Nothing but love and respect for ‪@mkbhd‬ ! I wanted to take a closer look at his editing style in Final Cut Pro & show other FCP editors some alternative methods that they might find better suited to their workflows, their creativity, or the way their brain works. Marques isn't doing anything "wrong" ... he's just doing his thing. And he's obviously doing it very, very well.

Thanks to Dylan Bates for the inspiration for this video. His video about Matti Haapoja was a real inspiration to take a closer look at how MKBHD edits. Check out Dylan’s video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D4CCyCaQp8o.html And I goofed on the keyboard shortcut for dropping clips down - it's Command + *_OPTION_* + ⬇︎, not Command + *_SHIFT_* + ⬇︎ Even the "pros" screw up! 🤦🏻‍♂

Matti Haapoja is THE most frustrating (part time) FCP user out there. His Premiere vs FCP videos are so full of uneducated assumptions about both of the NLEs. Just pure clickbait.

Everyone does things differently, when I was looking at your timelines I was shocked to see you're using the VIDEO role for all your b-roll rather than a B-ROLL role. I use roles for every major type of content. VIDEO, B-ROLL, GFX, CREDITS, LAYERS (adjustment layers and catchall) plus DIALOGUE, MUSIC, EFFECTS Then if I wanna export a 'clean' version, audio only version, or just an a-roll I can, easy peasy!
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
I use b-roll roles for larger projects, especially my long-form documentary edits. I don't bother with my RU-vid content because my workflow is so much simpler than with doc/long-form/client work. Roles are great, for sure, especially when you have a lot of different needs when exporting... RU-vid is pretty straightforward though. Most of my roles for YT are on the audio side. MUSIC, VOICE OVER, SOUND FX, ATMOSPHERE, RISERS, etc. But very few of my YT vids have that level of sound design. Thanks for watching!

Excellent tut. I often do the gap clip method for initial rough cutting, then ‘tidy up’ into the mag tl at the appropriate time, but if it’s a quick job sometimes I don’t bother and leave it. Other times if it feels right I start right on the mag. Secondary tl’s are awesome, I like to use them for music and VO edits too.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
That's certainly a productive way to do it, Bruce. I think that initial building phase really requires just getting stuff on a timeline. Even if it's super rough and a little disorganized. Start putting clips together and getting in the flow - you can always clean up during a break later. Thanks so much for watching!

I think it's a solid option for editors who are, in a sense, brainstorming with their initial steps in the build of an edit. And there's a cool visual layout element to it that makes it a little easier to see the edit just by looking at the timeline.

Impressive video. Subbed. I recently learned to shift what's on the magnetic timeline as I go thru different stages of the edit.👍It takes 10 seconds to bump tracks up and down and shift focus. I also recommend adding a slug at the start where you can connect a full length clip of audio you don't want to move, adjustment layers, guide layers. I started on FCP1😇I love FCPX. No more trauma. The house of cards no longer collapses. It gets up and walks out of the room🤣

Thanks for another bunch of FCP tips that are game-changers for me, Matthew - really appreciate it. At the end of this video you pitch some plug-ins, which got me thinking. As a rookie FCP jockey I've drunk the Kool-Aid and purchased several highly recommended plug-in packages, such as Motion Pop, mTracker, Pixel Film Studios. But I have to say I've not had much luck getting them to work correctly. And it doesn't seem to me that these companies provide support/help aimed at new video editors either, over the phone, via email or in their support docs and vids. Since you're so good at explaining things, I'd like to ask if maybe you could someday do a video on reasons plug-ins don't work as promised, need constant updating, crash FCP, etc.? Thanks again!!
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Sorry to hear you're having issues with your plug-ins. I'd be frustrated about that too. Definitely a good idea regarding a video summing all that up. That's part of why I like motionVFX so much - their mInstaller app allows you to install, un-install, repair, and update. One of their plug-ins was showing up all red for me last week so I went to mInstaller and clicked on "Repair Install" and it worked perfectly after that. Great idea!

