There is no reason to rebuild another bridge. Just another hazard waiting to happen Build a tunnel that way you don't have to worry about obstruction or another bridge hit. When the time comes you can bring in taller and bigger ships. So short sighted as usual by over educated people.
The bridge takes the traffic that's no allowed in the tunnels. Haz Mat and propane. Tunnels cost a lot and the environmental impact would slow it down for years. This bridge has been there 47 years, and thousands of ships have passed no problem. The new bridge will be built to current standards and this won't happen again.
The root issue is incompetence in the shipping industry. Cost cutting measures equals poor work practices, equals mistakes in the engine room, equals...oops, bridge ahead.
