We filmed a cinema commercial for a lens manufacturer in autumn 2023. With a small helicopter and a car rig we tried to film the most spectacular gliding scenes.

A very video that highlights the hours spent for just a few minutes of footage. Too bad the video couldn't have taken place in Saint Crépin. But I'm glad you enjoyed Barcelonnette and the Ubaye 😃

A little geolocation from Mr. AV. Home point: Barcelonnette - Saint-Pons Airfield, Icao: LFMR. 1:34 Looks like the Sierra Lima is following the ridges of L'Aupillon 2916m. These “black” ravines are the Ravin de la Grande Combe gorge. And they are black because they are “Terres Noires” (black marls with brown patina: Oxfordian to Upper Bajocian). 7:39 Towing to the four-tower peak of Grande Séolane 2909m. On this slab of limestone lies a layer of sandstone with a dark patina, well dated to the Lutetian (Middle Eocene) by its large nummulites (sometimes very abundant), which finally support black flysch. 8:37 The peak of Le Péguiéou 2479m entangled with ski lifts. 10:23 Excellent shots from the northwest to the Pra Loup ski resort. On the horizon in the center is the sharp peak of Le Pain de Sucre / la Méa 2560m. 11:28 Oh... I recognize this guy at the controls of the helicopter! Mr. Matthieu De Quillacq.

Yes, it was a little bit sad touching the stones. I don´t know exactly why this happened because I released the break exactly to avoid this. Must be slightly soft ground and a small step from the runway. At the end these are only some scratches...

@@SteFly Oh man, sometimes life just gives you stones. Are you going to keep the scratches until the next winter checkup to remember Barcelonnette on your preflight checks, or are you going to fix it as soon as possible? ^^ Iconic that stuff like this happens at the start of a season haha

Beautiful. I really need to learn mountain gliding. Got my PPL in New York where there are mostly only thermals, but live in Utah at the moment and see the gliders on the ridges all the time. Super jealous

Hi Stefan, seit fast 20 jahren interessiere ich mich für die Fliegerei, bis auf Modellflug, den Gleitschirmschein und einige Mitflüge in Helis und kleineren Privatmaschinen hab ich den "richtigen Einstieg" aber nie richtig geschafft..... und heute war es dann so weit, die Segelflugazsbildung hat mit knapp über 30 endlich gestartet.... danke für deine Videos, mal schaun wies bei mir wird :-)

Flying between Praloup and the clouds, that's something we usually don"t do 😉 Except for that one time I landed there, I have good memories of Barcelonette. Usually the place where you first hit 3000m (or not).

A Barcelonette j'y étais le 26 et 27 aout 2023, j'ai visité l'aérodrome de vol à voile et Helisport (chez Matthieu ), une belle région, mais la météo n'était pas favorable. Tchüss Stefan ;-)

Late October is already late for flying in the French alps. Until mid of September the weather conditions are usually good.

What precautions do you take to avoid flying into vortices generated by the helicopter?

This ULM helicopter doesn´t produce severe vortices which flips the glider or so. Of course we took care of it and usually the helicopter flew next to me, never before me. At one time I flew below the helicopter for a special shot and I didn´t notice anything. But the helicopter pilot also said to me, that I should not do this with a heavier helicopter.

Haha, quite an incredible guy, he was my paragliding instructor. He was building his first helicopter in the paragliding school at that time. Thanks for sharing. Low passes over that terrain 🤩