Thanks again for another awesome video! My first foray into video editing was with music videos, and in those cases I don't use the magnetic timeline at all because the timing is already predetermined by the music, but when I started doing other videos that required timing edits holy smokes was the magnetic timeline a godsend. I couldn't imagine not having it. I do however still end up with stacks and stacks of clips, but that's mostly because I'm abusing Final Cut and making it do things that I should probably be using Motion or After Effects for, heh. I'm currently learning After Effects so that I can stop abuse FCPX.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien Год назад
Yup, I throw the music or score into the Primary Storyline and edit my video clips above the music. I still use Secondary Storylines extensively to get the benefits of the Magnetic Timeline with those clusters of clips, but of course there are rogue clips that aren't in a Secondary Storyline as well. Glad you're enjoying FCP, Greg!

Editing is my weakness, and this video was just what I needed today. I tried to use the audio match function in FCPX to sync dual system footage and sound. But I was covering a helicopter operation, so everything synced to the beat of the chopper, not the clean audio (dialog) from my audio recorder. This brief tutorial was perfect for my predicament, and offered a clear solution to clean up a real mess.

i make music videos and when i edit i put the song in the mag timeline instead of a gap or the clips, and how i get around having a chaotic timeline is usually by creating compound clips. i feel like there are many ways to use the program and depending on the type of video you are editing it can differ so it can be of use to know all your options. learned some new things from this video but i do agree for what marquis is editing he should convert to your method

There is so much to remember Matthew and press simultaneously, just to do basic editing. As a music video editor that's my biggest problem with it. Instead of staying in the flow, working intuitively and play arround freely I constantly have to watch tutorials just to be able to do even the simplest of things - like moving a clip arround without destroying something a build before etc. There is alway this fear so I don't take the risk- and just put a gap clip on the "monster". I think it is depends on the personality type and your powers of memory to be able to deal with it.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
I agree, David. At first these modifiers and shortcuts feel like big obstacles, but if you endure some pain and friction early on and really focus on practicing them, they'll become second nature and you won't even know you're doing it. You can also add devices like a Loupedeck, Monogram Video Console, or a Stream Deck to your workflow to take the most commonly used complex shortcuts and make them a simple button push. I have both a Monogram Video Console and an iPad running Stream Deck Mobile so I never pop out of the creative flow while I'm editing.

I learned how to edit using the Magnetic Timeline that you go over here. I had no idea people were using the gap clip method 🤯. Definitely seems like more work.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
The Gap Clip method is pretty pervasive. It's one thing for someone who knows the Magnetic Timeline inside and out to use that method in specific situations...it's another when someone's using it to avoid the Magnetic Timeline because they haven't been able to figure it out. I use the Gap Clip method - in a sense - when I edit strictly to music (I put the music track in the Primary Storyline)...

I've wanted to make this video myself for a while for Marques. I remember him saying he switched from Premier when he saw how quick another FCP editor could work/export. I think it's likely a case of not having been shown simple tricks like the tilde key, moving the clip connection, and the P key - and he'd be saving himself a lot of clicks - ultimately he tells a great story, but just thinking of how much time he'd get back and enjoy the editing process more! I used to have taller timelines until another editor friend told me to clean up! Just trimming a few frames of overlapping clips really helps condense clips. Really interesting use of the multi-cam to do cropped cuts, I've been manually doing crops on the timeline. ALSO - is that a blue mouse or rat on your wall?
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
All excellent points, Ben, and I hadn't heard that Marques came over from Premiere. I sort of assumed he went from iMovie up to Final Cut Pro. Not a blue mouse or a rat! It's a cat my daughter drew and it really, really spoke to me. I mean, I know a lot of parents like to treat their kids' "art" like it belongs in an art gallery...but this little blue cat with its eyes and little red paws really, really spoke to me. I'll send a pic on Discord. :)

One of the frustrating things I've found when I'm moving clips around on top of the MT is that butted clips tend to want to suddenly become Secondary Storylines automatically. Now I have a better understanding of what's going on. I wonder if there's a way to keep that from happening.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
The only time I can recall where a Secondary Storyline is created automatically is when adding a transition to a clip that *_isn't_* in a Secondary Storyline... In those instances, there's nothing you can do to change that. FCP _has_ to create a Storyline automatically in order for those transitions to be applied. 🧲🎞
@postpros-e
@postpros-e 2 года назад
Sorry, but there's no way that FCP will be creating secondary storylines willy-nilly just by bumping clips together. The *_only_* way that is going to or can happen is if you're *_holding the G-key_* for some reason. _OR_ one clip is already a secondary and you move it into that storyline inadvertently. Otherwise… nope.
