I'm really impressed with Aine's painting style. From the chaos that's the water colours emerges something truly beautiful. And I adore her accent.

True, watercolor is always underestimated. I have painted with many mediums, pastells, oil, acryl, chalk, ink, colored pencils etc....but watercolor is the most difficult to achieve something specific. If it is just loose botanicals or landscapes, it is not so difficult to handle, because there is more room for happy little accidents....but watercolor portraits are insanely difficult, becuase one error and the painting is lost. All other mediums can be fixed to some, oil most of all. But watercolor can barely be fixed. It can be done to some extent, but not much. I hate painting with watercolors :D

@@endlessstudent3512 this is the reason I like watercolours the most as you can not fix mistakes. This is the most challenging way to draw.

I think it's hilarious when people try and tell artists that their technique is wrong. If you interpret the world in a particular way, and that's how you use the materials, you are 100% correct. You can find something unattractive, but to say that the art was incorrectly created? That's rubbish.

Here’s the problem… There are two criteria that can determine our judgement of a painting. 1. Is the subject pleasant to look at? 2. Is it well painted ? I can look at two portraits. Both painted equally well. But, I’m more likely to say that the portrait of the attractive person is a “better “ painting than the portrait of the unattractive person.

Christian is by far the better artist. Laura's works are just painted nicely. She has yet to find her own style. But seriously: given the model sitting in the front, photographing it and just looking at the photo while painting? How weird
@u_u8522

I disagree. Christian may have the finished and flashy look for his paintings but the style overshadows the people in it. Laura, although more quiet and reserved in her approach, managed to capture something special in hers, at least in her Sir Ian portrait.

I would like to have the explaination, because I thought it was the worst of the paintings of him. Too much contrast, not enough likeness, the forehead...omg. He looked dirty, like a coal mine worker. The winners portrai of Sir Ian was very good, because he managed to catch the mischievousness. The watercolor was done brilliantly...it is insanley difficult to do portraits in watercolor. I understand if that is not to everyones taste. But imho both were better excecuted than the one he chose.

I like and I don't like this painter. He produces fantastic likenesses. But in my own opinion he spoils them by all the splodges and slashes of odd colours etc in the rest of the painting. The paintings are always quite dull in terms of colours too. I'd really like to see him just paint a portrait with a likeness without all that extraneous stuff in the background.

What you seem to be asking for is realism, closer to how Laura paints. Christian deliberately makes his paintings with a more painterly, artistic flair as part of his own unique style. I have no doubt he could paint in the realist style, but it wouldn't necessarily be unique, and I don't see why he would bother doing it when he has such an amazing style all of his own.

Maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I think that drawing using a photo reference and especially with a grid is cheating, even if it is allowed, it's still cheating, in my opinion.. Of course I think that all three of them are very talented artists, but Anya deserves a special mention for being able to draw the subject from life, only using her eyes for measurements, without using grids, or photos, without tracing anything, even if the proportions are not 100% exact.

I am always surprised by the tolerance - or is it just misunderstanding - the artists are set out to paint a portrait - and end up with - artists hacking reality - The commission painting from Laura was the only painting worth talking about - it was the only real portrait - all the other paintings were impressions - expressions - abstractions or just bad craftsmanship - and those judges? What are they judging, what are the criteria of their personal choices - it is time that the public gets a voice - get 100 random people make a choice - get 100 artists make their choice and then compare that to what the judges may want to justify - - what some of these judges come up with is just so far off from what art is about - it is not judging it is making personal choices that's all it is - and it's nearly always bad.
