This is GOLD! I made the switch.... well, I tried... to make the complete switch from FCPX to Resolve 17, I went and got the full Studio version, and I really like the color grading options, but I cannot get used to resolve's editing features and slow performance compared to FCPX, so I decided to color grade in Resolve and finish my edits in FCPX, this has turned out to be the best video I found for this workflow. Thank you!

Hey Jaime you are GOLD! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. It's cool to hear the video has helped open up some options so you don't feel stuck in Final Cut. Your idea of just using Resolve for color is a solid one. That's how using Resolve started for me. Final Cut Pro is still a ridiculously incredible editing tool and one that I use every week, depending on the task.

but one thing I noticed, say I export an slog 3 footage from Final Cut into davinci,davinci doesnt recognise it as slog 3 anymore, so when I add it to a timeline which has been converted for slog 3 in the colour management in the settings it doesn't get transformed from slog 3 to rec 709,the colours just aren't the same also when u export clips from Final Cut for some reasons, luts dont work the same also

Brilliant tutorial, Chadwick! Thanks for the walkthrough, plus the helpful hints along the way. I used this method this week for a project. Can't say that DaVinci is very stable to work in, and def hit some snags during import / media / etc, but this was immensely helpful -- thank you! Chadler Castle posted a great video on how to solve the unlinked Sony media issue which I saw when following your steps. You should def include that as a component. Thanks again for the info!

@@CreativeVideoTips I ended up not getting it to transfer from FCPX to Resolve properly. Probably because I am on older versions: FCPX 10.4 and DaVinci 15. I'm just going into Resolve with a ProResHQ master from FCPX using auto scene detection. I'm not able to move edits, but at least I am able to color grade in DaVinci - which takes the quality to a whole new level!

Not all heroes wear capes! You're a life saver. Thank you for this tutorial. I've been following your videos. Keep making them! I use a program called "Recut" to remove the silence on my clips and export it to a .fcpxml. This video taught me how to import that file (THANKS AGAIN!)

The way you explain things in a nutshell is just marvelous! This is pure gold! A bit overwhelming though as I have just started using Resolve. I am really struggling with the entire roundabout trip being a newbie. I have made my primary edit in Davinci and I need a small chunk of it to be edited in a specific manner by a different editor who uses FCPX(the ins and outs have already marked by me though. He is just going to line them up, use certain transitions, speed/slow, probably use some effects and scale the footage). What's the best possible way to go about this as the transitions the other editor is going to use are going to be FCPX specific which won't translate back when I open the xml file in Davinci once he is done. I wish to retain all the information and changes he does in FCPX. Colour and audio isn't a problem as it's going to be handled in Davinci before exporting. Thanks a ton for this video. It would really mean a lot if you could help me out with this. Peace and love from India! :)

This is the video I was looking for -- thank you! I love and want to keep both programs for their strengths -- but editing on the magnetic timeline is really the only thing Final Cut does better at this point... Granted, that's pretty important, but I love the ability to import the timeline rather than have to re-cut all the clips. Thank you!

This is perfect! I'm in love with Resolve but it SUCKS for titles. There are many wonderful plugins and such but Fusion is extremely inefficient still on Apple Silicon. Now I can round trip from Resolve to FCP for titles then back after exporting the transparent titles layer. THANK YOU!

If anyone tries this, when you're about to export the titles, FCP will estimate a HUGE file export. In my case, for a 6:45 min video, it was estimating 17.03 GB!! I let it export anyway and the real file size ended up being only 692MB. Don't be afraid to try this, you won't eat up your storage.

Love the videos as always. I’d be interested to hear your opinion about final cut vs resolve. Resolve is obviously more powerful from a technical stand point, but i feel like it really suffers from an ease of use stand point. I spend a lot of time editing and am always looking for ways to do it faster (which is why your videos are so great). Is final cut an more intuitive, creative nle over resolve? Is the work flow mentioned in this video worth the hassle? I’ve only ever used resolve and would love to know what you think.

You rock - thanks for the support. I think this is going to have to be a video I make sometime this fall. It's more controversial though then like to be though. From your pov, if you have only worked in Resolve and are happy with it. Absolutely no, I would not bother with running Final Cut or even trying it out. I have a unique perspective with being very fluent in premiere, avid, final cut, and resolve from working in a few different environments the past couple decades. The roundtrip workflow is worth it if someone is hesitant to edit inside of Resolve. And yes I do think its less intimidating for folks without video experience to open and start to create in Final Cut. Apple does a great job of only showing you what you need, when you need it so it's less scary or distracting. Performance is nearly identical now with the latest Resolve and Final Cut. So from an editing technical stand point, they're even. From color, effects, and sound - Resolve is way more capable. The cut page in Resolve, when you use track 1, is very similar to the behavior of the magnetic timeline in Final Cut. Final Cut always avoids clip collisions because its attaching clips instead of assigning tracks which is a benefit and you have the ability for Final Cut to bundle and manage all of your media which is handy in situations.

