As a tip, your FCP libraries shouldn't ballon for you if you leave the files where they are and turn off auto render. Mine are kept super small. - For me personally, time is precious and the most valuable asset. Nothing beats the speed and efficiency in FCP. - Last pricing, I paid for FCPX 11 years ago at the ONE TIME price of $299. If I was paying for ONLY Premiere Pro yearly plan, I would have spent $2,640. (As most people pay for the entire CC, that would be over $6,600. 🤣) To each his own, but I am so happy with my FCP.

Matty, so glad to hear that you’re back on Team FCP! Now if you would just re-create all the amazing graphics packages you made for Premiere so that Final Cut users could enjoy them, that would be heaven! Even if you ultimately wind up staying with Premier, for legacy reasons, I hope that you have had a taste of the FCP community and realize that we deserve some of that Matti Haapoja motion graphics love as well. Moving forward, if you would create all your products for Premiere AND FCP, I think that would mean a lot to your users. Just a thought, hope you agree! Would love to have your graphics in my FCP arsenal.

Great video Matti! Blows my mind too how little Adobe focuses on fixing stability. It's been filled with bugs for YEARS, while being the most expensive by far, and there's literally tens of thousands of threads/comments online complaining about it, so it's not like they aren't aware.

I've been using FCP for years. I never thought Premiere Pro would be a seamless workflow so I never left FCP. Been telling people for years that Premiere is just not worth the headache it can/will cause while using it on a Mac. As I watch & listen to so many RU-vidrs complaining about the bugs in Premiere and switching to FCP, I'm glad I was right all along. Most can easily find a hack and work around that magnetic timeline. FCP = headache free. It just works - period! I want things that just work with zero concerns.
@stevenkralovec

4:33 Final Cut DOES have an option for turning off the magnetic timeline (or at least to bypass it). Turn on the position tool (p), command A to select all clips, and click and drag your clips up above the magnetic timeline. Or more simply, select all clips (command A), right-click and "lift from storyline" (there's also a shortcut for that too).... You can also assign video roles, and audio roles, and enable lanes to make them on different "tracks"... Not exactly the same as premiere but it gets the job done for me when I need it, and it's more reliable than Premiere.
@stevenkralovec
@stevenkralovec Год назад
Also you should chat with Tyler Stalman. He has a great tip for keeping library sizes small in FCP. Change the cache location to your folder that the library is saved in, and delete the cache file whenever you want, and it won't affect anything to my knowledge, but it'll save massive amounts of space.

You can also completely avoid the magnetic timeline by using Insert Generator, and inserting a Gap, and resizing it to your entire timeline. A bit kludgy but it allows you to completely ignore the magnetic timeline, and have all your clips / effects / etc above, and all your sounds below. Works great!

There’s a workaround the magnetic timeline, a lot of people will lay down a title effect or just a black image on the main timeline, and then edit the footage above that. Which ends up making the editing process more similar to premiere.

First Point: for Final Cut organisation highly advise using "Final Cut Library Manager" from "Arctic Whiteness" to manage all Library data across multiple drives. I just started with Final Cut on my Mac Studio and I would choose Final Cut over Premiere any time. After all it is an Apple product that works seemlessly bugfree and most efficient. It just feels futuristic compared to the old buggy adobe. Another big plus for me is that it always remembers everything, you can just close it and if you open it again it is exactly there again in 3 seconds without welcome-message or whatever, no loading bugs anymore, no praying that the projecfile will hopefully load fine, it just works amazingly well. By the way, has someone experience with Apple Motion? Is it worth trying out? I heard it is Apples version of After Effects but I'm not so sure bout that.

Used Premier from 2016 to mid-2020 and then switched to Final Cut. I really love Final Cut for all the reasons you mention. Like you, there is a lot that I miss about Premiere. I feel like it's much easier to organize bigger projects, mainly if you shoot on multiple cameras and on different days. I also agree that I like editing in a Premiere timeline better. So I decided to go back to Premiere this week and see if it was any better. I am halfway into a project, and I now wish I wouldn't have done this. Premiere Pro is slowing down so bad that my audio is out of sync with the video when I play the timeline. I am trying to color-correct some shots, and getting the sliders to move is ridiculously slow. If Premiere worked correctly, I would use it hands down, but I am sticking to Final Cut. For those trying to make a decision, it comes down to this, do you want to spend your time creating or troubleshooting? Jason

