The guy that died" (41:14) in the cinematic, the identification tag read: "M. Koiter", for Michel Koiter (3 May 1984 - 18 March 2004), a Blizzard artist who died from heart failure at the age of 19.

the relevance to the story has nothing to do with the name however, just has to do with the fact that this "nameless" soldier, was from the Mar-Sara company, where it all started, the revolution the first game, etc. and to Jimmy raynor the revolution leader who cares about the people, recognising and respecting the fact that his soldiers are men he cares about, as they respect the burden they chose to bear, no matter the outcome emboldening the fire of his resolve to end this matter once and for all.

That final scene between Tychus and Jim will always stick as very intense for several factors to me. While Tychus did betray him, he intentionally gave Raynor just about enough time for him to react. "I made a deal with the devil, Jimmy. She dies, I go free". Such a short sentence and told Raynor absolutetly eveything he needed to know and do something, and that something was not just saving Kerrigan, but also freeing his lifelong friend from being in a cage. Starcraft II had some master framing and storytelling, man. It ain't nothing revolutionary, but it's so well done. Starcraft always had some grade A storytelling with some stellar (hehe) cast of characters.

Unfortunately, a lot of the story is also told during gameplay, so some context gets lost. Though thats far too long for this format. Some interesting tidbits: - Tychus is actually sealed inside his marine armor, which doesn't happen normally if ever to someone who actually uses marine power armor. And they discover there's an explosive in there, should he betray someone(they never find out who, until its revealed in that final cinematic) he could be blown up at any time,. So Tychus can't back out, even if he wants to. - The custscene of kerrigan getting left on the planet is actually a mission you play in Starcraft 1. So its less of a dream as the cinematic describes and more of a flashback. Though obivously raynor woudln't be seeing what we saw. These scene also completely replicates the original mission's dialogue. That cutscene shows the cinematic of you "winning" that mission. As she's left to die. This is also when the Zerg take her and transform her into the Queen of Blades. This is also the moment referenced in the news cinematic of mengsk dealing with reporters. As he used a beacon to lure the zerg to that planet to kill off the previous regime. - Dominion are the red armored enemies. And your soldiers in the campaign are all colored Blue, which is part of the significance of Raynor finding the dead blue marine. One of his soldiers, who gave their life for the cause.

One thing that is lost by not having context of who the characters are from the first game, too, is the fight between Kerrigan and Zeratul. Zeratul uses warp blades, a tech specifically used by the protoss of Shakuras, where injuries caused by warp blades CANNOT be regenerated by the zerg. Kerrigan regenerates from having her wing cut off by a warp blade. She is a new evolution of zerg... the Shakuran protoss lost their only edge over their ancient enemy...

@@sintanan469 Im not 100% certain on this but I dont think this is the case. I think If im not mistaken it was less about the weapon and more having to do with the DT energies they channeled into the Cerebrates, it was more the ability to disrupt and destroy the mind though a mental connection, this is how they were able to get a glimps into what the Overmind was planing was though the severed connection between the Cerebrates and the Overmind. The look on Kerrigan's face I think was looking more at the angle of which her wing was cut and how close it actually came to taking her head.

quick rundown: - The 'bug aliens' are the Zerg. In the first game, they captured Kerrigan and turned her into the Queen of Blades because she is a MASSIVELY powerful psychic. - However, they only had the chance to catch her because Arcturus Mengsk betrayed her, which resulted in Raynor ditching him and making a band of rebels. - Kerrigan, as The Queen of Blades, killed billions of humans in a vicious war that she instigated for the most part. - Mengsk has hidden that he's been a pragmatic and cruel despot behind shiny lies for the entirety of his reign; his own son, the crown prince that we meet, had actually been hidden by his mother, only for Mengsk to basically kidnap his own son and force him into being the crown prince, when all Valerian wanted to do was go be an archeologist. - Tychus is from James Raynor's backstory; when Raynor had been a teenager, he'd been a homeless criminal, robbing trains and other such activities to make ends meet. His best friend was Tychus Findley. One day, the job the two had taken turned out to be a setup, and Tychus was caught, and he willingly took the blame for both of them, and James got his chance to move on, at Tychus' request before getting arrested. Afterwards, James became the legitimate Marshal of the colony of Mar Sara, something he could feel genuinely proud of. - Matt Horner (the admiral that keeps calling Tychus 'Convict') doesn't trust Tychus because he remembers all the stories James has told him about what he and Tychus used to get up to together. - Mengsk let Tychus out of prison, but the suit he was put into is set to kill him if he disobeys any orders from Arcturus Mengsk. He was given a mission - kill Kerrigan after Raynor strips away her Zerg-ness with the artifact they're hunting for. At the last scene, Tychus tells Raynor that he "made a deal with the devil" as a code phrase to let Raynor know what the situation was. He knew this would give Raynor the head's-up he needed to choose to either let Tychus kill Kerrigan, or to kill Tychus himself and save the man from a lifetime as Mengsk's attack dog, as he knew Mengsk would never let him free just because he'd done what he was told. - Zeratul is a Protoss, and in exile due to some events from the first game, wherein he had to mercy kill the leader of his home nation because she was being forcibly puppeted by a zerg orgnaism that was eating her alive. However, the other Protoss hadn't known about the parasite, and so blamed Zeratul for killing her. He has been a good, steadfast friend to James Raynor since they met, and has long been an advocate for peace and peaceable relations even between the different species if possible.

