The whole story is just a retelling of the Bible. I haven't looked it up but I also think Jennifer is Mother Nature. You're definitely right about them being Adam and Eve. The first clue was his missing rib and then the woman showing up. Javier Bardem is God (written as an egomaniac) and tells them not to touch that one specific thing which Eve tempts Adam to do and when they break it he locks them out of his office at the top of the stairs (heaven). Javier is a "poet" who wrote the Old Testament but now has writer's block and its when he finally writes the New Testament that all the people come back to worship him again. The Cain and Abel bit is where I first started to understand what was going on, then when they burst the pipe and The Great Flood made everyone finally leave is when I really got it. I enjoyed this film, definitely underrated.

This movie is absolutely incredible. I really think it was completely passed over by people. The thing that really blew my mind about this movie, besides the whole overarching metaphor, was how PERFECTLY it captured the *_feeling_* of a dream or nightmare. Dreams are never ever accurately portrayed in film. It's always some stylized "surreal woah dreamy huh?" imagery. It never accurately captures the uncanny specificity of a dream. But this movie, and that um....baby scene in particular, nails it. This is a nightmare rendered about as accurately as can be...outside of literally experiencing it within the confines of your own sleeping mind. I know that's not necessarily the idea behind this movie....but I think it is an element that Aronofsky consciously went for. And holy shit did he succeed.

My interpretation of the baby situation was that Mother gives us life, and this incredibly complex thing that stems an entire being. She gave us (the Poet's fans/the hive mind of humanity) a gift. The nature around us, her taking her time to build and grow, much like plants and nature in real life. The Poet is the god complex, or possibly like the ego of humanity, thinking it knows better than the slow process required. There is obviously a LOT of religious symbolism in the film too, though I am not too privy to that stuff. The scene of mother being beaten by the vast majority who think they know better, and that all Mother is there for is to 'feed' them. Like here in Australia, there are mining companies stealing water resources and killing the land, it's turning into desertification and alas the bushfires we had at the beginning of 2020. Mother Earth is our salvation, but she has grand capacity to take it all away as easily as she can give it to us. this is the first video of yours I've watched , and I gotta say, I really enjoy your content. Keep up the good work and stay safe!
@DonnaBrooks

It's clear, though, that the baby is Jesus. God's Son (HIM's son), yet fully human (mother's son), sacrificed by HIM to a crowd that then ingests him like a macabre Holy Communion, & then HIM says, "We need to forgive them." That's Christian theology. That's also the point at which mother! tells HIM, "You're insane."
@avedic

14:20 gotta pause here to say......it's honestly super fun to watch you guys figure this movie out in real time. All along you keep getting SO CLOSE to figuring out the overarching metaphor at play here. You dance around it constantly.....always getting closer and closer.... Curious to see when it dawns on you what the deeper symbolism is and how it all ties together. Great film....

I have posted this before on reactions to this movie, but I feel it is interesting... The mother was Mother Earth and the people mistreated her just like in real life. The first couple were Adam and Eve. Notice his scar where his rib was removed. Their kids were Cain and Abel. The baby was Jesus. When I saw it in the theater, over half way in, someone about four rows in front of me jumped to his feet and shouted out how he had just figured this out! Somehow, this was not annoying, but glorious! I had figured it out sometime during or right after the Adam and Eve bit, so I was not surprised, but the guy's voice was just SO joyous that he had figured it out, that I could not help but be happy for him!

The HOUSE was Earth. Mother was Mother Nature. They have a special connection but there is a distinct difference that's important. With Nature, our planet would continue to exist, but life would not. We might cause our own extinction, taking much of life on Earth with us, but the planet will remain, even if incapable of sustaining life.

The moral I take from this movie is "When you think about it, God/The Man is really a selfish prick for letting his followers/humanity tear the house/earth apart, because he's too busy standing idle and being worshiped while the woman/mother earth cleans up after them, tries to upkeep the house, but is futile as the followers destroy it while the man can see what's happening and does nothing". TL;DR "If there's a God, and he stands idle to be worshiped by his creations instead of helping them, then wow what an asshole"

I thought it was important that they show a new woman in the house to represent an abuser starting over. What makes the movie so aggressive is the way it casts God as the ultimate abuser. The all powerful being who allows and encourages it all for pride and gratitude of the masses. The way it ties together the patriarchy and Christianity, exposing the true horror and gore of both. Unmatched

Someone explained that the Mother! = mother Earth. The God is represented as the Writer, and the people are ruining the mother earth , and mother asks God to make them stop. God loves his "people"(fans in the movie). So Writer(God) after it all ended, had to restart it all again. I think the fire meant the Sun. Idk but i think that explains the "we don't smoke in here" & "he said it is everyone's house" parts Or he just rewrote his story.

I don't understand why reactors feel obligated to watch stuff in a lighted room. They can dim the light substantially and we'd still see their faces, which is what matters. I wouldn't enjoy watching a movie, especially a very atmospheric movie like Mother!, in these conditions. But your reaction was cool nonetheless. :D Mother! is an underappreciated near-masterpiece.

The doctor at the beginning is supposed to be Adam. Do you remember the scar he had in the ribs? And how, only after that, his wife appears? Also, at the beginning of the movie, the poet says to his wife: "you are my light". Do you know who is the "light bearer"?? But that only my personal conclusions

The broken sink was the flood, the Cain and Abel parallel, the murder of Jesus, the body of Christ consumed by the people, the stone was the Fruit of Knowledge, once they broke it they apologized but they still had to leave. If you look at her bra it was a green leafy design. I see Lawrence as Gaia, Mother Earth, Mother Nature, what you will, and Javier as God.
