IMPORTANT: TASVideos judging looks at much more than just entertainment for publishing a TAS. Entertainment value is just a very small aspect of the process that only determines what tier the final product is listed under on the site, and shouldn’t overshadow the much more important criteria. Verifying that the submission syncs properly for everyone, ensuring inputs actually complete the TAS and more are things that they look at. You can find the judging guidelines here: tasvideos.org/Judgeguidelines
@JamesLewis2
@JamesLewis2 2 года назад
More than that, the user votes do not determine whether the submission is ultimately published; the users do tend to have a similar sentiment to the actual judges, but with a noticeable bias toward Yes, toward allowing submissions with play that a more discerning eye would know was sloppy, especially if there is not already a published run for the game (or for that specific category).

Honestly, its not the "get a auto win button" that im bored of, its the 5minute credits warps. It feels like every old game is destined to eventually be ACE'd or overflowed into a random credits warp, and it sucks. I love glitches, and i want them to be used to beat the game, not skip it

@@simplyskrypt3914 I never said anything about srm/ace being fun or not. Just that style runs are more entertaining to watch. Credit warps. Skipping half the game. Sure it's impressive on some level. But any% speedrunning lately has become more about NOT playing the games. And just getting to the credits sequence as fast as possible. It's kinda disingenuous in a way too...Nobody's really 'beating' the game. They're circumventing the rules entirely. It's interesting for sure. But it's not that fun to watch. I mean...maybe it's just me...But I don't think it's very fun to watch Young Link crouch block in kokiri forest for an extended period of time. And then be warped to the end of the game. Once you've seen it once. That's it. It's not that interesting anymore.

Having separate catagories for glitched runs and non-glitched runs is good. It's neat to see how broken the game is but it's also nice to see how a somewhat "proper" speedrun can be done.

A proper speed run is a fast one, period. This comment is nonsensical. You probably meant to use the word intended. It's nice to see the game played quickly as intended.

Hi there. I'm a TASer who's been in the community for 10 years now. Since this video was published, we've been steering away from an "entertainment" focused site to a more inclusive one, accepting of all games be they boring or entertaining. We've also completely gotten rid of tiers, so if your TAS is boring, it will still be shown right next to the entertaining ones as opposed to segregating them.

I think of TASing the same way I think of programming a player piano. It's more an achievement in programming than playing, but it can be neat to watch/listen to just the same, and can help live players as well.

Whoa hey! I'm the guy who figured out how the item upgrade glitch works. That's my documentation on the screen beginning at 7:28! Just to add some additional commentary on that subject, I was inspired to figure out how the glitch worked by a GameFAQs article on the same subject. However, the setup the article had was obnoxious and complicated. I wanted to see if there was an easier way, and managed to suss what made the bug tick. Although I never did contribute to the speedrun itself, and even though this specific bug was ditched in favor of item destacking, I'm still kind of proud that I was able to contribute. Glad this video came up in my feed!

I remember well when this run first came out - I was the one who did the TASvideos encode for it. There's so much hardcore work put into it, so many intricate details, and most of it happened pretty much behind the scenes. The item glitch was known, but finding out exactly how to use it in the best possible way was a huge amount of work. Nice breakdown of the techniques involved! Although I think it's kind of funny you're presenting the "vote on the TAS" as some kind of dramatic thing when there's basically absolutely no way in hell it would've been rejected. Typically the only runs that get rejected are very low effort ones, or ones that break the rules. I do kind of regret that pirohiko's run isn't the main one anymore, though, because it's the best one of the bunch. A similar thing happened with the Chrono Trigger TAS, where an earlier run that required a huge pile of interesting glitches ended up being obsoleted by a run that required only one, much more precise glitch.

FF3 is one of my major inspirations for wanting to make a game that incorporates glitches as a core part of it. All because I've watched a streamer years ago showcasing both Uni's and Pirohiko's routes. Still haven't made the game, but I've started working towards it. So this video just made me smile throughout and I can't thank you enough.

But if something is intentional by the programmer, then doesn't that mean it's not a glitch by definition?
@nestrior7733

@@ytmndman I continue to call them glitches for the context the word provides. Because I have no other word for "hidden mechanics that make the game act in "abnormal" ways to enable many different paths to finish it." If you have one that is widely recognisable, then please do share it. "Easter egg" describes many different things and most people think of "neat thing that is hidden behind meeting condition(s) but rarely has impact on actual gameplay."

Ah yeah, I wouldn't want to try and TAS or even speedrun this, but I love playing FF3 with the Item Upgrade Glitch since the only really time-consuming part of it is getting Onion Swords. Once you get that (and the Onion Helm/Armor/Gloves, which are much faster to upgrade) it turns the game into a joke. As a bonus, if you get 2 potions when you're trying to do the Item Upgrade Glitch, it also overflows the lead character's EXP, and they'll automatically level up after every other random battle until they hit level 99.

Unconfirmed Gossip: It is mind-boggling to understand that item upgrade glitch were found out almost right after the release of original Famicom version (by gaming magazines at the time, it seems). Kids back in the days seem to create 4/5 of Onion sets immediately in the Cave of Trials.

I used to do the upgrade glitch all the time to get onion stuff for my party, problem is the onion sword was waaaaaay further down the line (like further than the forbidden land weapons) than say the armor pieces which all just needed to be upgraded once from leather, so you'd just sit there for hours hoping to get potion drops to trigger it. Crazy how you could use that same glitch to skip most of the game.

I kinda feel like any tas that breaks a record should get automatic approval, regardless of how boring... Not saying it should be at the top of the list, but it should be approved because there's a long history of people thinking some tas tricks aren't able to be done by humans and then someone pulling it off.

Well, I wasn't expecting to see a full dedicated video to a TAS! I use to staff for TASVideos as a Publisher, until about 2013 or so. It was absolutely wild seeing the things that would roll up. I kind of regret leaving the role, to an extent, but circumstances outside of that site began hitting me really hard. RPG speedruns always felt like the type that would be the hardest to beat. They seemed like they needed the most research to kill, simply because they (usually) weren't precision based. So you rarely got several frame or second shaving amounts that you might get from, say, an action game, simply because most RPG TAS's didn't have the tiniest oversights that an action game run might have. So RPGs getting these sort of giant time save chunks was both incredibly satisfying and massively exciting. And sometimes a categorisation headache for the publisher and judge. :) Thanks for listening to my ramble, if you did at all!

I don't dislike TASes and game breaking speedruns, but I just can't get into em as much as the glitchless stuff. Its like when I watch golf and bowling. I don't care about golfers being able to produce a 425yd drive or bowlers who can shoot perfect games.
