I made this video to help myself and any other artist or creative person navigate what seems to be a complicated route to their identity as an artist. Are you a 'filmmaker' - What does this mean? Are you an Artist? Are you an actor or RU-vidr? Is one more qualified than the other based on a title?
I called up 4 RU-vidrs: Casey Neistat, Peter McKinnon, Sam Kolder and Sara Dietschy. As well as 4 multi award winning film directors: Salomon Ligthelm, Tristan Holmes, Zwelethu Radebe and Jolynn Minnaar and posed the offensive statement "Filmmaking is NOT art" to evoke a passion driven response that in turn helped me to understand that there is no separation between a titled film director, RU-vidr or artist, one shouldn't focus on what is or isn't art, its rather about your motive behind creating in the first place and how much you're willing to compromise. BUT the artists in the video say it much better than my description so I hope you get something meaningful out of it Bru!

If I shout at you, I'll evoke an emotion, but that isn't art. I think a more interesting question about a work is 'is it successful or not?'. Whether something is art seems to be almost a redundant question imo.

You're job as an artist is to evoke emotion, with whatever your chosen medium. When you can do that, it is generally agreed that it's elevated to art. If it's good or bad is subjective, and as a result irrelevant to whether or not it's art. A conversation that's been going on for thousands of years, and I imagine will continue.

Awesome video, Dan! Love the variety of perspectives and the creative editing. I think you're on to something that traditional media and youtube will eventually blend into something new. And congrats on the new opportunity! If Discovery+ is still looking for more creators, I'd love to get involved in some way. IMO filmmaking is the godfather of art. It includes almost every element of the arts. From writing, acting, score to color grading all is art. Every frame of a film is like wallpaper/painting.

I love the point Salomon made about "compromise", because it's so true. Any aspect of what you do that relies on commercial appeal does start to blur that line between art and commerce. So glad someone made a video about this sort of thing, I've been wracking my brain forever as a kid who grew up on RU-vid and is now in the filmmaking space.

Hey Dan! I need to get these words out of my head before I forget them. Never has a youtube video drawn me to watch, and then decide to get a note pad & pen and watch again. Until the start of the year and partially still now I wouldn't say I was creative. Saying that I'm not a videographer - but i heavily follow yourself, Pete McKinnon and Casey. Won't lie it started with Casey. I was late to the RU-vid world - but it has carried me through this year. Helps more that SA is my second home being that my mum retired down there. I'm photographer but one thing I always try to do is stay true to my own beliefs and tell the story in front of me. Thank you again for this video - its the perfect video to take us into 2021. I just hope by that odd chance you do get a chance to this comment and I'm waffling on! JC

The word " COMPROMISE " really stuck to me. It's like the painfull truth. As a filmaker you create films that tell/narrate a story, the way you do so is For YOU To Chose, so the real question is... " HOW WILL YOU/I DO IT ? ".how will i tell this story? We ask ourself this question because, at the begining of every story there is an idea, which isn’t real, because IT STARTS IN YOUR HEAD. At this point, the story or idea is imaginary and TO BE ABLE TO SHARE IT, you must let it out of your head,by one way or another; as A Film, A Painting, An Animation, whatever it is. THAT IS WHERE YOU ARE CONFRONTED WITH " COMPROMISE ". To this compromise people either don't see it (due to experiance for ex. ) and some people are completely punched in the face, but still manage to push through but some (me) are RKO-ed to doom ( and either don't start or finish telling their story) as the reality does not meet their imagination/fantasy that was in their head. To this, I believe is a solution, to ask yourself "What Works?" beacause that is compromise . The expedient acceptance of standards that are lower than is desirable. - Google definitions AND yet this video is beautifull !!!! thank you for reading to this point I really appreciate it!!

The all too mediocre/common question. Is my creative profession an Art form? As a full time Artist as well as Art Degree Student; I think to the average Joe that question evokes a lot of biases, uncertainty or even emotion. But to the folks who's established in a creative/art field, the question shouldn't be queried as from day one. You are taught and you pretty much learned from lecturers or other colleagues that it's(let's say film making or videography) is an Art form. Why? As Art is by definition, the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination. Screw all the other hippy dippy terms and what not, we don't need to query what is/not art in 2020 anymore. And for God's sake, never listen to a random fucker who doesn't have a degree/isn't in an Art profession in regards to anything around Art terminology or what is/not Art. We're all accustomed to the related sayings of 'Art is random, mysterious and beyond our grasps' or 'to create art is an art form on its own'. You know what I mean. I think it's all horse shit. In fact, I think it degrades the Arts, as it derails the true process/perception of the ideation/creation of the deliverables of art mediums. As we don't randomly just like, pull a fucking design out of our arse. Or at least the idea of it per say. Those involved in the creation of art mediums firstly conceptualize/ideate for hours if not days, before even the final product can be worked on. Then the planning starts, and following is the technical part which is mostly quite easily(as our skills develop futher and futher after each project, and the pros have done a lot). But yeah, it's a long and can be frustrating process which took thousands of hours to become accustomed to/learn. But yeah. TL:DR in summary: Stop querying what is/not art. Fix your perception of art by doing a quick Google definition search and using logic to apply it on other art mediums. It's simple. And also, artists aren't stoners. So please stop with the voodoo hippy dippy remarks and sayings on art topics. But yeah boet, nice video bra. I'm just another South African Lanie out of Pretoria. I think filmmaking is a medium rather than an art itself. You can achieve art with filmmaking, but not all filmmaking is art. Sometimes it's just entertainment, which is not bad. It depends on the intention the creator puts into his product.

I posted this comment to point out that that the question in the video is stupid to being with, filmmaking is obviously art. But that is not a testament to it being prestigious or worthwhile. Calling filmmaking art is often used to make appear more legitimate and important for those who consume it and produce it, and that is false way of thinking.

Some pretentious people call themselves artists and think they are saving the world with their art, but in reality they are just another wierdo on deviantart. What some people think when asking "is filmmaking art" is along the lines of "is it important and valuable enough to qualify as art and is watching a Disney movie equivalent to going to a gallery"
