Great videos... a little confused here. Are you recommending using the spectrum filter with the ambient filter on the Keldan? I use an A7R3 so if I attach a spectrum filter it will be there for the whole dive, regardless whether I am shooting at shallow or deep depth. Thank you so much.

Vanessa...first of all...thank you for ALL of you videos...they are very helpful. Secondly, I am using an Olympus TG-6 with an Olympus housing. It has a 52mm lens attachment and I have a 52mm Backscatter wide angle dome lens. It is a wet lens. For the red filter, I attach the red filter to the housing and then the lens to the filter. It is essentially doing the same thing as using a filter sheet. Just another work around I thought I would share. Again, thank you for all your hard work giving us beginners all these fantastic tips!

I've been binging your videos trying to learn the ropes of this stuff. Thanks for all the great content! Quick question... You mentioned the "mixed light" problem when manually white balancing and using lights. If using a GoPro and setting the wb to 6500 for example (same kelvin rating as my lights), will I still have that problem? If I'm understanding the video correctly, I think the answer to that question is yes?

Fantastic content, subbed. Quick question. Would you recommend combining a red filter and video lights for a GoPro at all since these cameras don’t allow for manual white balance correction underwater? Perhaps it’d be best to only use video lights?

Thank you once again BTM! I have a question. Normally I would wait for the most excellent Q&A episode but I have an upcoming trip with a new rig. These are vacation dives in Cozumel. First dive 100 max, then plenty of time at 60. Second dive, 40 to 60. Love your support for the Keldan. Optics is where it is at. It seems my choice would be the -4 stop spectrum. My lens will be a lumix 12-35 . I believe it has a fixed aperture at 2.6. Does this seem like a good fit? Also do you know at what depth I will lose the redness from the filter? I would be good if say by 8 meters the filter “ normalized”. I used to have a flip, but now with a dome I am locked in. Thank you so much. Your venture is tremendous and I look forward to supporting it. How about online work shops where you give us fledglings projects and you grade an critique. Or something as such. Thank you

Thanks. always informative. If using ambient filters on your lights, and a red filter on your lens, why would you do your manual WB before turning your lights on? Seems like it would be better to have the lights on when doing the WB.

I use a dome port and cannot change the filter during the dive. Therefore I'm looking for the best "allrounder" and want to do the rest in post production. In my case, would you recommend a Spectrum Filter SF -2 (2-15 meters) or an SF-4 (6 to 20 meters)? I tend to the SF4 but 4 stops are quite a lot.

If you have ambient light filters or the right kelvin value for your strobes. But for stills you can then leave the red filter out, because you have the whole raw data to correct. It is not like compressed video

Most useful, watchable, weirdly entertaining how-to's on the interwebs. Grateful! Question: I'm using iPhone and GoPro, so limited ability to white balance. In order to avoid mixed light, use a blue filter on the light. BUT, doesn't this mean there's no red data for post production? I'd love help with this and thanks again for your amazing work.

Hey Vanessa, for the great tip... just curious in your video you mention that a red filter should be used for depth below 3 m. and the shade of red should depend on the depth, is there a depth range for the respective shade of red to use? eg. 3-15m 1 shade, 15-30m darker shade. In your white balance video, you also did mention that if you are using a white slate for custom white balance that we need to adjust the exposure, with the filter does that still apply because the red filter technically step down for you automatically? and will white balancing using a grey slate work the same way with filters?
@dylanslater83

Does a red filter make a lot of difference over just doing a manual white balance in the GH5? I find mine very accurate underwater but I'm always open to make it even better.

I use my uw rig without red filter but normally set my white balance to same temp as video lights (5600k) but also dial in a slight magenta tint to compensate. This works great with the lights until I get super close to the subject, then I get that reddish cast. If I got the ambient light filters WITHOUT using a red filter, would they still work like white light and stop that red cast? Reason I'm so against red filters is I switch btwn photo (with strobes) and video (with lights) multiple times on every dive. Thanks in advance.

You are amazing thank you so so much for your videos! I fell behind watching them due to nursing school (my brain couldn't learn anything new outside of nursing haha) I can't wait to catch up on your videos! I noticed you wear freediving fins (you mentioned them in an older video) Do they give you a good amount of power*? (you know since we have all this dive gear on. I keep thinking the fins will barely move us underwater) I was thinking about trying them out... Also, if you haven't done so already, a video on what program you use and how you go about color correcting (*amateurish*) footage -would be epic!

I love the freediving fins... work superwell for me. I use Adobe PRemiere Pro to edit & color correct. But there is alwayd DaVinci Resolve (free version e.g. that is supercool - plenty of tutorials online on that). But we will do a color grading Episode in the near future!!! :)

I ordered Black Molly 2600 (2 lights) for my Go Pro 9 and they were shipped out yesterday. After watching your video about the blue light, I called the Big Blue and I will exchange those lights for AL2600XWPB (they have built in blue lights). Big Blue does not offer ambient light filter for Black Molly 2600, so I need to exchange the actual lights. I think I have made the right decision about exchanging the light. Great video! We notice Vanessa uses the GH5 and shows the camera and the Panasonic 7-14 mm f/4 Lumix G Vario a micro 4:3 lens in this episode. We are about to purchase the GHG with this lens for use for both wide angle stills and video. We have had some people tell us though that they wouldn’t recommend this lens for video..... and rather we should use 14-42 MKII kit lens for underwater video, so we are getting a bit baffled. Could you provide some advice on this? Also, do you know if there is anyone that makes ambient light filters for strobes? Given we cannot remove the spectrum filter on this lens underwater, we thought if we had ambient light filters for our strobes we could then swap from shooting video across to shooting wide angle stills on the same dive. Appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Thanks a lot Vanessa! Great video! Quick question, if you film in RAW (Blackmagic cc4k or zcam E2 (or red...)) Do you still need the red/magenta filter on the lens? (Ok for the blue filter on the lights this is normal)
@ReefPatrol
@ReefPatrol 4 года назад
it is not as import, but also here the same applies.. if your sensor doesn't capture red... it's not there.. also with RAW ;) but it will defently be better than compressed files. Anyhow, some cameras, e.g. Z Cam, Sony have issues with WB, so using a RED FILTER will defently help with the manual white balance.

