That shot of Nic Cage at the end, with the ear to ear grin is an image that stuck with me long after the film ended. I can't tell if it's insanity, extreme joy or a broken man. But whatever it is, it represents both victory and defeat.

Pyrrhic victory is a victory or success that comes at the expense of great losses or costs. That's the feeling you're looking at....oh and his mind is a cabbage due to being burnt out on LSD. Some trips you don't come back from. Hahaha.

I want to know how they did the editing in that scene especially the face melding shot. like is that just like some kind of fade between two shots or is it some kind of digital effect? Also I find the cheddar goblin to be both disturbing and hilarious. I mean he vomits Mac n Cheese, that’s fuckin great .

@CoDGplays I feel like it resembles Sandler in the sense that they do some bad movies and people judges them as if it was they're their only repertoire. Meanwhile, Sandler has Punch drunk Love and uncut gems, and Cage has Red Rock West, Face/off and Into the spiderverse.

True, and if you want to see more from this director (Panos Cosmatos), his first film is another dark and gritty psychedelic gem, "Beyond the Black Rainbow" it's a tougher watch because it's a bit slower and extremely bleak, but still highly recommend it, it's also *full* of symbolic imagery.

Panos Cosmatos, the director, mentioned in an interview for his first film how a lot of his inspiration comes from when he was a child. His parents would take him to the movie stores where he would see the covers of movies and imagine his own stories based off of only those images. You can see this stylistically in Mandy and Beyond the Black Rainbow.

When i finished this movie and the end credits appears... i know that i watched a masterpiece. I love Mandy, is my favorite movie, have everything, Mad Max with drugs, amazing cinematography, 80s style, synthwave sountrack, some type of cosmic existencial message, a lot of Metal and the pain of lost someone important. In the case of Cosmatos, his father, George Cosmatos, director of Rambo 2 and Cobra. This movie is a hell of a ride... *LITERALLY* This is a movie about love, lost, anger, revenge and grief. What a jewl.

I NEVER thought about Berserk when i saw this and i have NO idea how. Its right there and now i cant unsee it! I love this even more now. There are many parallels between this and Berserk. A woman violated/destroyed in front of the protagonist that sets him on his quest for revenge. The crafting and taking up of a legendary weapon. Inhuman monsters that "ascended" (in this case through an extremely powerful drug) that were once human. An event that opens reality and lets the protagonist see into the astral world (again in this case with the drug). The antagonist is in control of horrors under the guise of a holy figure. His entire journey is a dark struggle. Its all right there. I also got several Bloodborne vibes from this. Where by taking the acid like the blood in Bloodborne you are able to enter the dream. A sort of alternate reality, created by an old god, (lovecraftian stuff) that intersects with our own. I think what i like most about this is that depending on how you interpret the movie there may actually be some supernatural elements happening. Is he just fighting some junkies and burn outs, or is he going on a dark quest slaying monsters, cultists, and a dark priest before finally ascending and joining his love in the astral plane? Who is to say?....I guess each viewer is.

You know what I thought while watching it in the theater? Well, I took my budding filmmaker 14 year old son who had seen the trailer and really wanted to see it, while I had NOT seen the trailer, so I spent the movie thinking I was a terrible parent. We both survived, thankfully. Super interesting film with amazing production values and filmmaking, but a little too out there for me to totally love it. I did recently get my son a Mandy face mask though (but it's pretty crap so I wouldn't actually wear it out in public).

This is the most INSANE movie I've ever seen. It instantly became my new favorite movie of all time, knocking Jacob's Ladder out of 1st place. The best way I've been able to describe it to others is it's like Lost Highway meets Natural Born Killers meets I Spit on Your Grave. That description still doesn't do it justice, but it's about as close as I can get. And as far as "art house" films, Lost Highway (David Lynch) is one of the best. If you've never seen that one, you'd probably dig it.