A really interesting angle I always thought of when it came to wings of liberty was the way a lot of it felt like a western. All the characters have southern accents, the music is all guitar-y and twangy, and I thought it was a great observation to say it was like Star Wars in that it's all futuristic but also old looking, and it creates an interesting aesthetic. I think you will have a great time watching the story unfold over Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.

The two cutscenes with the black guy who turns red and goes invisible are alternates. Tosh (the black guy) is set up to be hard to trust and very shady. He's a "Spectre", which is like a psychic soldier who was forced to go through some horrible training and stuff to become essentially government assassins, but the defining thing about the Spectres as they make clear is that they kinda all went insane and have psychopathic tendencies. That's why he has all this voodoo stuff. The Spectres were deemed too unstable and the government just threw them all in maximum security prison so they couldn't be a threat, with Tosh being one of a few to escape. Nova (the blonde girl) is very direct and honest. She's a "Ghost", which is the standard psychic soldier like Kerrigan was. She is also a *currently* serving assassin/spec ops for the government. So then the choice: Tosh approaches you to prison break all the inmates of the government's max security prison, so he can get the other Spectres out. Nova approaches you saying that most of the prisoners are legit baddies and not just political prisoners, points out the Spectres are all psychopathic murderers, and points out that letting everyone in the maximum security prison free would probably have some adverse effects on public safety. So she proposes that you work together. If you denied Tosh he'd become a dangerous enemy anyways, so she'll work with you to kill him on the promise she then leaves you alone for a while. Basically, "enemy of my enemy is my temporary friend". The prison break scene is if you side with Tosh, him being assassinated is you siding with Nova. Important note: siding with Tosh is canon. You can walk around your ship and talk with people between missions, and Tosh has a good number of and some of the best conversations. It becomes pretty clear that he's far more jaded than he is untrustworthy and is an all around bro. Then he's confirmed the canon choice in Heart of the Swarm, because he's noted as trying to save Jim during that game. This is one of two times in the campaign where you can chose to side with either side of a preexisting conflict. The other one didn't seem to have a cutscene here, but that one isn't really that important to the story anyways.

@@falsnamae3511 I haven't played WoL in a long time, but I did play it a lot. I am confident that there was no mention of Dr. Hansen being at fault for anything that happened to her people. They were attacked, because that's what Zerg do. They tried to settle down somewhere, the Zerg virus happened - and Dr. Hansen was utterly clueless as to what that was. After escaping from there some people were still infected and she tried to cure them. The only potential deception was her being quiet about being infected herself - which may not even be true, she may have exposed herself to the virus after the chat with Selendis. And throughout the entire game she says nothing that would incriminate her - I delayed finishing her quest right up until Char, just to hear what she had to say about the other missions.

