Filtering / Cleaning WVO Waste Vegetable Oil at home: Want to filter waste vegetable oil very easily? Want to clean WVO without expensive tools or fancy equipment?
Filter waste vegetable oil very easily with the Cubie Method - probably the simplest method of cleaning WVO there is. Separate clean from dirty oil easily.
Virtually no costs or equipment involved.
If you collect your WVO in Cubies (square, plastic containers) you really must watch this video.. Ideal for veg oil motoring or for those needing to clean veg oil ready for biodiesel.

awesome! a cubie is lost and turned into waste everytime you do this!! WHAT A GENIUS!!

I would make several holes at different depths and put small taps, and open the one with the best level, so I don't have to throw away the container.

I’ve been doing this for 15 years or so and saved about $80’000 in fuel but if I used this method I would be spending every waking moment cleaning oil. It would be fine if you are using 20-30 litres a week. It’s a great video by the way, thanks for posting it. I clean 1000 litres at a time by first screening it into a half dozen 200 litre drums and letting in settle in them for at least a month but longer is better. Then I draw it out of the drums with a spear pickup leaving the bottom 150 mm. That gets pumped into another 1000 holding tank and left to sit again and the sludge drained off that before pumping it through a 5 micron filter into the 1000 litre storage tank. Just before it goes into my car it goes through another filter. If you are careful with your cleaning you can save a lot of money so it is worth a bit of an investment. My system is a mishmash I have developed over the years and it’s ugly but only owes me about $400. If you aren’t careful it can COST at lot so either commit or don’t waste your time.

@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
I've often been asked why I don't re-use the cubies and the answer is simple... I have too many. I want rid of the things in truth : ) There's a video on dealing with waste which includes the cubie if you're interested. As for drill size, it doesn't really matter. Small. That's good enough. But 2, 3 or 4mm will work. However if the hole is too small, you'll find it will quickly clog... so it becomes a case of learning as you go. Hope this helps.
@ronyerke9250
@ronyerke9250 6 лет назад
If you don't want your oil to "shoot across the room", try taking a circular piece of one of your empty cubies and running your drill through that before using it to drill into a full cubie. I suppose if you just drilled a top from an empty cubie, you could further reduce splash mess if the threaded part faced the full cubie. Or does the shooting wait until after the drill is removed? Alternatively, drilling the first hole near the top and going downward by increments might also be a less messy way to go.

my oil is almost black even after settling for a week. the oil is terribly dirty. I keep getting a huge amount of glycerol at the end (around 60%) whys this?

Black? And it's veg oil? I really think you need to look at another supplier. This sounds very dirty to me. I wouldn't you it. As for glycerol, sounds like you're making biodiesel there. Personally I've toyed with it, but it was a long time ago. Sorry I don't think I can help you on that one. Best of luck.

Is there a need to filter shop bought oils like sunflower and rapeseed or just WVO?
@vogman
@vogman 7 лет назад
Hi Kaan. No need to filter shop bought as they are perfect as they are. Actually they're even better to be honest. They're less viscous, fat, debris and water free. Basically they're ready to go. WVO on the other hand, even the best tends to be a little thicker (more viscous) and contain some debris. The worst isn't even worth trying to filter. Hope this helps. Geoff
@TobiasLjungvall
@TobiasLjungvall 5 лет назад
Thanks for this and your other helpful videos. I guess this cubie method won't rid the WVO of surface scum? Or perhaps the scum exerts so little pressure, and the holes are so small, that very little of it will seep out?
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
The trick is to never allow the surface scum into your filtered oil. Have a look at my multi settling tank video to see what I mean. Clean oil is drawn from the bottom and never the top : )
@TobiasLjungvall
@TobiasLjungvall 5 лет назад
@@vogman Yeah, I saw it with the clever floater only drawing WVO below the surfade scum. But with the cubies you would have to monitor the emptying process and stop it before the scum reaches the holes, and maybe that is a bit time-consuming? Or would you just trust sock filters to catch the scum?
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
Yes mate, with the cubies you have to manually watch. But you quickly get an idea how long it take... and if you empty into a settling tank, it doesn't matter if you do get surface scum included. Whilst this would not be ideal, the tank itself should be set up to not remove the surface layer : )
@TobiasLjungvall
@TobiasLjungvall 5 лет назад
@@vogman Finally drilled one of the cubies. Lots of water came out. So I carefully plugged that hole with a screw and drilled another one further up. Really viscous stuff coming out, it's going extremely slow, so I drilled an additional three holes. Still moving very slow. Maybe because I haven't allowed the fats to settle properly? Cubies are in the garage and most of the time the temperature there has been very low.