If I'm decided on moving away from Premiere Pro and have access to both FCPX and Resolve (not the studio version) would you recommend learning both, or sticking to Resolve only? FCPX looks simple and straightforward... Resolve more robust allowing me to do my usual functions from After Effects. Definitely would love to hear your thoughts on a comparison...

Thanks for the tutorial, i have a error while trying to import the Resolve XML to Fcpx Again Its says " The content could not be imported. (The original content: / fcpxml [1] / resources [1] / asset [140].) Wrong file type or format " Please will really appreciate if you can well, i dont know whats causing this Error.

@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks for replying after hours of going fighting with the system, finally found a solution. The problem arise when i import the XML to Resolve and replace the Prores with their Original Braw files, After Grading and Render XML to go back to FCPX, its Give Error. But When i Grade the prores and not the Braw file Upon Render and Import XML Back to FCPX all went well. why ? i don't know. i work have light to grade with the braw file.

Importing reference clip... You can now just drop any clip into the Source viewer when it's in Offline mode. The Timeline viewer has Difference mode under right click.

Tremendous tutorial. Thank you. Has anything changed with this workflow now we’re full v18 resolve? Also, color management issues. FCPX is kinda prosumer level on color. Are there issues with roundtripping regarding maintaining correct colorspace between the two apps? I think that would make a superb new tutorial! (hint hint) Thanks again.

Hi I love all your tutorial videos. Can you make a tutorial on the best workflow when working with remote editors (via Fiverr in my case) where I can share the video clips and receive back the davinci project files after their edit so I can make final tweaks. The issue I am running in to is they share the final video, but most often I need to make few changes to that video and I needed a way to efficiently transfer Davinci project files back & forth with editor who may use Final cut or Adobe or Davinci.

Hi There, EXCELLENT tutorial brother! You've covered it ALL, I had no idea about the reference video capability! I am having a problem with stills though, Resolve does not want to retain any of the position and sizing keyframes when I send it over, any ideas what I may be doing wrong? This is weird, stills (PNG's & JPEGS to be exact) should be the EASIEST thing for Resolve to translate I would guess. All video that I've keyframed translates perfectly. Thanks for any help! : )

Super helpful tutorial but I've been stuck on the multicam thing for an hour now. Resolve does not understand them when I import the xml and just leaves those sections of my edits completely blank. I might have to manually reconstruct some things to make it work

Hi Tyler, hmm there must be something either up with the a version of the xml, or the way the multi-cam in Final Cut Pro was created. Unfortunately you can't flatten a multi-cam in Final Cut which would be the simplest answer. When you import the xml, do you get an error? or is the "blank" segment an offline clip, or and empty timeline space? hmm

Hi, great video. I'm working with proxies in Final cut. Let's say I changed all the file names in Final Cut. When I export the XML to Resolve for color grading, is Resolve going to be able to link to the original raw files?

One issue I found doing it this way is when you store footage in an external location in FCPX (outside the library) and go to import the XML files into Davinci, you get a mess with all your media missing... hard to find videos addressing this, still working on a solution

Thanks Josh - are you referring to exporting from resolve with multichannel audio? If so, the answer is yes, but... It does take a little more setup with utilizing busses in unless you choose to output all timeline tracks. But if for instance you had multiple tracks of dialogue and wanted all of them on one channel on your output file - you would need to bus them together (which is what roles does in final cut).

No problem. Anytime you create a new video file there is a possibility you can lose some of the quality especially if you create a lower resolution or bit rate file from the original. But... if you keep things high quality or use the original files there is no concern.

Great to hear this was helpful - you will want to change the (par) - pixel aspect ratio to correct for anamorphic using clip attributes - (right click on the clips) - video - pixel aspect ratio - in there is an option for 1.3 anamorphic.

great video! At 6:40, when I export my fcpx xml to resolve, all the files appear as missing even though it’s in the same folder. The only fix has been resetting all clips TC to 00:00:00:00 manually. Have you ever seen anything like that?

Hey Chadwick. Thanks for this video. I have a question though. We are getting a cold shift when we bring our footage from resolve 17 back to FCPX using XML. The footage gets a little washed out when you bring it back.