Starcraft is one of my all time favorite games, the story is just so rich, and spans over both the first game and its expansion, and all three parts of the second game, couple of points, the video with the press conference the audio the woman plays on her recorder, is actually from the first game before Mengsk became Emperor. Second, the music that plays in the background in the cantine on the ship, actually really sounds like the music from Firefly (my fav tv show btw ☺️). The redhead girl in the picture (Kerrigan), and the one we saw in the cinematic where they left her behind, was Mengsks right hand that he betrayed, and she was then turned into the queen of blades by the Zerg. That said, i still love how attentive you are, catching details and understanding the story most would not without actually playing the game. I'm pleased to see that the core of the story was still communicated and appreciated. There are a lot of details and context in played missions that you miss with just watching cutscenes. I.e. the dead blue marine (in the story itself, it is also a tribute out of universe) is "just" one of Raynor's crew. Raynor's faction are outfitted in blue armor while dominion is red, and this detail is kept through the cutscenes. Its a detail that identifies "who" at an immediate instinctive level for anyone who played through the past several hours of the story. There are a lot of major narrative details that can go right over your head without the actual gameplay, but Blizzard did a remarkable job communicating a compelling story even without this context.

The Confederacy home planet was Tarsonis (where Kerrigan was left behind) and wore white armour (as Warfield does, before turning to the Dominion). The Dominion home planet is Korhal and they wear red armour (as some of the marines that come with Valerian's forces). Raynor's home planet is Mar Sara (where he is drinking in the first clip) and his raiders wear blue armour (as Tychus and M. Koiter). Raynor himself wore green armour in the first game, but has his black armour in the second game. This is both to stand out from the rest of the army and to just look badass. The first game follows Raynor joining up with Mengsk to overthrow the confederacy, but Mengsk has no interest in sharing the leadership, so leaves Kerrigan on the surface to get rid of both her and Raynor. It then goes through Kerrigan's transformation and rise to power, and her destroying the Protoss homeworld of Aiur.

Watching this for the first time - I never played the second game - and there’s a lovely touch in here at 24:19. The choral “aah”s that come in there are singing The Naval Hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” - specifically what feels like the 3rd and 4th lines of the 6-line verse, which has lyrics like “And bid its angry tumult cease, and give, for wild confusion, peace,” followed by a musically unresolved “Amen.” Appropriate when dealing with a space navy of sorts, and poignant for Jim Raynor’s observation that the positive result of the fight “isn’t for the likes of us.”

Starcraft 2 & it's 2 expansions are in my top 3 games of all time. The world building, the characters, the music. This is the blizzard I love and is a game very close to my heart as it got me through a bad time and acted as an escape. Its also one of the very few media things to bring a tear to my eyes. The others the ending of blackadder goes forth, certain parts of Mass Effect 3 and How to train your Dragon 2 and 3 Also I got to work on it as a beta tester, which was a joy. There is actually a lot more cinematics for wings but they are for the branching missions. The dog tag for the dead marine is for Michel Koiter (3 May 1984 - 18 March 2004), a Blizzard artist who died from heart failure at the age of 19. To young a age. I really hope you watch the the heart of the swarm and legacy of the void cinematics as they improve in quality for each game. Also they have a couple of famous voices in them. The cinematics with Tosh and Nova killing Tosh is part of a branch of the campaign. You either join up with Tosh or Nova and either cinematic is the reward. Also the dead marine armour in blue just symbolises the troops Raynor fights with, the Mar Sara revolutionaries, while the red are the Confederate troops of Mengsk and thus junior/prince Valerians troops. Oh, and the suit of armour that Tychus is in, it is his actual prison, a cell with a death switch in it.

A note about Jim Raynor that you wanted but didn't happen is the flask. His story didn't end so it never needed to happen. The second and third games' set of cinematics show he changes even more (for better or for worse) despite it not being about him anymore and acts as his final growing moments. You've seen both of them and know how he begins and how he ends. He never has a 'say no to the flask' moment but he does have a moment of turning that acts like it which is nice.

Tosh is related to a bit of a storyline regarding Spectres/ghosts, stealth operatives that at the end of the storyline you decide whether to work with the cold blooded killer Tosh and free other murdering convicts like him, or work with Nova, a Ghost loyal to Mengsk, although if you help her kill Tosh she teaches you how to make other ghosts to help you out