@vogman
@vogman 9 лет назад
Oli Emmett Hi Oli. Water in diesel alone can lead to costly repairs and there's plenty of that in WVO. I've always maintained I'm no mechanic, but I do know a few, and I've heard their nightmare stories of seized up engines, blocked fuel pumps and the like. For me it's a no-brainer. Filtering WVO in THIS way is EASY and for the most part cost free. So why take the risk? Hope this helps my friend.
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter
i noticed this is a recommended method, just curious is this a good idea? why not just use a oil pump dip the cable in to required depth and suck out the oil.
@vogman
@vogman 6 лет назад
Hi Grimshaw. When you say "recommended" do you mean by me or someone else? That obviously makes a difference... I'm biased : ) I am a perfectionist and I also strive to find the EASIEST method. This two factors create havoc for me. However, settling is so incredibly easy and amazingly efficient. Problems begin, unfortunately, the very moment you interfere with the process. Break the surface, no matter how gently, and you'll see cloudy gunge from the surface (there's always a thin scum, even when you can't see it) mix with the beautiful clean oil. And then there's current - you're so careful but it stirs just the tiniest bit, like a gnat's fart, and there's a cloud of gunk rising from the bottom. Engage a pump and the current becomes stronger. At least, this has been my personal experience. But let it all settle and poke a SMALL hole a inch or so above the crud and let it trickle out and yes, there's still a tiny cloud, but it's less than an inch and out comes the clean stuff. I'm a bit of a geek when it comes the settling. I just love it! Hope this helps. Geoff

@vogman
@vogman 4 года назад
Hi Phill. I've never known it go completely solid yet. It goes very thick and times, but not solid. This technique relies on the thicker stuff sinking to the bottom and the clean runny stuff rising. It works as well : )

@vogman 8 лет назад
+Backyard Randoms Thanks for your question. I've not tried this on WMO but I would think that settling (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jwco2uey4Kg.html) would work, yes. I can't imagine many folks having WMO in cubies, but the principle behind this technique should work ; ) I suppose the main issues with WMO are water and metal debris, and these certainly would sink to the bottom given time. If there's scum on the surface, avoid that... a settling tank (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g6s3VqkXGcI.html) would do the trick nicely. Depending on what you want to use the WMO for, it might be worth pouring the finished content through a filter sock (whatever micron you wish) but I think the settling technique would certainly remove the vast bulk of unwanted content. If you give it a go, please drop me a line and let me know how you get on. I'd be pleased to hear about it.
@sverduijn1

Sorry to say but this seems easy but you're wasting alot of plastic containers this way... If you have a drill already then use a drill pump. Those are just 10usd or something you can attach it to your drill and pump out the oil. It's better to put the oil in a way bigger container. Try to find an old aqarium. Maybe put a waterproof led strip strip inside. Then you can really see where the clear oil is. For the filtering I would recommend to filter in more layers. Maybe this works for you but for people who get their oil more dirty it will clog up the fine micron filter way too fast. So on top of the fine filter you have to put 10, 20, 50 micron filters and on top of that some old jeans and then some bed linnen, towels or tshirts. This way the filters that you have to pay for will last longer. And wherever you do the filtering make sure to cover all the walls and floor with cardboard, plastic etc because accidents WILL occur lol :)
@vogman
@vogman 7 лет назад
It's a nice idea and in many ways is the basis of my settling tank designs. The issue of wasting plastic doesn't really come into play here as whether we poke a hole in them or just empty them, we're still left with empty containers that no one wants : ) I do actually encourage folks clean out the cubies and put the plastic into recycling. It's in another video about dealing with the leftovers. When settling is done properly, as with the multi-tank method, no filters are required at all... now that's good filtering. Thanks for your good intentions. Best wishes Geoff

In freezing conditions veg oil looks a little like very dirty butter. But thankfully it's easy to stop it freezing in storage barrels. I use a fish aquarium heater. These don't use much electricity and don't generate a lot of heat, but it's room temperature heat which is perfect for veg oil : )

In part yes. If you look at my other videos you'll see a multi-tank settling set up. That's the one I use. This video is an illustration of the principle of settling. It shows how just doing nothing allows gravity to weed out most of the debris, fats and water. But I'd still encourage the use of a good filter sock afterwards.