Your welcome. I’m not sure what could be causing it to be colder but you can be seeing a gamma tag issue. Have you tried using a rec709a workflow before? This might solve the problem if you only monitor on the gui monitor. Check out my video on RU-vid setting a from November on how to turn that on in resolve.

I gave up on Davinci a while ago bc I have too many plugins I use in FCPX, but today I tried to color grade a project and when importing the XML I get the missing media symbols and I have a lot of clips that I synched external audio to so maybe that might be a problem also . I tried zeroing out the timecode in Clip attributes trick but it is greyed out and does not have any numbers in it Any suggestions? Sony A7IV here and Resolve 17. FCPX 10.6.3 I am using the same external SSD as the FCPX project is stored

Hey I exported the xml from final cut and when i try to open it in davinci it says the clips cant be found. When i click on the folder where my video clips are it still doesn't work. I unlinked the clips and tried to relink them and when i do it shows up as audio but no video clips.

Nice Video! Have you ever worked with blackmagic raw? I wonder if it is possible to convert it into some kind of proxy in DR and send it to FCP for editing. Then, send it back to DR via fcpXML and replace the proxy by original BRAW files for color grading. Finally, get back to FCP to have all the effects (or even sent to Protools / Logic Pro for sound design...)

Thank you. I have not worked with braw yet, but have worked with red and arri raw for years. And yes absolutely you can do that workflow. In fact most big budget stuff is done this way and then sent avid to edit instead of fcp. Here are your basic steps - create new quicktime 1920x1080 prores LT or Proxy are good choices in Resolve with source name. That's the kicker names need to match exactly (extensions will be different). Also pay attention to add reel names based of the embedded metadata if braw has it. Edit with those ProRes clips in FCP - export your fcpxml - (don't even bother trying to import the braw into FCP.) Don't import the ProRes back into Resolve, just import the fcpxml without linking to the source clips and it should find and match to your braw source files because your names match up. Finally to finish back in FCP - use the FCP roundtrip preset which will give you individual files that are have unique names this time and come with an fcpxml to import.

Hi @Chadwick, I have been a FCP guy for several years and my workflow while using the software has greatly improved. Recently however, I have found a cause to switch to Davinci Resolve based on my last project, and I just wonder what your thoughts are about completely sticking with Davinci instead of switching between both softwares. Do you also find that you use one more than the other?

I am worried that I may lose some details when exporting timelines between the softwares and eventually giving myself too much work in the long run, that I'd just rather stick to one. I have loved FCPx in all the years I have used it but I am ready to make a full switch to Davinci once my learning curve matches FCPx.

It really just depends. If I could have 1 tool to do everything it would just be resolve. And I do the majority of my editing in it too. Final Cut is amazing too but doesn’t have all of the features built in that Resolve has. Final cut has 2 major strengths. It always has the best performance on a mac and the trackless timeline can be a big advantage to not needing to think about targeting tracks. But yeah even though you can move between systems. It takes extra time and you need to always check the translation because everything can’t always translate. Although fcpxml is the best translation that’s out there.

Hi! this is a great video and helped a lot but it leaves off one part that I can't figure out! after you add the resolve clips back into the original timeline as a compound clip, how do make that compound clip the primary storyline? right now I just have two sets of the same video on top of each other, one that is color corrected and one that is not. it makes my file huge!

Can you right click to break the compound clip apart? I would do that, then just disable the original clips. You could also delete them from the timeline then select the new graded footage and push it down to the primary storyline.

First off, this tutorial was golden! Love how you structured it! However, I have one question regarding importing my XML to Resolve.. My FCPX footage was exported from my external hard drive but when I try to imported it into Resolve it says "13 of 13 clips were yet not found". I've tried to change media storage in preferences and also created a new disk when starting a new project. Still doesnt work :(

Thanks dude. I would start by tracking down those clips manually by right clicking in final cut pro and reveal in finder. If you are able to find them that way you can try manually adding them to your resolve project - if timecodes and names all match it should auto populate/conform.

Hi, I’m using MacBook Pro 16 2019 to edit my 4KHDR from iPhone 12. However, fcpx can be extremely slow to export since it doesn’t support 4k HDR HEVC hardware encode on Intel computer. Also, exporting fcpxml to DaVinci Resolve makes sounds really loud and title in wrong position. I would like to use DaVinci since it supports hardware acceleration for this computer. Which solution would you think is better? 1. Export as ProRes in FCPX: a 10 min clip can be export in 12 mins and transcode to HEVC in Davinci in 15 mins which makes a 12+15=27 export time. Or use fcpxml to DaVinci and re-edit the title and sound and export the video directly in DaVinci which the export time might be 15 mins. Which workflow do you think is better?