To answer a couple questions. Raynor used to be a Marshal for the Confederacy, which was the ruling government power. Mengsk used to be what Raynor is in SC2, just a rebel with an army, the main difference is he wanted to rule the sector of space that these humans preside in (earth and the Kopruru (sp?) sector are a ways away from eachother) using media and information to "win" over the people. Anyway Mengsk saves Raynor when Raynor's original planet got attacked by the zerg and then the Protoss shortly after. He then joins Mengsks rag tag group (Sons of Korhal I think they were called) and runs missions, getting close to Kerrigan and what not until we see what happens at New Gettysburg. He ends up leaving with one of the Battlecruisers and crew of people who want nothing to do with Mengsk after he used and abandoned Kerrigan (the planet as well) when he got her to activate a Psi-Emitter that attracts zerg. Matt Horner (spiffy guy who is always giving Raynor shit until he is a leader again) is like the "1st mate" of the ship and does all the logistical stuff Raynor doesn't want to deal with. He respects Raynor very much and wants nothing but the best for him in the end. Kind of like Raynor's "good" conscience that won't leave him alone. Before Raynor was a Marshal he used to run in a gang called the Heaven's Devils, Tychus was one of the big players in the gang with him. I think he ended up selling Tychus out because Tychus did something he didn't agree with. The Xel'naga artifact is something you spend the game collecting parts of in order to "Kill" the Queen of Blades/Save Kerrigan from the zerg.
@TankHunter678
@TankHunter678 3 месяца назад
Actually Tychus was the one who sold himself out to save the rest of the crew. It is why he has no beef with Raynor until the very end, he would rather have kept fighting the good fight alongside Raynor but when the devil says pull the trigger he has no choice.

I cant even summarize the amount of happiness that I get from watching people even after all these years seeing my favourite game, checking it out for the first time and maybe even falling in love with it Its amazing what blizzard delivered to us back then and I think the thing that shows this the most is even after +10 years, we can watch you see these cutscenes/cinematics for the first time without even having any idea about the story of the game and you can clearly tell who's who- whats going on, how it all develops during the game And I can promise this feeling only gets better when you actually boot it up (wings of liberty is free by the way ^^) and beat it for yourself Because then, especially the final cutscenes will be that much more epic and rewarding I can't wait to see you reacting to HoTS since I mainly play zerg in the game so I might be ever so slightly biased towards that campaign And I must not forget to mention that you actually taught me a lot within these reaction videos, and I got to appreciate filmmaking or notice little details that I had no Idea were there, even tho I felt their effects on how I would come to interpret their meanings :3

So as some quick backing/lore. In the first game, mankind has essentially developed and expanded out. In the process, we've got some humans, special soldiers with psychic abilities in addition to plain regular soldiers. Jim was a sheriff of a small town assisting in the first game and got caught up in the fight against the Zerg. In the process, Kerrigan (who is a special, psychic ability soldier) 'died' only to be 'revived' as the Queen of Blades due to her psychic abilities. You go through the second game as Jim, essentially starting to gather a crew and eventually end up with the artifact in a deal to try and save her near the end, thus 'purifying' her and turning her human again. Some scenes seem disjointed because you miss sections of in-game stuff, like Tosh who was the voodoo assassin who you temporarily aligned with and had to choose either his mission or Nova's, and if you choose Nova's, you get the scene you saw of Tosh threatening you and Nova assassinating him for you. As a backer on the whole friendly alien, it's a race called the Protoss, an advanced race older than mankind, who are almost entirely psychic and have a sort of connection to one another. Zeratul was a big part of the first game and helped to essentially align Protoss and Humans (sometimes, sometimes not) against the Zerg.
@sintanan469
@sintanan469 4 месяца назад
To add to this, the original lore of SC1 had humanity develop rudimentary psychic powers on Earth thanks to designer drugs. As part of a way to handle overpopulation and to create stability after a world-spanning unifying war, the unified Earth government bundled up everyone that was a convinct, a major drug addict, a psychic, and everyone else deemed "unworthy" or a "threat to stability" and ship them to the Koprulu Sector on three massive cold sleep starships. The original plan of the Earth government was to send these unwanted off to be useful in establishing a new human colony among the stars and by the time humanity had the faster-than-light technology to become a true stellar civilization then they can reclaim the new wayward colony for a jumpstart on controlling the galaxy. This lore was altered slightly between SC1 and SC2 as sensibilities changed because to turns out having a story about your ruling government discarding unwanted people was a taboo subject at the time of SC2's release due to world news and politics.

