I had a lot of fun watching Terry Gilliam’s 1981 epic fantasy adventure film, TIME BANDITS. Somehow both subversive and wholesome, this film about a group of time-traveling thieves (and/or angels?) was a blast with its immersive production design and an against-type warm fatherly performance by Sean Connery as an Ancient Greek king.

👦🏻 My name is A.J. and this channel is dedicated to my love of film and music. As an aspiring filmmaker, as well as lifelong music fan, I wanted a channel where I could discuss both. Growing up, my screen was lit up with award-winning dramas, campy sci-fi, and dark comedies. And my headphones were full of '70s prog rock, '80s punk, and '90s gangsta rap. My tastes are all over the place, so you never know what I'll react to.
❤️ Thanks for watching, and have a good day.

My favorite part is the Napoleon Bonaparte (Sir Ian Holm) scene. To answer your question: Napoleon Bonaparte wasn't short. It's a myth created by his enemies after Napoleon was defeated. Despite all his faults, Napoleon Bonaparte did a lot of good for France for his time. The Napoleonic Code gave post-revolutionary France its first coherent set of laws, some of which has held up to this very day. In 1812, Napoleon commissioned French scientists to invent a way to keep food good and the canning of food was created. Love or hate him, Napoleon Bonaparte has shaped our world more so than we want to admit. Fun Fact: It was Sir Sean Connery's idea for Agamemnon to do magic tricks for Kevin and suggested that he appear as one of the firefighters near the end of the movie.
@MoviesMusicAJ
@MoviesMusicAJ 2 года назад
That’s brilliant. I thought Connery’s portrayal was warn and heartfelt, especially with moments like the magic trick. They really make you feel the connection, so it hits harder when Kevin gets taken away.

The final battle was predicted at the beginning of the movie. They are fighting on a giant chess board, and all the participants were seen in Kevin's bedroom before the bandits came. Right down to the Lego made evil tower.

First video of yours I’ve seen. I’ll have to check out your Holy Grail video. My four favorite directors are (for different reasons): Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton, and Terry Gilliam. For your next Terry Gilliam movie, I’d recommend Brazil or The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Fidgit in this film was played by Kenny Baker, who also was R2-D2 in the Star Wars movies. He died in 2016.

Thank you for reacting to this movie. It is one of my favorite. Gilliam stated it was part of his Trilogy Brazil, Time Bandits, and Baron Von Munchhausen; representing his adult, childhood, and old age. He also did Doctor Pernassus Imaginarium that has some really interesting behind the scenes story with Heath Ledger and Johnny Depp.

He also did the Dystopic trilogy with Brazil, 12 Monkeys and The Zero Theorem. There is also The Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which form his Trilogy of Americana.

I'm SO glad to see this vid! Loved this film from a young age, and it's a pleasure to see you appreciate it. I don't know if Napoleon ws 5'1" IRL, but I know that he was shorter in stature compared to modern people -- but also so were most of his contemporaries. He was an average-size man for his time, it's just become a modern day historical joke.

In terms of the Robin Hood Story, it wasn't redistribution of wealth for the sake of it. The story goes that King Richard the Lionhearted wanted to go on a crusade (which he did), he had an enormous wool trade, but no money. He taxed the peasantry to starvation, and worked them to the bone. Children were used to make very fine chainmail. Richard left his brother in charge to collect those taxes, and monies in order to finance his crusade. Robin Hood, suspecting that Prince John was overstepping his bounds in order to usurp the throne from Richard thwarts his efforts to collect the money by taking it away from him and giving it back to the peasantry. So in effect it was under King Richard's command that the redistribution of wealth started in the first place. Only in that instance the wealth was going to the ruling class. How come it's OK for the wealth to be redistributed upwards, but never downwards? It puts me at odds with the whole Robin Hood story. Robin Hood is loyal to a fault to King Richard, who is in fact causing the peasantry to suffer.

Creativity is inversely proportional to Budget. (Necessity is the Mother of Invention)
@snarkus63
@snarkus63 2 года назад
(9:20) It's funny that you should mention the budget during that particular scene...originally, it was to feature an actor as the Supreme Being in a flying rig, but it didn't work. In a brilliant moment of last-minute inspiration, Gilliam just had someone cut out a flat piece of wood in the shape of a thin human head which was painted black and hung at the end of a long camera rig; it was filmed coming down the extended hallway with smoke and lighting and a wind machine blowing bits of paper. In post-production, an elderly actor's face was filmed reading the Supreme Being's lines and a stylized animation of his face was super-imposed onto the head shape.

