I recommend it, things to keep in mind : this is different gameplay from Elden ring, missions instead of open world, no s exploit, and less forgiving boss fights if you can't adapt and customize your mech
@dagonofthedepths
@dagonofthedepths Год назад
Kind of depends. If your expecting Elden Ring but robots then no. The game controls totally different, has a different difficulty curve and is reliant on you experimenting on mech building. I feel a lot of that is the polar opposite of Elden Ring where you are focused on slower paced defensive combat with a build your never expected to change. In Armored Core, you need to be aggressive and always think about what you're piloting. If you're struggling with something, it can be your AC as much as your skills. Also, most enemies in the game are trivial so you get this weird difficulty curves where you do easy missions then run into a boss that'll just destroy you if you don't know what you're doing. Still, I think the game is still very much a From Soft game with a lot of the same over all design philosophies of story related gameplay and obtuse storytelling. Like the reason most missions versus cannon fodder MTs are easy because ACs are powerful weapons until you run into a boss that outclasses your AC then you're the small fry. Or how you're really have to pay attention to understand anything going on before you hit new game +. Minor spoilers I guess but 1 example is Walter mentions the pilot Sulla was a survivor of gen 1 augmentation. I don't think they ever take the player aside and explain what augmentation is or that gen 1 has like a 10% survival rate. All they really say blatantly is 621 is gen 4 and he's kind of a relic where that generation has a lot of problems. You have to kind of hunt to know we're on gen 9 or 10. Which I think that story telling is pretty key to a lot of From Soft games. Also why you get all these lore vids on it.

Do not expect Elden Ring gameplay from Armored Core. It plays very differently, and is incredibly input-heavy. There are no I-frames here to save you, there is no hanging back and slowly chipping away at things, there is only hitting hard and fast before your enemies do the same to you.

Its like Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3, but its a shooter rather than a fighting game, but its also kind of a fighting game, and then theme it with Neon Genesis Evangelion. I would recommend it to someone who likes customization, satisfyingly brutal combat, and psychological thrillers

All of the mechs we see fighting are actually the predecessors of the AC pilot we play (621) who is the person they are "waking up." As you said, Handler Walter lost his 3 AC pilots on that mission, so he had to get a new one. We don't even have a name but a serial # and a callsign.

It makes it so much darker to think they were brought back with pieces of the other pilots, which may be why you’re treated like a new person; Walter is like Dr. Frankenstein and you are his monster, with Patches the Igor-like assistant (I don’t know if this character or Swinburne is supposed to be this game’s patches, but that name is great for a back-alley cyber-surgeon)

I find it interesting that you don't see a single humanizing feature on even the human character standing in frame, you only see their role in the machine. You have "The doctor who repairs the pilot," "The slab of meat that pilots the mech," and "The order that activates the first two." No one is a person; they're all just cogs keeping the machine functional, the machine in this case being the war.
@raymurray3401

It’s even more interesting that as the game progresses you can actually notice Walter seems to become more emotionally attached to 621 treating them more like an equal instead of as a sacrificial pawn.
@matasa7463
@matasa7463 11 месяцев назад
@@raymurray3401 You'll actually learn in the end that they never treated any of the pilots as just pawns to be sacrificed. They're remembered by the group as martyrs for the cause. They'll sacrifice themselves without hesitation to stop the cataclysm. And really, the whole game, despite never being able to see a single face, the character of the people you meet are always interesting and memorable, from the scared pilots screaming about their doom as they face an enemy they can't hope to best, to the fearless zealots fighting for their homeland... to the heroes and villains from all sides vying for supremacy and power. Their human nature, both good and bad, comes right to the forefront, and you really get the sense of talking and fighting against people, not machines.

AC6 is a prime example of what I appreciate about Japanese creators taking influence from western stuff: they usually run it through a filter that results in something very interesting. This game basically takes Dune and mashes Gundam through it and sees what pops out. It’s awesome.

I think the overall aesthetic to the current AC6 really speaks to that gundam stereotype with mono-eyed mechs being canon fodder (which makes sense since this is also a bandai published product and not too recently the artist Wataru Inata did work for gundam WFM) for the main guys to k1ll and its like we are playing in the perspective of a grunt in his journey to become the raven which in previous games depict them to be mercenaries of freedom and resolve having their own free wills no longer bound by any force and being able to choose who or what to fight for and in this game we do exactly that, we journey to become a true raven as we strive for different outcomes and being able to choose a side that suits our ideal that lends to our creativity as we build up our AC from being a soulless looking grunt to an AC that will bring fear through the sight of our insignia and they will not call us by g13, 621, or wall climber, they will remember our name as raven for we inherited the will of ravens

The story in this game really does make it feel like you are nothing but faceless a callsign. A machine whose only purpose is to wage wars on others behalf. It changes in later part of the story, as the player is influenced by addition of another being, but even then, at times, it feels like the player is still being manipulated by that being. The visuals really add to that whole feeling, that we are unthinking, unfeeling war machine bred for destruction.

