-ish, but cheap in quality too. It boasts 1080p, but that's still no good because of all of the noise in the image due to the bad sensor and software. Display the mp4 on a laptop size screen and it looks really shit. Honestly don't even bother. Just pay for a 2.7k or 4k scan.

@@teddlear970 Now that I have processed a few reels, I don't think the Kodak is for me. I was surprised to see that the two 7-inch reels I converted went from beginning to end without intervention. I must have made good splices. :-) The slowness did not bother me because I am not doing this professionally and I can do other stuff in my studio (lots of audio digitizing) while I let the Kodak chug away. However, the clincher for me is the image. The output is a little too noisy for me. This is more than grainy film. I just can't live with it. So, I have decided to return the Kodak and take my film into a local service. The service uses Moviestuff equipment. I don't have that much film to convert, and it is not an ongoing hobby with more reels to come, so the cost is not prohibitive. Thanks for your insight here and other RU-vid posts--very helpful. Likewise, @MiddleSiggyHomestead, thank you. I believe you pointed out that it is a judgement call about quality of output. I do like learning, and wow have I learned a lot about this lately. THANKS!