In the Warcraft and StarCraft games, there's a lot of dialog that happens outside of cinematic cutscenes and appears as part of missions and gameplay. To know the full story, I recommend looking up a StarCraft 1 + Brood war recap. There's a lot of history there. I found this one after a quick search: "STARCRAFT REMASTERED - The Complete Story Movie (4K ULTRA HD)" Note that Wings of Liberty had many elements that were a love letter to Firefly, hence the western vibe.

in a way SC2 uses both the stuff in the cinematics, and what i think you meant by it not being shot like a movie, as quite a few of the cutscene type things are part of the missions, introductions to the point of the mission or a cutscene when it's over so it's not just "do mission, oh good, it done, you don't get to know any kind of impact or interaction that happens as a result"

One thing that gripped me when Starcraft 2 wings of Liberty came out was the first time. when they showed the intro before the game came out. they had it without voice over. it was just the background ambiance and the music, which was very powerful in my opinion. I still see that version as being the superior intro, don't get me wrong the voice over was good but when they announced Starcraft 2 was coming back in the day... that is what gripped me far more, because music tends to give it a stronger introduction than with having a voice over. The original intro introduced as a teaser was 14 years ago... Here's a link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rnSlg-I03oQ.html&ab_channel=BlizzardEntertainment I found the original I'm curious to know what you think between the two.. you'll see what I mean. in any case you're doing a great job and I love what you're doing keep up the great work.

To answer some of your questions with a bit of backstory: Factions: Terran Confederacy - The original human government in the colonies originally made up from the survivors of three ark-ships which were basically all the worst people earth could muster. Sons of Korhal - Rebel group led by Mengsk and aided by Kerrigan who was a former Confederate assassin with mind powers. The conclave - Main Protoss faction, basically religious nuts with ridiculous tech and mind powers. Dark Templar - Protoss faction in exile considered heretics (because they use "the dark side of the force" while the conclave use the "light side") UED - The Earth government Overmind - The gigantic being who controls all Zerg - in turn controlled by the Dark god Amon. Auir - Protoss Homeworld Shakuras - World where the Dark Templar hid from the conclave for hundreds of years. The first Starcraft starts out with "the overmind" who controls all Zerg, attacking human worlds, this forces the conclave to eradicate entire human planets of all life to stop them. Jim Raynor whos a marshal on a backwater planet teams up with Mengsk and Sarah Kerrigan under the sons of Korhal. Mengsk is a manipulative bastard though and is secretly only out to become the Emperor of what is then the Confederacy. They work together over a couple of missions where they fight the Terran Confederacy, Protoss Conclave and Zerg, and get hold of a device that can lure the Zerg to it, which Mengsk uses to attack confederate worlds, ending on New Gettysburg where he leave Kerrigan to her fate despite Jims protests. Kerrigan is transformed into the Queen of Blades but at that point like all other Zerg she's under control of the Overmind. Raynor bands together with the Dark Templar (Zeratul mainly, as well as the more open minded Conclave protoss Tassadar who sacrifices himself) they destroy the Overmind by merging the "dark and light side of the force" and channeling it into the overmind setting Kerrigan 'free'. Kerrigan fools them into thinking she's back to her own self again (while in fact being controlled by the dark god amon) and they team up to kill some feral zerg that are trying to make a new overmind under the auspice of her not wanting to be controlled again, then she murders one of Jim's protoss friends Fenix and reveals that she's had the Dark Templar matron (their leader) under her control the entire time, this forces Zeratul to kill (the matron) Razshagal to free her of her mental enslavement. She proceeds to lay waste to Auir forcing the conclave to flee to Shakuras where they kinda make up and accept each other again. Meanwhile the UED shows up and basically tries to take over, They are routed and Kerrigan follows them and kills the expeditionary fleet they sent before they can return home then barricades herself on the Zerg homeworld of Char to sulk a bit while Mengsk remains Emperor and the Protoss prepare to retake their homeworld.

