Am I the only person who thinks the 3rd & 11 Steve Smith play is the most unsung, underrated, critical play of the Giants game winning drive?
@onemorecor
@onemorecor 3 года назад
I think the same
@jamesm3471
@jamesm3471 3 года назад
My reasoning: The Helmet Catch, is awesome, but also overrated. It’s 3rd and 5, Roughly midfield. If Tyree can’t make the catch, it’s 4 and 5. If Steve doesn’t make the play on the 3&11, best case it’s 4th and 3, while worst case it’s 4&11, going up against one of the greatest situational defenses in NFL history in the 2007 Pats, who have been operating very successfully all year on the bend-don’t-break idea of stopping teams cold in the red zone. No helmet catch, and the Giants still have half the field spreading out the NE defense, and they need 5 yards, but if Smith doesn’t make that play, that same NE defense only has to defend roughly 20 yards of field, knowing that the Giants will be going for the sidelines or the Endzone. Smith’s play prevented all that, but hardly gets a mention.

One of the most amazing things to me is that Michael Strahan planned to retire after the 2006 season, already a 14 year veteran in the franchise, but decided to come back for ONE more year. Who'd have thought his final year would give him his first and only Superbowl win against the undefeated evil empire. Strahan truly went out a champion. What an incredible way to conclude his NFL playing career. Strahan, Manning, Burress, Tyree, and everyone else who players were all Dragon Slayers this game.

I laugh when people call this game boring. They say how there was barely any scoring. I dont know how people weren't on the edge of their seat every time the Patriots had the ball because of the potential for them to blow the game open at any time. Or when the Giants had the ball it was like is Eli going to start throwing picks, and he never did. The potential of what could happen on the next play made this game so interesting.

@@silverguard8105 so True! I don't understand how in any sport, that some people consider the most exciting games to be the ones with the most points scored! It's utterly ridiculous. So many underrated moments that are overlooked but so crucial on that final drive: Toomer's clutch catches in the dirt. Jacobs somehow picking up that 4th and 1 when the entire team and region of New England knew he was running the ball. Eli somehow holding on to the ball after the attempted strip/tackle by Thomas @3:51 Smith's tightrope walk on 3rd and 11 to get the 1st. Jacobs sliding over to pick up an untouched Harrison off the edge so Eli can get the clean fade pass off to Burress. The Helmet Catch is obviously an all-timer and remembered as such, but the plays above laid the foundation of the G-Men winning that game.

I'll never get tired of watching this video. Before Superbowl 42, Plaxico Burress predicted a NY Giants 23 - 17 win over The Mighty 17 - 0 Patriots. When Tom Brady heard Burress' prediction, Brady laughed "HAH. We're ONLY going to score 17 points on 'em". And especially when the Patriots scored to take the lead 14 - 10 with 2:42 left on the clock. Joe Buck describing "a methodical drive put together by the game's BEST... Tom Brady (sigh)". But when David Tyree caught that desperation pass with 1:00 left in regulation. Troy Aikman; shocked, had no choice but to announce "OH MY GOD!!! This ball's thrown and Tyree just goes up for it like a basketball player. And Harrison trying to knock knock it down!". And the piece de resistance. "Manning, lobs it. BURRESS... ALONE!!! Touchdown, New York!!!" - Joe Buck.

Giants defense did a hell of a job keeping the Pat's in check. Manning got it done when it counted clutch in 4th quarter. Randy Moss the most dangerous player on the field. If Samuel had been a Giants receiver making the same leap on the same ball, everyone would be criticizing Manning for not giving him a chance to catch it. The ball was too high and out and if he got his hands on it, no way he comes down in-bounds with the momentum and angle of his jump. Samuel did well to even touch that ball. It was an amazing feat of athleticism on his part and a good job on Manning's to put the ball where it could not be intercepted. I hate people trying to reduce two good players' efforts on this play to failures, Samuel's failure to catch a ball he never had a chance, and Manning's alleged luck that the defense failed to make an impossible play.

Dude, there are literally images showing and articles discussing how guys like Brady and Wilfork wore both decals (Wilfork especially, as he played with Taylor when they both played for the Miami Hurricanes). Additionally, the 91 decal was a tribute to a PATRIOTS defensive end who died saving his girlfriend after getting into a jet ski accident. Now with that being said, I'm sure they could've easily just slapped on the 21 for this game along with the 91, but they didn't for whatever reason, just keep note that they were honoring their own fallen teammate with that 91 and that they, in fact, DID wear both numbers at times. Ouch! 18 wins and 1 giant loss! That’s really a giant heartbreak if you’re a patriots fan. The only nfl team that’s undefeated are the 1972 Miami dolphins! If a loss sits with one of us, it is what it is. All there is is good sportsmanship and thats it, nobody’s perfect.

I remember EXACTLY where I was at, I was in Camp Warhorse in Iraq. I remember people going off at the Giants win, I also remember my homeboy from Boston 🤢 to his stomach.

Who knew that Brady would still win 7 and Manning would only win 1 more. Brady is the GOAT

@@obnoxious3388 I'd rather lose 4 superbowls in a row like the Bills than blow a chance at a perfect season against a Wildcard team

I was 18 at the time. It was a rainy, dreary day in southern CA, where I was watching this game with some friends in a house whose owners I hardly knew. The game went on through the late afternoon. We ate some pasta that nobody really took the time to prepare. The guy caught the football on his head, and Plaxico redeemed himself with a game winning TD catch. I'll never forget it.