Hey Matti, the solution to disabling the magnetic timeline is to put the audio track in the project first. Somehow that disables the magnetic timeline for me. Even if I don´t want music in my video I just mute it afterwards with "V". Hope that helps :)
@TheGuitar912
@TheGuitar912 Год назад
Yup I do this too, also you can right click on a clip, lift from timeline. A grey bar is created you can stretch as long as you want!
@Sound-js9yf
@Sound-js9yf Год назад
Their is a way to bypass the magnetic timeline, so if you highlight any clip and click the first tab to the right of "Index" it will fill the magnetic timeline with a grey box that's the same size as the chosen clip on top which gives you the ability to arrange your clips how you want. Pro Tip: if you edit music videos in FPCX, if you add audio by the method which i just explained the audio will be under the timeline, highlight the grey space that fills the magnetic timeline hold command and press the "B" Key every down beat kind of like how a tap tempo button would work. It makes it so much easier edit to music. Now if you lip sync all your clips on top of one another on the timeline, you can highlight and all the clips and cut them to the beat and arrange how you like for the fastest work flow for music videos.. Hope this helps some one.

Outside of missing out on AE, I think there is also something to be said about using the "Junior" program for those learning editing in Imovie first. Imovie is free, and is basically a "Lite" version of FCP. I used Imovie for years before I took a leap to FCP, and was wayyy more comfortable doing it. (Although it's still to this day daunting, and I still have EVERYTHING to learn). FCP harkens back to the days of Apple's slogan "It just works", because it does. The symmetry between hardware and software written to maximize performance on said hardware cannot be overstated. I have only ever used the Apple editing products, and I dont see the need to go anywhere else.

No one ever mentions Motion 5 in these videos, which is always a bummer to me. Granted it doesn’t have as complex of tool as After Effects (Expressions for example), but most of the animated graphics I saw in this video can be made in M5. It links with FCP, is as stable as FCP, uses collapsible/expandable folders instead of precomping (probably the best feature) and it’s $50 forever. I love AE and I’m not saying M5 should replace it. I’m just pointing out that Final Cut has more power than what people usually mention.

As a total noob at motion graphics, the biggest gripe I have with Motion 5 is not even with the program itself, but rather, the lack of tutorials and learning resources online for it. With After Effects, there are so many tutorials online to teach you almost any VFX you have in mind. With Motion 5, however, there are so few. For example, I couldn't even find a tutorial video on how to make audio visualizers in Motion that isn't several years old. Do you know any good sources (website/RU-vid channel) for learning Motion 5? Dylan Bates' channel has some really good videos on Motion (thank you Dylan!), but at least as of today, his video catalog on Motion is not nearly as extensive as I would like as a beginner.

I've started venturing into Davinci Resolve since 2 months and it's a great piece of software, although the UI customisation is a little bit limited in some aspects (can't move panels around). Also a big downside is the lack of ProRes RAW support. Having an Atomos Ninja V this is a big let down. But the options and features are top notch. The colour science is simply finesse! I'm no colourist by any means but I've experimented with the Wide Gamut colour science from Blackmagic, following various guide and tutorials by well established Resolve pro users, and it's on another level, literally. It's a little bit different workflow but I was literally amazed by the results and how granular it is. And also compositing, tracking... all integrated. You can even remove wires from the shot (there's literally a dedicated button) and it's kinda a 3 click process! Some limitations in the free version (yep, it's free) but no deal breaking, as the most advanced ones is for professional. And with 299$ you can keep it forever, future updates included. One time investment! If only that ProRes RAW support... dammit!

I have been using the Davinci Resolve Studio version for about 1.5 years and I have never looked back to Premiere Pro and the paid version of Resolve comes free with blackmagic cameras or you can buy it for $300 one time payment

Hi Matti, awesome review. I love so many things about Final Cut Pro. Its stability for sure, but I absolutely love the thumbnail filmstrip mode in the browser where you can actually see the scenes shot by shot down to the second without having to hit play. This is amazing and I don't know any other NLE that has that feature. I have to look through a lot of WW2 footage and being able to view a 30 minute newsreel in film strip mode allows me to quickly find the scene I'm looking for much faster than if I had to fast forward in a traditional program monitor window. Another stunning feature in Final Cut is the metadata search window with its keywords where you can pull up any clip in a split second. Then there's the trackless aspect which I find revolutionary. I still use Premiere now and again but find it really antiquated in comparison and still glitchy. However one thing I wish Final Cut Pro would borrow from Premiere is the flexibility Premiere offers when it comes to keyframing animation on stills. In Premiere, like in After Effects, you can tweak the animation/velocity curve in the Graph editor. For me, Final Cut is so close to being perfect, its just needs a few more improvements, a Graph Editor for keyframing would be ideal.

