@@IndieFilmArmy I’m actually interested in developing video games so I took a class to see which part of the game making process I would want to be a part of. I have listen to the greats and your presentation on writing a treatment was the most guided and consisted. Thanks for posting. I Have written my logline, and I will listen to your video first until I commit. Should list the Genre under the logline or after. in addition, should we call our title a working title on the written treatment. Again thank you for your professional assistance. As a courtesy tell us something about you and some of your work.
@IndieFilmArmy
@IndieFilmArmy 4 года назад
Hey Ida! Thank you so much for your kind words!! You can place your genre on the line before your logline. Working Title just implies that it's subject to change in the future, yup it's your working title in the treatment. Just because the film treatment is one of the very first things we do before writing the screenplay, it's hard to definitively say that your title won't change by the time you reach the final act of your screenplay or even your second rewrite. Thanks a ton, Ida, I really appreciate you!Oh, some of my work! You can check out my feature-length mini-series on Amazon Prime now if you'd like. Link Here: amzn.to/37kjQNP

Thanks so much for watching guys! For the Index Card Exercise, I made an error😬, this is basically an inspired version of what Blake Synder has in his book! According to his book, Blake wants writers to use 40 index cards to write 1 scene per index card. When I tried to do this Index Card Exercise Blake's way, I just ended up writing all 3 acts down in one Index card front and back. I couldn't do it Blake's way! I found this method to be a bit more challenging and efficient. Either way whatever works for you. 😌 Was this helpful at all? Anything I left out or anything you'd like to add?

I have a question ...like I have a vague idea in mind...like story not clear ..but I know the start the climax and the good ending ... So where to start . First the treatment , as you told ,...then go for screenplay ..... I was seeing people saying go on writing the story ..at the end. Write the synopsis ..... What about marketing based synopsis .. Does it different then treatment synopsis

Hey Asit! That is a great question! I must make a video about going from idea to full fledged story but I'd jot down everything that excites me about my story. Then utilizing the framework in my "Save The Cat | Structure" video work on the beatsheet then go back to the film treatment! Hope this helps!

Hi! great video! It really helps a lot. One simple question here. Say I'm writing a Raymond Chandler type detective story, the crime boss doesn't show until the middle of act 2. How do I write his character break down, like should I avoid any spoilers?
@IndieFilmArmy
@IndieFilmArmy 4 года назад
Hey Eric!!! So glad you enjoyed it!Yes, I'd say if you can help it you don't have to divulge that he's the antagonist in the character description. Gear the descriptions so that the reader kinda has a sneak peak into who these people are and if you can utilize it to entice the reader even better!

What do you think of writing really long treatments, say 60-90 pages or more? McKee says that one benefit of doing this is that we get to extract a shorter script out of a much longer work. This is the old studio way of doing things. It's supposed to make writing the screenplay itself a much quicker process, with a much cleaner first draft.

This is certainly a different approach but I forgot where it mentions this process in his book "Story." But I'd say that you should certainly do what works for you! But this wouldn't be an approach I would use though. There is a step that I am missing before the writing of the treatment in this video and that is to write the story beats down right before you begin the treatment as it helps guide your hand just a bit more so that you can more easily translate the treatment into the film once your ready to begin writing your movie.

@@IndieFilmArmy I agree with both of your methods in part, and he also mentions that this is just one of many methods. For me, I don't really outline the entire plot, only the general skeleton using Aristotle's terms from poetics (harmatia, anagnorisis and peripetia), but then again I just write really short plays and short films. I does require more rewrites, but rewriting a 10 page play doesn't really take long anyway, so 5-8 drafts are normal for me. Just to give the McKee quote: "The forty to sixty scenes of a typical screenplay, treated to a moment by moment description of all action, underlaid with a full subtext of the conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings of all characters, will produce sixty, eight, ninety, or more double-spaced pages. In the studio system from the 1930s to the 1950s when producers ordered treatments from writers, they were often two hundred to three hundred pages long. The strategy of studio writers was to extract the screenplay from a much larger work so nothing would be overlooked or unthought. " McKee, Robert. Story (p. 415). Chapter 19: A writer's method. HarperCollins e-books. Kindle Edition. He does also add that we don't need to return to the vastness of the 200-300 pages, but that there is still utility of 60-90 pages, as it makes writing the actual screenplay a much quicker process.

Thank you for all this great input. As an author, I never realized that writing a script vs a novel is like night and day! As a wannabe screenwriter, my goal is to first learn all I can about screenwriting, then craft a movie out of a book I wrote which won a statewide contest several yrs. ago. In view of the Corona virus and being on lockdown as a senior citizen, I figure if nothing else, keeping my brain challenged just might avoid getting dementia. :)

I discovered your channel recently, and I like it instantly, it was very informative. I have this question: How to write a treatment and synopsis when the present story overlaps with the backstory and merges almost at the end, as told in the script? Like ACT 2, ACT 1, ACT 2, ACT1 then ACT 3 + EPILOGUE.

Well it depends on your own techniques. I write my treatment AFTER the Exposé. Why? Because I write the exposé from my story ideas. The treatment is actually just the "menue" which you present and which will need to be almost flawless as your entrance and your own marketing. But overall I totally agree with you and your points. Very simple actually, but really tough to write. Im currently workin on a Mafia/Gangster Thriller called "The Last Moonshine", in which a reckless tax investogator becomes a corrupt official who helps smuggling alcohol during the prohibition in Chigago during the late 1920s. Euphorically, he squandered his shares in the red light district, losing his wife, friends and job and gets tangled up in deals with "Lucky Luciano" and accumulates big debts at the Cosa Nostra. His only way out is to help a young widdow to investigate retrievibg the lost payment of her deceased husbands insurance, of which she is waiting ever since her husband died in a car crash. But the Mafia already knew and everything leads to a showdown in which no character is the same as before. Friends are foes, his Mobster friends are after him, while this beatiful widdow carries a big secret which causes everyone to become overwhelmingly lost in the mess of the Mafia and its business. Yes there is Sex, yes theres blood, yes there is a good but unexpected ending. I first wrote my idea. Then i started to pick scenes which are very specific and I wrote the screenplay right away for some scenes which are very present in my mind and MUST be the way I see them in order to have this "feeling" to construct everything around. In the next step I do my research and start creating the characters to form the lifes and background of everyone. Therafter I write the Exposé. 20-30 pages very detailed with character details, scenery and setting and key dialoges. The key leading scenes of plot points 1 and 2 are fully written out and may explain more as there will be in the actual script. And NOW I would have a clear picture of what I see, what I want someone else to see, and have run this "plausibility test" during the process already. For the treatment I can easily pick the best parts of it and write it a bit more compact and now know where the twist is and which would be the most interesting but yet useful info I can present in this "menue". Once the treatment is finished, you can think of your selling line- Or what of your story would one read in the infobox on netflix or the back cover. To not tell too much but wake curiousity. I know, some work so much more different- But I guess everyone needs to know what works best. Cheers!

Hey Coala your story sounds Dope. I'm actually gonna be creating an update video soon that makes the film treatment writing process a bit easier because I do agree that there is a step missing to write it easier that's why I'll create that update video