I’m so glad you reviewed this! I had seen a teaser for this in an article that was in my Facebook feed. The teaser trailer looked incredible. I then found out a recommendation to watch this as stoned as possible. When it came out to stream I watched it the night of. I must have smoked six bowls by myself. Needless to say I was blitzed. It was an incredible experience. I have since gotten sober. I love the character design. What people are wearing, what they’re doing. Particularly Nic Cage. Love his clothes in the movie. Love the gear he eventually wears and the weapons he uses. The whole scene after he gets captured again is so bat shit crazy. I think it’s fantastic. The director of this is the son of the director of Rambo 2 and Tombstone. It’s crazy but there’s elements of Rambo 2 that I see in this movie. Again, so glad you did this. Great review!

I loved the use of pulp fantasy, science fiction elements, and the barbarian elements. Mandy's pulp fantasy novel, Red's ax is half way between Conan the barbarian and alien, Red is crucified not *just* like Jesus but like Conan the Barbarian is crucified on the Tree of Woe, the unexplained religious relics of the cult (the horn, knife, and old tome Red tosses aside) and the alien landscape Red drives into at the end. The chemist is a wizard. All of it is a fantastical blend of fantasy and sci fi tropes and references all wrapped up in a psychedelic rampage of revenge. With a beautiful color palette and an incredible soundtrack.

His father, George P Cosmatos directed another movie you reacted to, Tombstone, sadly I think he got back seat directed by Kurt Russell. My favorite moment might be when Cage is yelling, "Give me my shirt!" I needed that levity. This film is an instant classic, albeit perhaps a "cult" classic. LOL. It elevates many aspects of a great film. Acting, direction, photography, editing, music and sound are all taken to the next level w/ this film. It's very much a "midnight movie" giant. We then proceeded to have a huge argument about art and how art should communicate things, and what is ok to show on screen. It got pretty heated, ya'll. After a few months she confessed that the reaction she had was purely because the movie freaked her out so much that she could not process it, and had to lash out at anyone that had brought her there. favorite part: wife and I got to see this in a packed theater and the moment that Nic looks at the screen just before the super LSD mix thing the entire theater erupted in cheers.

I love this movie bc it sees no rules. But I loved the Heavy metal animated film inspired dream sequences. The aesthetic the title card halfway thru the movie and that bathroom was so accurate for the time period it hurt.

I went into this blind expecting a quirky Nic Cage movie. I could not have been less prepared or more blown away. What a beautifully metal ride! My friend, a die-hard Cage fan, didn't love the gore but to me, the impulsive cringing and looking away is half the fun. Plus dueling chainsaws?! Come onnn! There's something for everyone. Have you watched Cage in Color Out Of Space? That's another wild one of his, but less demons and more Lovecraft.

man, the movie opened with a King Crimson tune, one of my favourite bands ever. I knew the moment it came on I was gonna have a blast.

I didn't put it together until my 2nd or 3rd watch that the movie is all from the imagination of Mandy. I think Nic Cage's whole character is a story Mandy's inventing before us. IRL I think his character is maybe away from home a lot (and maybe has a drinking problem related to something in his past when he was in the military) but she imagines him as this fearless avenger.

This movie is bonkers! Nic Cage is a boss, trying to get him on board for a project. "Color Out of Space" is another awesome flick.

Mandy is just a metal vinyl album cover come to life. It's insane, beautiful, intense, weird, brutal, and trippy as fuck.

This movie blew me away, I loved the visuals, the performances, the music, the gore; a good time, no drugs required! But I can't believe you didn't react to the "Cheddar Goblin" commercial! That was hilarious and weird, and I liked Nicolas Cage's dazed reaction to it while in a state of shock over Mandy's death; right before his meltdown in the bathroom.

Such an awesome reaction, I've been looking forward to this one, Mandy was a crazy ass movie, I watched it in theaters when it first came out. This director is teaming up with Nicholas Cage again for their next film, I'm pumped for another collaboration with them

Btw, another film I would recommend is Persona by Ingmar Bergman. It's a great place to start on a director with so much great material.

I remember seeing this in a large theater in Moscow that got many auditoriums, I think 20 or something; for that film it was a small one, and it was packed. I could tell these were all fans and afficionados. this theater is gone now...

Chainsaw duels have been done before in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Phantasm 2 (which also features a super long one), but this one is the coolest.
