13:35 You missed the part where Danny said in the paper "It would had been life if I testified" then he immediately deleted it. So Derek only got the manslaughter charge instead of a murder charge.

It wasn’t first degree because it wasn’t pre-meditated. It was done in the moment. No matter how messed up. Plus Danny wrote that he wouldn’t testify, so they had no direct evidence of how it went down.

Side note: The Stand Your Ground Law is not bullshit.

Just watched it today. An amazing, and impactful movie. Edward Norton and Edward Furlong did amazing storytelling together.

Those 3 guys in the bathroom weren't scared of Danny when he blew smoke in their face. They were scared becuz they know the gang he runs with & his older brother who got out of prison that day

Both of you seemed to miss the fact that the younger brother typed it was manslaughter but it wouldve been murder if he testified...meaning they lied about the event at trial to get Derrick manslaughter. Yall are right, it was murder but no one at trial told what actually happened. Yall even rewinded it but still didnt catch it

I think the truly heartbreaking part is Derek's sins bled into his family enough to confuse his little brother Danny during a very impressionable age. It was already a bit sad to see Derek's road to it through being upset about his father and being used by the Venice beach gang of skinheads, but it was especially sad to see Danny just trying to make sense of Derek and following in his footsteps without even being sure if that's what he wanted. You could tell Danny looks up to Derek a lot in any scenes, he likely just looked up to him so much he stopped thinking for himself.

The kid who shot Danny is more of a cold blooded murderer than anyone. He constantly was the one starting shit throughout the movie. His hate is just as bad as anyone else’s.

13:30 -- Derek was convicted of *voluntary* manslaughter, which means you had the intent to kill. However, voluntary manslaughter is distinguished from *pre-meditated* homicide. Voluntary manslaughter implies you killed in the heat of the moment, without pre-meditation.

when they were arguing about the man slaughter / first degree issue; it seems the guy on the left has no idea the world he's living in while the guy on the right way more in touch with reality... otherwise, you'd typically expect the roles would be the exact opposite as the guy on the right would argue first degree and the guy on the left for man slaughter. just goes to show things are more complex than they seem on first sight.

Try to find statistics on black poeple and how well they do in democratic ran areas compared to republican ran areas. Why are there more black poverty in democratic areas than republican? However, it has saved WAY more lives than it's screwed over. All it means is that we have the right to defend ourselves and our property from criminals who want to take it away. But blaming it on the "stand your ground" law is dumb as fuck. The movie even pointed out that if Danny had testified against his brother, he would have gotten a life sentence. Things aren't as black and white as you're making it sound. Just another perspective, dude. No offense taken, and none intended to be given. Great reaction overall. You have no idea what you're talking about when you say "That's DEFINITELY first degree!". Danny got it wrong when he wrote that and then deleted it in the movie... it was just worded that way because it's a movie and they know it is what sounds the worst and that people aren't going to "stop and think" about it enough while watching to catch it. In reality, the most it would be is second-degree because it was "intentional yet spontaneous"... i.e., he didn't "plan it out for days or weeks in advance". It was an intentional killing, but one which was inspired by emotion and rash reaction to something. Same severity as if you catch your wife sleeping with someone else and end up shooting them, etc. The black dude here doing this reaction obviously didn't care about the plight of the main character. He was essentially laughing when he got killed. You can tell the white dude here is DESPERATE to have black friends... and the black dude here is blatantly indifferent towards white people, living a life of demented perception which makes him see the world as "everyone hates blacks and gives them higher prison sentences, etc". Hell, even his body language says he wants to be nowhere NEAR the white guy sitting next to him! A pretty pathetic sight to see, this emasculated shell of a man placating as hard as he can to win over the respect of his black idol (who hilariously wants nothing to do with him).

The black and white is the past and present. Your white friend is way to liberal for this movie and doesnt appreciate the acting. If you hate the characters its because they are just great at their job.
