This movie is great. Another of Kurosawa’s films, Pulse, is one of my all time favorite horror films and I cannot recommend it enough. Has one of the the most unsettling atmospheres and existentially terrifying plots I’ve seen.
Insanely incredible film. I highly recommend another film from this director, Creepy. And Takeshi Miike's "Audition" is excellent too. For more Japanese cinema that is great, Takeshi Kitano's works are great, he's got a solid variety of films under his belt.
@@suburbben1687 Nice to see someone else that likes that film. Almost everyone I know looks only at the third act, but everything that comes before is just as powerfully effective and unnerving.
As much as I love Se7en, it was insane how this film just consistently gave me a growing sense of dread from beginning to end without any of the camera tricks and dark atmospherics of Fincher's film. This was 80% shot during the day, with a slow burn pace and I was still on the edge of my seat. On top of that, the antagonist isn't some creepy genius played by Kevin Spacey, but some scrawny guy who looks like that dude in college who can't get out of bed until 2pm...
Kiyoshi Kurosawa is one of the under the radar directors, like Johnnie To and Ken Loach, that I love recommending to other people. His other films you should check out are Pulse, Charisma, Retribution and Creepy. Also he made an excellent TV show several years ago, Penance, that you should check out. I've heard you talk about the French New Wave before, but you really have to check out the Japanese New Wave, which started a little before the French one did and was done largely inside the Japanese studio system. So many great filmmakers like Kon Ichikawa, Yasuzō Masumura, Nagisa Ōshima, Shōhei Imamura, Masahiro Shinoda and Seijun Suzuki that made some truly great movies. BTW, Bluebeard is an old French folk tale where a wealthy man is in the habit of murdering his wives and the attempts of the present wife to avoid the fate of her predecessors.
SPOILER ALERT I read the story of Bluebeard years ago and in the version I read, he would kill the women if they entered the 'blue room', despite being ordered never to go in to it. I might be overthinking, but I figured Takabe is Bluebeard, and when his wife finds out (therefore entering his blue room) he kills her, which is part of the ritual that makes him the new killer..... or something I'm probably wrong but wanted to see if anyone else drew similar conclusions?
Ahhhh I just watched this last week! I’ve never heard anyone mention this movie! It stuck with me for days afterwards. The editing omg! So excited to see this pop up!
I’m so happy you decided to watch this film!! I just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago, and I’m obsessed, it’s so damn good. I’m a big horror aficionado and don’t scare easily, but something about this film filled me with such dread as it went on- the only other movie I can think of that hit me like that is Ringu. Really powerful filmmaking, I can’t wait to revisit this again in the future!
Im so glad you watched this film. This is one of my favorite japanese films. I get a surreal Psychological horror vibe from this films atmosphere like i do when i play silent hill 2. I feel like the main character could be a silent hill character
When I watched Cure for the first time earlier this year it was the first movie in a while that really had me thinking about it for about a week afterwards. Amazing film!
You should totally watch Cache too, gives me a similar feeling of being overtaken by some dark presence moving in on your life and not getting any easy answers
Loving these movie picks recently with The Fly, Eraserhead and now this gem of a movie. Not to say other picks had been bad, but as a huge horror fan, these reactions have been a great halloween-time treat. 😄
All the psychologist are in on it and in the mesmer cult. Takabes wife is going to the hospital sakuma reccomeded and sakuma is htpnotizing takabe throughout the whole movie and mamiya is mudered by sakuma after sakuma chose the place takabe will kill mamiya sakuma faked his own death and mamiya was chasing after the cult and thats why he snapped he was trying to get recruited or to interact with the cult thats why he was researching the cult and sakuma stole the evidence of the cult before his "death" its an amazing film ive seen this movie 20 times lol it all becomes more clear the more you watch it. 21:35 its pretty remarkable you got this on your first try it took me like six watches to get who the man in the building was
I loved your reactions…and you picked up so many things that I missed and that other reviewers of film have noted. I don’t know what all it is really about either…I would LOVE an interview with the writer/director. Do you know of any either in print or video? I believe there is an interview on the criterion DVD as an extra bonus…but I don’t have access to that. I am glad I found you when I stumbled down this rabbit hole after seeing the film.
First time seeing a video of yours and just subbed. It was really nice seeing how earnestly you appreciated the atmosphere, pacing and cinematography, which really are all absolutely incredible. I was blown away by this movie and still am. I could die happy if I could make a movie that worked so well on every level. To have such an incredibly effective horror movie with no jump scares, no music, no fast editing. Almost the opposite in every regard. Its mind boggling really. Remarkable use of tension . The fact that the movie is so hypnotic while being about hypnosis is the real stroke that makes it genuinely genius. You mentioned it “creeping it into the actual filmmaking” I’m now just hearing Also I don’t want to assume cos I’m not familiar with your work or sense of humor, but in case it wasn’t sarcasm-Bluebeard was not a story of a nice guy who was killed for having a blue beard lol, it’s about a man who kept marrying women and murdering them. I don’t mean to sound condescending if you knew that, I just thought you might like to know if you didn’t. Might add more to your perspective on the movie. Something you touched on a few times that i completely agree with is how it lets us really spend time in the world. Not just in the world, but with the characters which, for all the other brilliant qualities, I think is what really makes Cure a masterpiece at its heart. You seem like you might also really like “memories of murder” from Korea, by the director of Parasite. It’s one of the few movies of its kind in league with Cure imo Looking forward to seeing more of your work, you have great taste. Thanks for the video
Ah, man, I gotta rewatch this one. Cure has quickly become one of my favorite movies; I can hardly stop thinking about it since seeing it in the summer of 2020. Just incredible. Check out Kurosawa's film Retribution for a very similar vibe.
I have it on blue ray just haven't watched it yet and his other movie pulse, now seeing you watching it makes me want to do a double feature, I'll probably comment again and give my opinion on it
Yoooooo no way you actually saw this movie. There isn’t much content related to it on RU-vid but there is one video essay that I highly recommend watching. Once you e seen it you’ll know what I mean
This movie is a masterpiece. Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a god. You absolutely need to watch his film Pulse, has one of the most genuinely terrifying scenes of any movie. Pairs really well with Cure.