@Aurilion44 Год назад
Not "at times". AC was always very bleak and gray (apart from MC of AC4). You are absolutely being manipulated by both operators, but you can also just see that both sides are also decent humans undearneath it all. They are just very driven, determined, burned by war and willing to sacrifice much to achieve their ideals. There are no good guys or rather most of the people you encounter in the game (with exceptions of spelled out psychos who delight in war) are all good/decent guys, but with differing goals, ideals and sides. Quite a tragedy

In every Armored Core worldview, we are the mercenaries who pilot the Armored Core, our entire lives are spent working for money, and to the corporations that hire us to do their jobs, we are just machine parts that can be discarded and replaced at any time, and basically, we have no human rights at all. As protagonists, it would be the best if we started out as no-name rookies. If it's the worst, we might start out as paralyzed cripples and be transformed by the corporation into augmented humans just to drive the Armored Core. In order to be free, we have to work for the corporation all the time to earn the money that can buy back our healthy bodies and freedom.

The origin of 621 is something that harkens back to the original Armored Core. You are a debter and sold off as you no longer have the rights of a human. Your character is property and forced to undergo augmentation surgery to be a pilot.

I think it's interesting that despite Fromsoft generally going so light on cutscenes and "overt" storytelling their shot composition and direction for their cutscenes and pre rendered trailers are among the best in the industry. It really speaks to how well they understand how to construct a mood and convey themes and subtle narrative touches often without saying a word. This is a story trailer that at once tells you basically nothing about the actual story of the game while also communicating absolutely everything you need to know about what to expect and the mood and themes of the game. And so so much of it is done with directorial choices and dialogue that communicates far beyond the actual words being said. Fromsoft storytelling isn't for everyone for sure but it's absolutely spot on for my tastes and they do a phenomenal job of it. Despite not really seeing a single human the whole time there's moments the camera really lingers on the AC's heads specifically and gets across this sense of cold metallic indifference of the AC but also rage (like when the AC is blasting its gatling gun into the MT) or sorrow (like right before the suicide run into the artillery). Also very interesting touches to have the moments of the missile barrage landing and the final explosion be so understated. Despite how intense and hype moments of the trailer can be it radiates this deep pain and sorrow over all the fighting and destruction.

One thing that's always been a theme in AC: Losing your humanity gradually to whatever external stimuli exist of the era. It was usually corporations, capitalism that grew to monolithic horrible entities that would prey on the debt riddled. Similarly that's what happened here, someone too deep in debt sold their body and mind to be augmented not even to a corp just a shady fellow promising a chance for money.

The person with all the needles isn’t the guys who failed being repaired, it’s a different person entirely. It’s the player character. You are an augmented human. A mercenary so deep in debt that you’re literally a wage slave. AC pilots usually must be augmented due to the strain that operating an AC puts on your body and also so they can keep up with the inhuman speed and reaction that it takes to operate an AC. Also, as with most people fighting in these corporate wars, you are very expendable as this trailer shows with all these pilots being nameless numbers who are just thrown into the meat grinder. They accomplish their mission but they die in the process, but their lives aren’t given a second thought. Will you find a way to subvert the endless greedy corporate war or will you just be another faceless number?

I played all 3 endings and the story is amazing, big fights cinematic finisher shots zooming out as you deal the final bit of damage, fights can be either easy or intense by what you struggle to deal with by your current mech design. Most parts are by default good for their right usage. There's no leveling system. You change stats by parts, so your limit is your wallet and opportunities. Your first mission is the skill check to complete. Then the real tutorial begins to see what you'll resort to to overcome the remaining chapter 1. From there the real light of everything takes shape and secrets become more abundant.

A bit late to the party, but judging from what we know, its safe to assume that augmented Humans are still capable of moving around outside their machines, hell the top Pilot isnt Augmented at all. But 621 comes from the 4th generation, which still uses Coral and thus can be assumed to be brutal at least, looking back how 1st Gen only had a survival Rate of 10% of all Participents. But, there seems to be at least implications that 621 lost his voice. But the fact you even theoretically have the possibility to have the surgery undone, shows that even then you still have hope, even when leashed by some stranger and racking up corpses for credits.
