In Britain we have a style of entertainment (and sociopolitical movement that you should look up) called Kitchen Sink Realism , which mostly consists of stories about working class people and their struggles in their daily lives. This is an Alien-invasion, kitchen sink horror and a work of art.

This movie had such an effect on me. I was in tears by the end. As an American, I could barely understand them at times in the beginning and took them to be just a bunch of criminals. But by the end, I was crying my eyes out. By the end, I understood every word they said, and saw them for what they were, what they always were, incredibly brave children. I had forgotten I came from neighborhoods just like this. I forgot how you had to be brave every day. I saw them in the beginner as the world saw them, and by the end, I saw myself. That's how you make a movie, man!

this is one of my favorite movies ever!! the combination of the classic creature-feature/alien invasion genre with the perspective of a marginalized group, and the fantastic acting by the entire cast, just makes this movie so unique and entertaining. it also has several textbook uses of set up and payoff that i didn’t catch on the first watch but did on the rewatch that makes me come back to this movie over and over. also the fact that john boyega and jodie whitaker both went on to star in major sci-fi franchises after this speaks to how this movie really let them show off their acting chops. not to mention how the design of the aliens blends with the night time setting, and so much of this movie is set in the dark (or obscured vision in the smoky hall scene) and yet you can always see the important action. it’s very deliberate with the use of color and lighting. i could rave about this movie forever i love it so much

I took my niece to see it when it was released here in NYC. She was a teen and we both loved it. I wasn't the only adult with a teen. I loved this movie and what I didn't expect was when Moses went into that deep monologue on how they want to kill them off. I suspected the family life, but not his awareness of what's happening to their community. I had my mom watch it in 2020 during lock down and she enjoyed it, something about teens handling situations like these that are both hysterical and entertaining. Direction, lighting, camera, music & the actors, wonderful!

I love this movie so much. The aliens were men in suits but they were tweaked in post production so they were completely black, with no details other than the glowing teeth. Such an awesone design. The music is by legendary London-based, Grammy winning duo, Basement Jaxx. They're amazing and their music is perfect in this. This guy, Joe Cornish, directed another fun, but totally underrated film called The Kid Who Would Be King.

@@JamesVSCinema So Joe Cornish came up around the same time as Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg/Nick Frost; they had their Sitcom "Spaced" which riffed on loads of movies/video games etc. Joe Cornish had a show with a comedian called Adam Buxton, called The Adam & Joe Show. Really low budget stuff where they would do reviews, recreate the latest movies with stuffed animals etc. They were doing crazy stuff with Star Wars action figures before Robot Chicken. Bro your reaction to this is perfect. My teacher showed me this a few years back in film class in high school and it’s so fun to watch. Hearing you mention the crane work and rack focus and stuff is really refreshing compared to a lot of other reactors on RU-vid. You really know what you talk about and notice the beautiful little things. Anyway the aliens are mostly puppets made out of a pure black material, which is why they chose to make the teeth glow so you could actually see them. Fantastic movie and amazing reaction, James. Keep up the great work

Just a heads up : movies with a non white male lead are rarely going to be found in requests for any of the RU-vid reaction channels. Unless it's a comic book film. That's just a fact. This is why attack the Block didn't show upon anyone's request list. Otherwise a genre cult classic like this would be everywhere on reaction channels. Yet despite being about ten years old you may be the first to have an extended reaction of it. Congrats. The usual suspects will take shots at me for writing this but what else would they do. So it's good you step outside the suggestion box from time to time to pick gems that don't get overlooked. Keep up the good work.

(Adam of "Adam and Joe" plays the reporter in Hot Fuzz) I think it is highly likely that Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright knew each other. This is such a great reaction to a movie I loved growing up in London! You're right about the social message and it's actually a pretty deep one. That's one thing I love about some movies and tv shows out of the UK, they don't hit you over the head with the preachy social or political messages. It's subtle enough for you to see it from your own perspective and come to your own conclusion rather than being told directly what you should be thinking if that makes sense. It's the difference between being told and being shown that I think is done in a really cool way here. A channel called Kay and Skittles made a video explaining the much deeper social message of this movie and he's an American who's been living in the UK for years so his perspective is very insightful.

I love movies like this. Low budget but that doesn't stop them from making something good. It reminds me of movies like Tremors or Slither, low budget horror/comedy that comes out of nowhere to surprise me with how entertaining it is.

You wanna know something messed up. The actress playing the nurse goes on to play in an established British Franchise, with her characterization all but destroying it..... *THE INFAMOUS 13th DOCTOR!* 😱

For the Edgar Wright vibe you noticed, Joe Cornish worked with Wright and he also co produced this film The creatures are CGI enhanced practical effects.Terry Notary (notorious mocap and prostethic performer) supervised the creature performers. They digitally darkened the fur to the point it looks like pure darkness and added the glowing teeth

Didn't even remember that boyega was in this film. I liked him in star wars but didn't like him in pacific rim sequel or the movie in that case, but I can't believe I forgot that boyega was in this film. He's so young! I only watched this movie once when blockbuster was still around, and it is still a good entertaining film. Love the alien design too. How the teeth glow in the dark. Scary shit

i did film studies and Attack The Block was one of the films that we studied. (what the camera shots represent, lighting and soundtrack.) the aliens are a person in a costume and CGI is only used for when they open their mouths to show all them teeth. it was hard for the person in the costume to move and even though it was hella cold, inside the costume it felt like 50 degrees.

I'm glad you really liked this movie. It was a great surprise for me when I stumbled upon it a few years ago. One thing I wanted to mention since many people don't seem to notice, is that I love how the male aliens are constantly solid black. No matter how much light is on them, their bodies never reflect light or come into focus. It's like the light moves around them and just ignores them.

During lockdown in an interview, Boyega said he and Joe (Cornish) have been talking and have an idea for Attack The Block II. Fingers crossed!

Something people may not have noticed, near the beginning where we pan over to the graffiti and hear fireworks going off, not only is the graffiti the names of the main characters but the light from the fireworks cast shadows of people among those names indicating that contrary to what we see from Sam's perspective, the main characters were behind her at that point

Film 4 in the UK had a good run a while back in the UK with films they had a hand in and international films. Attack the Block, In Bruges, The Guard and an amazing Japanese film: Fish Story. All highly recommended. Fish Story is the best non-chronological film I have seen. A bit like Dark, but no actual time travel.

The thing I think you couldn't put your finger on is that UK cinema tends to have very strong classism themes, as that is sadly a pervasive part of UK culture. it also tends to lean less hopeful than US films.

Gotcha!! There’s hints of it that I’ve noticed that’s a little similar to that of America but it’s definitely strong in the UK!