Hi there - I would probably do option 1, except not bother transcoding to HEVC. HEVC is really only useful for capturing or delivering a really long show when you have limited bandwidth to upload.

Hey Chadwick, are you working with RAW? I'm getting a camera & recorder setup which will allow me shoot ProRes RAW, and I'm really excited about it. Now my question is, let's say your footage was shot in ProRes RAW. The clips would playback and edit smoothly in FCPX with no problems. Would you then have to do any transcoding on the actual files (like maybe create copies in ProRes 4444 somewhere on your computer) before exporting the XML file for grading in DR17?

Hi Alpha, I'm not using prores raw for anything currently. This is a tough one for resolve because of the politics of blackmagic raw and prores raw. To really take advantage of the raw clips - yes I would do as it sounds like you are saying - edit in Final Cut Pro with the raw clips and adjust any white balance or exposure issues there inside of Final Cut - then probably export a flattened ProRes 4444 clip to do a final grade in Resolve with. In other words you can't work with the prores raw inside of resolve so get it in the right world in final cut first. You can create optimized as 4444 too, but that can get quite large if it's a longer video so that depends if you need the handles or to come back with a roundtrip.

Thanks for the very informative video! I'm encountering issues with importing XML from FCPX to DaVinci Resolve. DaVinci cannot locate the clips I used in FCPX. It's saying 'X out of X clips cannot be found'. Can you make a video about how to solve problems like that?

You're very welcome Benjamin. The first thing I would check is to make sure in FCP that you can right click and find the media in finder - make sure that final cut is actually seeing the media. Next, I'd check to see - does DaVinci have read write privileges the same as Final Cut does to that specific volume storing the footage. If both of these are good - Resolve "should" be able to locate the files. This is a tough one to make a video on because there are so many variables. Hopefully one of this ideas might help link those on import for you. Oh one more thing to take a look at - the reels metadata in the project settings, adjusting this can sometimes solve importing issues.

@@eduardstuermer yes I tried that too but you still have to change the start time in every clip manually for it to work on davinci. It could be the solution for small projects where you have less footages but for larger projects with many footages its not practical

Hmmm, it could be a few things. The first I would check is to make sure resolve can see the folder of footage, that it's connected that Final Cut sees. The next would be to check if there are duplicate filenames if you are just missing a few of them.

One simple option is to export a flat single ProRes file and then use the scene cut detect feature to chop it up in resolve. I have a video in the resolve playlist on scene detection that might help.

I made the move from FCP to Resolve and of course there are a few things I miss, the most notable 2: not being able to import tags and most of all not being able to create favourites from I&O selects that you can then choose from when doing the basic edit (on cut page). Do you have any suggestions, or am I missing a decent alternative that already exists; I know one could populate the cut page with clips but I would rather avoid that I think. And of course you can import folders, but I got used to multi-tagging clips.

Hey Lee - now you are really getting the best of both worlds! Start taking a further look into the smart bins in resolve. It's not the same as tags, but it's not super different either. Regarding the way you are using favorites from FCP - I would use what is called a subclip in resolve. The subclip is basically the exact same thing as a marked favorite range. Thanks for that workflow ! I’ve been trying to do it many times but facing issues when importing back the FCPXML back to FCPX ! An error keep popping up “the media could not be imported” can’t figure out what’s going on! I’ve been facing that issue for a few month now … updates are not helping

​@@CreativeVideoTips I got an answer! Apparently the issue comes from the actual FCPXML file generated into Davinci. It seems like when using BRAWs files, color grading them into Davinci and exporting the project via FCPXML to import back into FCPX, the XML files keeps the .BRAWs file extension. So when importing the XML back to FCPX it can't relink the files... One way around it is; Editing the FCPXML file generated from Davinci into textEdit by searching and replacing all the .BRAWs into .MOVs files. and save the file. Then when importing the FCPXML into FCPX it can link to the proper files that are Apple ProRes .mov. Hope that helps.

You’re welcome Eric - good question. I don’t think there is anything built in the app by default that can do this but I might be wrong. Let me see if there’s a plugin out there that can read the files to give this info. update - looks like I was wrong after 10.2 they did add this as an effect. Just type in “timecode” into the effects window and you can drop that on your clips - you have the option to show clip or project tc, maybe duplicate the effect to get both.

Hi Paul - It could be that the file just isn't supported by Resolve. I have come across one set of AVCHD from a decade ago on a project this year that Resolve just won't read that codec. It might not be the filename.