Once again great video. Learning a lot here. Question. Obviously you guys are using keldan lights and you are able to have a blue filter. I use light and motion sola 2000 lights. Do you know of anyone who makes blue filters for those, or can you suggest something how to make them myself. Also what color light filters would you be using, when using magenta camera filter (green water, I dive in northeast Atlantic so have to ask :-))?
@ReefPatrol
@ReefPatrol 4 года назад
The "Green" Version of Keldanlights for Green Water: keldanlights.com/products/filters/filters-for-video-lights/ambient-filter-af-6-bg.html For the SOLA I actually have no idea, but I must say with 2000lm if you add a filter your will block too much light anyhow. You do need more powerful lights, otherwise you wont have the benifit of using lights :( so in your case you just gonna have to live with a bit too red footage, you can always take out a bit of RED in post, it will never work like with the filters, but as they are not so powerful, you should be more or less fine.

So running the -2 stop filter with the 12-35mm and the -1.5 stop filter with 8mm fisheye on the Gh5 filming 4K 24p it is almost impossible to get good exposure without pushing iso above 1600 which is about the limit of the Gh5. Is it time to invest in the gh5s to maintain appropriate aperature valies such as f8? I’m also running 2 keldan 4x with ambient filters but they are mostly useless for wide angle shots. I would also like to be able to film in 60p again to give those slow cinematic shots. I know you shoot with a Gh5 and am curious of your thoughts
@BehindtheMask
@BehindtheMask 4 года назад
Vanessa actually shoots with 2x 8X so more power there. Also around F4, becuase witht the M4/3 camera thats a fullframe equivalent of F8 and usually enough UW. Also try to get closer to your subject, so that you use your full light power! Other than that, clearer water and shallower :) GH5 really has it's limit at 1600ISO the GH5s is a lot better in low light.

@@ReefPatrol like you said in other replies if the red light is not there you can't make it. Below 20m there is very few to none red light left and that is only in the parts of the world with excellent visibility. The only thing you 'll make by adding the filter that deep is that very ugly red colour noise soonest you try to white balance on ambient. Stronger lights? why? The deeper you go the biggest the effect of your lights because it is darker. In the shallow you have the sun to compete with and you need powerful lights. Anyway, the effect of your lights doesn't go further than 2 meters away from the source.

@BehindtheMask
@BehindtheMask 4 года назад

Doesn't it make sense to also use the red filter together with video lights as long as the video lights have an ambient light filter on them to solve the mixed light problem?

if only use video light with ambient light filter, and the camera without Red filter, during the post production, is it any red will be capture there?

How would you white balance for a indoor competition pool? My video of swimmers is coming out with a strong bluish-green.

At the moment im also using ambient light filters for my video lights (i built it myself) and im looking to upgrade the lights. Keldan is probably too expensive.. i found lights that have tri color (white red blue) and you can use white and blue together. Would you still need an ambient light filter? 🤔 im unsure on one hand youd make the color temperature of the light very cool so maybe no ambient light filter is needed. On the other hand youre not removing the red light spectrum.. probably will build an ambient light filter myself later on just curious if i need to 😅

I don't really know the brand, so dificult to say, as I havent tested. But I am assuming, that the Blue LED will be too cool and not strong enough. Keldan sure... expensive.. but they will outlive mutiple camera setups ;) good investion! One o fthe upcoming episodes will be Video Lights... stay tuned :)

@@ReefPatrol ok great :D what i meant was the light im looking at has thre sets of leds UV Red and white. youre right the blue light isnt too bright (~600 lumens) but the white light is 15000 lumens so if you combine these two you have a cool but very bright light...
@ReefPatrol

@@simon1234567ful perhaps it will work, no idea :) try it out and let us know :) But I am assuming it wont be the color temp of ambient light... it will be some sort of 450nm blue wavelength.

What about the mixed lights problem if you are not using Keldan lights? You have to “invent” a blue filter for your lights if they are not ready for mounting a filter? Something to do with the mixed lights if you do not use blue filters for your lights? Thanks.
@ReefPatrol
@ReefPatrol 4 года назад
Well you will need to live with a bit too red oversatureted image. there is no other way. this is always the issue with mixed light. some lights you can swap the LED module to a more cyan colored LED. that is possible too (e.g. Keldan 8M) .
@ramonc.214

Reef, will you get acceptable results by white balancing with the mixed lights? Maybe using a translucent cap instead a white card, to avoid the reflections of the artificial light in a close card.

@@ReefPatrol can I ask you why not? It would make perfect sense to me... One would need to use a matt WB sheet to avoid reflections, but by logic it should work

Hi, just to confirm: if i'm using go pro at more than 3m depth with ambient light, I need to use a red filter for better color?

Yes. I use Flip (they are a brand name) filters and have a GoPro filter set that attaches to the lens. Under 3m = no filter, then I use the appropriate filter for each depth range.

@@rogemarbravo8418 NO! Use the red filter in tropical water. Also, you may want to switch off of super wide. It distorts underwater. I'm a true amateur but I have some experience, and several dives, with a GoPro at depths usually around 10 to 15 meters in tropical water (Bahamas, Tahiti, etc)

no it is a different color temp. blue light for fluorescence is around 450nm, this is a lot cooler and bluer than ambient light.