Terry Gilliam makes amazing surreal movies. I adore his work, even the odder gems like Doctor Parnassus. Definitely check out the rest of Gilliam's thematic trilogy - Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Also worth checking out is Brothers Grimm. The CGI is a little wonky at times, but there's so many great faces and who doesn't love a Heath Ledger movie.

well its always been fairly hard to find people on either side of the aisle, that dont believe in the redistribution of money, and social programs of various kinds, to various degrees.. i mean as far as this robin hood scene goes, i watched this movie dozens of times as a kid, and i just found it to be interesting that he and his merry men were portrayed as the thieves they wouldv been most likely to be, rather than glorified as the standard.. of course monty python was good for doing this sort of thing none stop in all their works.. and as a thoughtful kid, i appreciated it very much.. not exactly entertainment for the stupid

What a wonderful - and strangely inspiring - reaction! Yes! This was made on a pittance! (funded by George Harrison). Your film that I saw? It DOES look impressive! For no budget? I really liked it. And I think I told you then: Gilliam has nothing on you! Compare your film with "Fear And Loathing", yours is the more accurate representation of that "head". I can't give you higher praise than that! So many great things you said at the end. I think if they were to make "Time Bandits" today, it would be a series. In fact, it would actually make a good series, now that I think about it! Operator....get me Terry Gilliam! And Disney Plus! :P Gilliam didn't have to grovel too much to make "Time Bandits"; it was produced by George Harrison (as you noticed!). George was the HUGEST Monty Python fan, he had already put up all the money for "Life Of Brian"! He even makes a tiny cameo, see if you can spot him! (Floyd, Zeppelin and Genesis had funded "Holy Grail"! lol) I'm sure Terry had absolutely no problems with George who probably just wrote him a blank check. ("Brazil", however, had HUGE studio problems, legendary ones....but that's another story. That is THE Terry GIlliam movie I'm dying for you to see. "Brazil". That's the movie that got him out of the shadow of Python, and definitely his masterpiece. When I see there's a reaction for "Brazil" I stop what I'm doing, lol). Anyways, whenever you see the "Handmade Films" logo in the beginning of a movie....that's George! Speaking of which: "Life Of Brian" around Xmas time? Brilliant movie programming, sir! If someone asked me my favorite comedies, "Life Of Brian" would be one of the first three titles that would come out of my mouth. You just gave me something to live for, lol. At least for another month! :D Gilliam actually comes more from an animation background. He did the animations for Monty Python; once in a while he'd appear in a sketch, but other than that, he did all the animations that linked all the sketches together. And you know what those animations look like? The "Yellow Submarine" movie!!!! I love that you made that connection! Whenever I think of Gilliam's animation, I think of "Yellow Submarine"! Terry Jones is actually the Python who went from sketch comedy to directing, although even then: Python had tons of filmed bits on their TV show, it was already pretty cinematic, and Jones was the real leader in that area. All of Python were very into history, two of them actually writing books about the middle ages, or doing documentaries about them. I know "Grail" and "Brian" are considered very realistic. My bet is that love of history is what led to "Time Bandits", and my guess it was probably pretty historically accurate with some liberties obviously taken for comedic purposes. Lastly, yeah, I know what you mean about the word "socialism"; which is so funny since the USA is a mixed-economy, and all these half-wits (most of whom don't even know what the word means) don't realize they're part socialist! :P But that's not the reason "Robin Hood" bombed; it bombed because those movies were terrible! To be honest, the best Robin Hood is the original silent one with Douglas Fairbanks Sr. Fantastic, fantastic movie, like all of Fairbanks' films. Awe-inspiring stuff. Great reaction, man!!!! You made me love this movie even more, AJ! I haven't seen this since it came out! I've seen bits and pieces of it, but you really made me want to watch the whole thing from start to finish. But Jesus Christ, so sorry I wrote so much again. lol. Hey, I spread your Funkadelic album reaction on a couple of other pages, hopefully you got some hits.