We have a lot of context to cover, let's just start with basics. 3 main races/species: - Terrans - Humans from the Earth - Protoss - The Civilised Alien people - Zerg - Tyranid like Swarm Dominion of Man (Red) are an interstellar imperial monarchy faction of Terrans rulling in in Koprulu sector and beyond, that took over in their revolution against The Confederacy (Grey/White). Back then, they were know as terrorist group "Sons of Korhal", Korhal being the planet they originated which became a capital of the Dominion. Arcturus Mengsk (emperor guy) was a leader of those (Red) groups, during the story of Starcraft 1 he saved Mar Sara Colonial Militia (blue) from both Zerg invasion and Confederacy oppression. Jim Raynor (the guy who drinks a lot) was a Marshal of that Militia force and thus he joined Sons Of Korhal (Red=>Later Dominion) where he met Lieutenant Sarah Kerrigan (The Ginger girl, one who turned into tentacle hair Queen of Blades). In their first meeting she called Raynor a pig over what she read in his mind. Kerrigan was a Ghost - A special force unit often gifted with psionic powers ordered with cover ops tasks utilising clocking technology. During the conflict Mengsk come to conflict with Raynor and Kerrigan by committing war crimes such as using a beacon to summon swarm of Zergs on the Confederacy planets. Kerrigan questioning Mengsk's casual war crimes ended in New Gettysburg (14:39) where tasked to defend Zerg forces from Protoss purifying forces got abandoned to be devoured by the Zerg. This caused Jim Raynor to defect and form Anti-Mengsk rebel faction know as Raynor's Raiders, adopting blue colour, resembling one of Mar Sara Militia before joining Mengsk. Zerg's master Overmind decided to capture Kerrigan and infest her over her immense psionic powers creating bratty Queen of Blades (Purple accented Zergs). During the conflict of Zerg and Protoss, zerg found out Protos home world "Aiur" controlled by blue Protoss and back then Conclave. Blue Protoss had Civil war over Tassadar cooperating with split faction of Protoss "Nerazim" (Green Protoss) and refusing to exterminate terrans in zerg infected sectors, even going as far as helping them. But eventually they assassinated (through Tassadar's sacrifice) the Overmind giving rise to Kerrigan's raise to power. Now we have period know as Brood Wars - Blue Protoss had to find refuge in Green Protoss land, Red Terrans were attacked by UED - United Earth Directorate, so guys from earth wanted to take control over split Terran factions in far corners of the Space. Small expedition force almost tumbled new established Dominion of Man if not help of remaining big factions (Raynor, Blue+Green Protoss) and Kerrigan who helped and backstabbed all other factions (herself or by proxy), defeating UED and taking control of all split Zerg broods after which she became dormant until events of StarCraft 2. History lesson done, time for SC2 stuff. Tychus (big Blue Marine) was locked in the Marine armour with a killswitch bomb to ensure he will do the job. Back on Mar Sara, recolonised Raynor starts revolution against Mengsk being cartoonishly evil to local population. When they were waiting to depart from there Mar Sara got once again swarmed by Zerg and Raynor's boys had to hold on until his friend Matt Horner arrived to the rescue in Hyperion (the battlecruiser spaceship). 22:30 - is one of the split missions outros in which we choose to help Gabriel Tosh who is a Spectre (like a Ghost, but red and on specific drugs or they go mental) to liberate his buddies from a prison planet. 26:50 - other split mission outro in which we choose to help Ghost Nova against Tosh wanting to release bunch of unstable spectre boys from prison. 24:50 - Raynor got access to Mengsk's adjutant from New Gettysburg that contained all data and transmission, proving him abandoning all troops on New Gettysburg and indirectly creating Kerrigan. Just before they infiltrated 3 transmission towers in the capital of dominion, giving all the info to the bunch of news reporters. 40:50 - In this mission we are tasked to rescue as many as possible of dropping Dominion forces to then come for the rescue of general Harfield who crashlanded. 40:55 - Depicts Dominion forces under command of Mengsk's son (Valerian who dislikes his father and especially his ways) fighting side by side with Raynor's guys, not as opposing political forces but as brother, in arms in the heart of the swarm, Char planet. The dogtag is is homage to Michel Koiter, a Blizzard artist who died of heart failure. Him being from Mar Sara suggest him being with us since either first game or first missions of this game, this being penultimate mission cutscene. I think I got all, let me know if I missed anything important (for Terran perspective)

Just a quick bit of story because I know you were questioning it for awhile, granted I'm only about 25 minutes in so maybe you learned it all by the end, but in short Mengsk used to be a rebel himself, he overthrew the old government and set up his Dominion. He doesn't rule over all humans, there are other nations, but The Dominion is the biggest. He didn't do this for freedom or anything like that, in one of the in-game cutscenes, there's an old recording of him that says "I will rule this sector, or see it burn to ashes around me." Along the way, he'd betray several people, including Kerrigan, the red-haired soldier who is captured by the Zerg and turned into the Queen of Blades. Jim Raynor loved her, and leaves his forces shortly after, forming his own rebellion against Mengsk's rule, Raynor's Raiders. Wings of Liberty follows Jim and his soldiers as they fight against the Dominion, and the resurgent Zerg invasion under the Queen of Blades. It ends with Mengsk's rule being de-stabilized and working with Mengsk's son and a majority of the Dominion military to use an alien device to try and 'cleanse' Kerrigan of the Zerg taint after landing on the Zerg homeworld of Char, breaking the Zerg swarm in the process, as their all a psychic hivemind and Kerrigan was the center of it.