I’ve used all three of the majors.. days on final cut, years in premiere, and a year or so in Davinci.. really cut my teeth learning editing in premiere but ultimately all of the glitchiness left me frustrated and I downloaded davinci and have never looked back. Everything is well organized, glitches are gone, all the tools are there, fusion is powerful if you need 3D, the only reasonable thing I can think of that would keep a person is premiere is audition (but how many people really need/use that) Davinci has plenty of sound tools that are powerful enough for most everything. Moral of the story: Davinci is the clear cut winner for me, premiere and final cut would both be behind that.. since switching to davinci I’ve cut 15-20% off my editing time because there are no glitches and/or lag For reference: I am editing on 24” iMac

But I don't know how many times Premiere crashed and it did so always in the most stressful situations of a project. That's why I finally switched to DaVinci Resolve and guessed what: it's the most bug-free, intuitive video editing program ever (at least for me). I even bought the Studio version to be able to edit XAVC codec. I highly recommend everyone to try it out!

I know Davinci optimized for M1 too. Only issue I had was color grading, I had to change several color settings in the options to get it to match after render, but after that it’s been spot on.

It is sooooo frustrating specially in a 50 minute classroom setting, restart your project three times in a period, ugh; I thought the issues would be resolved with the new M1 chip, but I've been disappointed. The license for a section of 109 students is so expensive that I can purchase another camera(s) plus lens. Keep in mind; that I have to purchase creative cloud, NO option for Pr or Ae only. With the purchase of FCPX Studio for $199, I purchased the license for 35 computers, and done! No more monthly expenses.

As a HS graphic design and video teacher, I feel your pain. I have IT install resolve on the computers along side of AP. My problem is that the BOE (Ohio) has decided that credentials need to be part of my curriculum. The only credentials accepted are Adobe. I was on the standards writing committee a few years ago and ironic thing is that they wouldn’t let us use any commercially specific language in the standards (IE we couldn’t say premiere, we had to say something like “edit videos on a timeline”. But all of the state program tests and credentials used are ONLY based on specific commercial products. I have used fcp, avid, AP, resolve, and too many others to count for over 25 years and premiere has sucked since since 1996.

I’ve been using Premiere Pro for about 2 years. In the beginning I didn’t notice many issues, but my videos were so simple that I could have stayed on iMovie… Now that my videos are getting much more complex, it is really bogging down the system and I generally have to attempt to export a project several times. I have learned to save the project with edits and graphics in segments (couple min each) and then open a new project, place the segments in order and re-export to combine into a single video. I now have less issues as if the export fails, I only lost 20-30min of export time, not 2-3 hours. But I did just get a nearly maxed out MacBook, so hoping that will help a bit.

Matti, DaVinci Resolve is next level for color grading.. I grade in DaVinci (due to Filming in BRAW) and edit in FCPX. DaVinci has a Rec 709-A color space to rectify this.

Hey matti, if you want to "turn off" the magnetic timeline you tap option + G which will lift your video from the storyline. From their your clips arent connected to the magnetic timeline and you can build up from their. Also the best way to import media into Final Cut Pro is to choose file -> import and click the option "leave files in place" this will keep all the media in the original location. The last tip I have for final cut is to make sure you keep all your files outside of final cut organized. When i import my media I always have an external file structure and i click the option "create events from folders" this lets me essentially auto generate final cuts version of bins and keep all my media organized. A bonus tip is if you want to keep things on the magnetic timeline but youre trying to move a clip and the clip above it moves with it, the short cut is the tilda key and this will allow you to change where the clip is connected. Also P on the keyboard switches your cursor so you can move clips and overwrite others rather than the clips snapping to the magnetic timeline. I love your videos keep it up!

There are 3 main CHALLENGES: 1) all software has some glitches, it is inevitable 2) video editing software companies do not target a lot of "avatar", pretty much complete basic beginner and a pro, however lots of people are in-between, e.g. they cannot afford the full price because not monetizing their editing yet or ever, and they need some features but not so many (as it is a steep learning curve and for a smaller screen harder to edit with the interface is cluttered with functions). What is more reasonable to do imo is to offer an affordable price + add-ons for extra price. or 3-4 different versions of software. 3) challenge 3 is it is not only about specs, features, price (all definitely important), yet also PC vs MAC, because for example I use some astrology software for work which does not work as smoothly (or do not exist) for MAC, so either one has to buy a mac + fcp for video editing and a PC for some other apps, or ... ?? I've used HitFilm Express for a few years, basic features, simple color correction. Then could not even use it on a new laptop, it kept crushing. and the new one is not praised and became pricey. Add to that if you have to travel for a few months somewhere or people who are digital nomads and cannot have a lot of stuff, voila. 4) There is also the 4th problem, when you do not prolong a subscription of the version of editing software you use is obsolete, it is hard to go back and re-purpose / remake or finish a shelved project. which makes the essential need to become a psychic to be able to predict what will happen to software and your projects if... :)
