Terrible news folks: the Audi R8 is no more. Well, almost. Audi has announced it’ll stop building its V10 supercar in late 2023 and its replacement will be an all-electric e-Tron. Goodbye to 5.2-litre howl…
Audi’s goodbye present to itself is the R8 GT: a rear-wheel drive limited edition with a bit less weight, a bit more power and a family value pack of carbon fibre aero parts. It can teach you how to drift, but does that mean it’s the most fun to drive Audi ever? Or does that title belong to the first supercar ever to wear the four rings - the 4.2-litre V8 R8 complete with manual gearbox and a mere 414bhp?

@@Yada_690 Yes it is. Very little digital buttons or haptic feedback. No screens everywhere and the one that’s there can be switched off etc, all analog, literally the definition of timeless.

Ending is perfection. Hit it on the head. Amazing how great the first gen R8 looked and drove with the manual compared to the new overstyled one. No question I would have the original with a manual

I really like it also, the only issue is it's not a super fast car for a 400hp 2 seater, especially compared to more recent cars. For the same price or less, a newer F Type R sounds way better, has around 150 more hp, is a lot faster, and also looks very good (though it doesn't have the same looks or engine in the rear!).

@@iSOBigD I'd argue it didn't want to be a supercar I prefer the 1st gen because it's more understated, you attract less attention around town.. and I think it's still faster than what I can handle - going to the track is (very) expensive and... Well, it's an extra activity. You still have to drive one the road, too.

Owned both. Gen 1 was sublime with manual but disappointingly slow and as stated really tired interior. Gen 2 way faster, red lines at 8750rpm, but missing the beautiful gated shifter

First gen looks so executive and classy. You can totally still see tony stark walking out in suits and ties to his red carpet event. The generation after just looked like any other supercar. Sporty, angular with wings and canards. And the gated manual. Perfection. 👌🏻

@@jotabarberaIV Interesting thought, who taught you that though?, It builds pressure for sure, and also things take longer than I expect but I've also achieved everything I've set out to do, the R8 is the final one, so theres a confidence in competence that comes with the track record even in the face of obstacles. Edit: I just read your message again your first 3 words were "aren't you afraid" I actually think thats a mindset difference, fear based decision making. Fear never entered the equation both of failing to get the R8 or commenting on youtube where people are likely to doubt anyone can own these kinds of cars. Didn't intend to psycho-analyse but I find things like this interesting. You better get one too! haha

Got mine a couple of months ago. Rtronic is also great and quirky, love mine. Every drive is an event. Just unplug the vacuum lines for the exhaust valves. Go for it, you won't be sorry.

@@Sheldon42 Ahh nicee congrats!, Thats the biggest decision left to make, R Tronic or Manual, I currently have a Manual TT so i'm inclined to continue the manual journey before the electric revolution but I live in london area so traffic isn't fun either. And yeah the closed valves muffle so much sound, I did notice the Valvetronic F1 exhaust which can be switched on demand aswell, so thinking about that!

Gen 1 V8 all day long for me. A pure drivers car and on British B roads..that wonderful chassis and 420 BHP is all you will ever need. I will never sell mine

This new technology of the seven settings of, basically traction control, is pretty awesome!!! I hope this tech gets introduced to cheaper cars, because being able to adjust the amount on traction control your tires are receiving, in a seven click adjustment period, is awesome!

I think what part of the significance of the old R8 is that it offered super car performance for a price that was pretty low comparted to similarly specc'd cars - I recall the MSRP for Gen 1 was 101,000 euros

I felt the same about my 2008MY until I dropped it in for a service in 2016 and got the bill for $25,000. Wasn’t long until I was in a brand new V10, be lovely to blend aspects of each car into the final model

Ollie is an entertaining presenter, and i agree with his opinion about the R8. Especially looking at the R8s from the back, the new one has totally lost the design touches of the first gen, although i also agree on the headlights, i might prefer newer headlights over the older ones. Btw, i see that you guys mentioned Ken Block in the description, considering his recent passing, will there be a tribute on here?

@@3storiesUp I get that, but i don't think he's that bad, i enjoyed his car test videos and i don't mind seeing him do more reviews like this. Of course i am not comparing current TG to the OG trio, nothing will ever top that, but considering the many cringe presenters TG has had over the years, i like this Ollie more than the other Ollie, they both seem to have a weird way of walking, where this Ollie tiptoes and the other one walks like a cowboy in leather chaps, but i think they're both fine. I like Chris Harris of course, but also Jack Rix, and honestly i haven't watched an actual TG in ages, i had almost forgotten about Paddy and ... what's his name.

The original R8 is truly timeless. It still looks brand new. Always felt saddened by the fact they dropped the V8 version. Woulda been amazing if they released a supercharged version at a point. Still a car I hope to own someday.

The original was styled different to any other car with clean lines. The new one has the Audi cooperate front end like any other Audi and parts stuck on it from an RS3. It’s like they didn’t know when to stop when they were designing the outside. They did the same with the TT

Gen 2 V10 plus is the sweet spot of R8’s imo. Before OPF, soft limiters. Sounds amazing and I prefer the look to the FL 👌🏼

More than anything - the original V8 knew what it was and what it wasn't. It was fast, somewhat practical, and it never tried to be a supercar. Much closer to an average 911, probably cheaper too Personally, I prefer the original because I value Audi's expertise in making some of the best cross-country cars, I don't want bucket seats and 4-point safety belts from them

It was the TT that got Audi back on the map, not the R8. R8 obviously a far better car, but the popularity of the TT concept and design clearly bled through to the R8 - which at the time was ostensibly just a German-made Ferrari 360, even down to the engine being displayed through glass..

Isn't the 5.2 V10 completely unrelated to the original 5.0L Lambo engine? Iirc its basically the Audi V8 with 2 extra cylinders. Just something that I think the presenter got wrong, implying it's derived from the Lambo V10 instead of the Audi (C6) RS6 V10.

You've got that completely wrong. 5.0 was only in the first couple of model year of gallardo. Later they put in a 5.2 which was put in different audis, including the r8

@@BeBarnee Why's he wrong, though? The 5.0 on the first gen gallardo is completely different from the 5.2 that was put on r8, second gen gallardo and hurracan. The 5.2 v10 was an engine built from scratch entirely by audi and it was derived from the 4.2 NA

The only shock at the time, was that VAG would chose to re-brand a Lamborgini as an Audi back in the noughties, and do such a thorough job. It still has some awkward lines about it and that needless at this power level, Haldex / 4wd system. 2WD and I would have bought one from new, instead of a 911.