3:50 - Correct, though you'll find conflicting stories of whether Warcraft was to be a Warhammer Fantasy property or Starcraft to be a WH40K, and the other grew out of that. Some awesome correspondences with WH40K, Zerg match the Tyranids, Terrans match the Imperium of Man, and the Protoss are sort of a mix of the Elder and Tau. Sarah Kerrigan is definitely a Vindicare Assassin.

It's pretty much well known by now that what became Starcraft was originally pitched to Games Workshop as a Warhammer 40k RTS. Games Workshop didn't want to work with a small and untested company, at the time, because the gameplay pitch shown to GWS was a modified version of Warcraft set in space. With the pitch failed, Blizzard took what they had and developed it into Starcraft. There was enough development time after the failed pitch for Starcraft to become its own thing, but it definitely is the meme of "we have Warhammer 40k at home". The Terran borrow from the Imperium, but they also borrow from Star Trek and Star Wars, and Starship Troopers, and more. It's less that Starcraft is 40k and more Starcraft is a passion project of nerds that love science fantasy.

Warcraft came first, since the first starcraft was built on the warcraft 2 engine. Also it didn't really involve too much work. Blizzard showed Games Workshop a very simple proof of concept. Once that was rejected Blizzard decided to still make a game. Both Warcraft and Starcraft have a lot of inspiration from WH and WH40K but they really are different

Eh, even in the first game the Terrans and Protoss don't exactly line up as much as one would think. Terrans only share in common with IoM the whole bulky armoured space marine schtick and being human. Protoss are just your typical grey alien combined with ancient psychic elder race (Something that is just a universal trope). Zerg I can see being much closer to tyranids, but that's just because most hivemind space bugs tend to be easy to blur together in themes

FYI the legacy of the void has tonnes of cinematics and it's the best as far as the story goes, plus the epilogue is great.

You need to run both expansions and the epilogue. You will understand Kerrigan's play - and why she murdered 8 billion people in the first game, given through the flashback cutscene - and the part that the Protoss played,, represented by Zeratul, the injured protoss on the custcene you watched.

So a bit of a short backstory on relevant things to these cinematics from SC1: For each of the 6 sub-stories you play a different character, that is actually part of the story, unlike SC2 where you only observer. You are playing in the Koprulu sector and the entire sector is ruled by the Terran Confederacy from their capital planet Tarsonis with its capital city New Gettysburg (they actually use the American confederate flag with a few less stars). For the first campaign "Rebel Yell" you play as a confederate magistrate. You meet up with Jim Raynor, a confederate marshal, and a bit later you meet the Ghost (basically an elite assassin with psychic powers) Kerrigan. As the campaign goes on you find out that the Confederates have built a Psi-Emitter, with which they can attract the Zerg. You and Raynor end up rebelling against the Confederates, joining the Sons of Korhal led by Mengsk. You end up capturing the Psi-Emitter from the confederates, but unbeknownst to you Mengsk decides to send his best agent Kerrigan to sneak the Psi-Emitter into New Gettysburg to tear the confederate capital appart by using the Zerg, which is when Mengsk abandons Kerrigan. Kerrigan then gets turned into the Queen of Blades and is completely under the control of the Overmind, which is basically a hive-mind for the Zerg spanning the entirety of the Koprulu sector, so Kerrigan has no control over her body at all. At the end of SC1 the overmind is destroyed, which leads to the end of the brood wars, and apparently 4 years of peace until the events os SC2.

I think if you wanted the full immersive experience you would of had to experience both the cutscene, ingame mission briefings (as they contain plenty of dialogue between characters and about the tech you use on mission too and about what your doing) and the ingame dialogue/banter between your crew members - between each mission you can go to the canteen, armoury, science deck, bridge and interact with all the character you meet along the way who also give you dialogue into their past and their thoughts on what your doing.
