Tifa's fighting grunts here at 1:21:59 are so sad. She sounds devastated and furious while she fights. Those punches are fueled by the loss of her best friend. Love Britt Baron's performance in this game so much.

I really like Zack’s spirit. The worlds reuniting and him and Aerith being alive is exactly what him and I do want.

Alrite there are two ways to interpret that last cutscene. Either Sephiroth is messing with Cloud again with Aerith's image. Or Aerith's spirit is talking to Cloud via the empty White Materia. Materia are said to contain the memories of the ancient Cetra, so i can see Aerith somehow imprinting a part of herself into the white Materia

Areith covering up for cloud given sephiroth the black materia by lying saying sephiroth beat up cloud and thats how he got the materia instead was heart-felt

Cait Sith’s “This is bad. This is very bad.” was spoken with such emotion. I don’t know why but that spoke out to the most during the ending. Even the most optimistic party member saw the doom of the situation.

This is a reworked post with multiple steps to understand the ending that I did previously in a “Cloud and Aerith date in the alternate timeline“ video by Faz Faz (my respects for your efforts). I had to correct some steps and add the detail. All below is my interpretation of what is shown, or attempt to make educated guess. Agree or disagree as you see fit. aka Final Fantasy VII and the Masters of the Many-worlds interpretation of the quantum theory. 🤪 1. Yes, it is a sequel to the OG, just not a chronological one. Not an expanded retelling. Sephiroth is definitely playing against the plot of the OG by introducing more or less subtle changes into the history, not rewriting it outright. Shinra - Wutai coalition war is a next big thing. I suspect that Sephiroth wants to sabotage Shinra’s ability to bring down the barrier around Northern Crater. Coalition does not need to win, it must cripple Midgar's power generation capabilities to make Shinra unable to fire the Junon Canon, or to make the shot not powerful enough. 2. At the beginning of the Rebirth we are aware about three realities/timelines: OG, Rebirth/Remake (will be labeled as R), Zack's (will be labeled as Z1). Z1 is a result of branching from the R at the end of the remake. Realities can be differentiated by the Stamps (Shinra mascots), amongst other things. Hound for R, terrier for Z1. Zack sees the rift in the sky in Z1. Aerith "does not like the sky" in R, because she also sees the rift (new ending for Remake). 3. These worlds are connected through the Lifestream, Z1 is dying, but it's not an afterlife. "A world that have accepted its fate", per Sephiroth's words. 4. Marlene words are important, but you must always keep in mind, that she's a kid, who speaks her impression of what she saw, not what actually must be done. 5. Zack is told by Marlene, that if Aerith wakes up in Z1, she dies, how Cloud almost saves her, but "does not make it in time". To avert that "he gotta make Cloud better". 6. Later, we see Zack on the bike at the tunnel crossroad. He must choose a path - he takes the left tunnel to save Biggs at the Reactor 6, or he takes the right tunnel, and goes after Hojo, to get possible cure for Cloud. He remembers his talk with Marlene about Cloud and Aerith. He takes the right path, and goes after Hojo. As he disappears, we see bright light stream from the left tunnel. 7. After fighting Shinra troops at the Shinra HQ he goes to help Biggs at the Reactor 6. He sees Biggs eating chips, the chips pack has Stamp's image, but it's a pug now. With his previous choice Zack branched new, Z2 reality, in which he is now. Shinra troops arrive, and his situation at the end of the Crisis Core repeats. Zack jokes about fate having a cruel sense of humor, and how he will make his own rules. He escapes the fight. 8. Later, Aerith (I believe OG Aerith is involved) wakes up herself and Cloud, they have what looks like farewell date. She pretty much says goodbye to the world of living, savoring every moment with Cloud. At one of the store shelves we see figurine of Stamp, who now looks like Spitz. This is different reality from Z1 and Z2. Let’s label it A1. She sees black feather, and hears Sephiroth's voice "So this is where you've been hiding. In a world that has accepted its fate. Just as you must". She is visibly upset. 9. Later, we see Zack at the church entrance. We see Jonny passing by, he has Shiba-Inu Stamp toy with him. With his “screw destiny” act previously Zack branched Z3 reality! Sephiroth arrives, says that he wants piece of "no, not him", kicks Zack of his feet, and enters the church. We see Aerith giving Cloud white materia and pushing him into a "portal". Likely, she gets killed. This happens in Z3 reality, and we honestly have no clue about Z1, Z2 and A1. We can skip to the ending part now. Some portion of it needs great attention. 10. 1:04:52 party arrives at the Ancient Capital. Sephiroth’s Whispers block the entrance to the altar, Red and Barret try to break through, but are unable to. Barret directly states how similar it is to the situation they were near the end of the Remake. 11. 1:05:43 Cloud looks at the barrier, calls Aerith, and suddenly three of the Sephiroth’s whispers attack the other Sephiroth’s whispers. Something in this scene, Cloud’s eyes and attitude, maybe, tell me that perhaps he was able to exert some measure of control over them (he’s a Sephiroth’s clone, after all). What we see, is nothing other, then what we have seen in the Remake. “Destiny’s Crossroads”. (Now my biggest mistake is that I have failed to recognize the obvious entrance to Destiny Crossroads previously. Got a hint from one of the reviews, sadly, forgot which one. Will add info later cause credit where it’s due. They also noticed one of the stamps I have missed (A1). 12. Now remember Aerith’s line from Remake: “If we do… We’ll be changing more than fate itself. If we succeed… if we win… We’ll be changing ourselves”. In the Remake Aerith stabilized the entrance, and the entire party was able to enter. This time Aerith is not with them, and they have to stay to keep the entrance open Cloud enters the singularity without his teammates, only a few White Whispers follow him. What will happen inside will affect only him. 13.1:08:40 Cloud approaches Aerith. Whispers fight each other. Sephy’s ones try to force Cloud to attack Aerith, but he resists them. Sephiroth appears and tries to kill Aerith. Cloud notices him, bright colorful light appears around his sword, and Cloud blocks his strike. The moment he tosses him aside (1:10:33), we again see the wave of the bright light. If someone haven’t guessed it yet, this light signifies the defiance of intended destiny, and the barrier between the realities. 13.1:10:37. Whispers coalesce around Sephy’s sword, and the rest of the party sees the Whisper barrier dissipating. They enter the altar area. But let’s remember - they were not at the Destiny Crossroads. 14. 1:11:00 We see the image flashing. We see two outcomes. In one, room is engulfed with bright light, and has Sephy’s sword in the ground standing vertically (deflected - outcome 1, O1). The second one has sword at the angle (not deflected, O2), and the blood on the ground. Aerith collapses, Cloud sees that and catches her. We see no blood on her. The entire sequence of her collapsing is shown in O1. Sephiroth takes his sword back, the angle at which it happens, hints that he perceives the O2, instead of O1, but I’m not sure about that. 15. 1:12:03. Sephiroth starts laughing. We see Cloud looking at him from O1, confused more than anything else. We see glimpses of Cloud’s reaction in the O1 (the OG/Rebirth). What I personally think happens here, is that like he again experiences his visions of her death, only this time in more detail, because O1 and O2 overlap. Aerith tells him “Its okay”. (Previous two steps are somewhat hard to explain with words, but look at the color-coding, and you will understand, what happens where). 16. 1:13:00. The rest of the party arrives. They were not at the Destiny Crossroads, and the destiny is not changed for them. They obviously perceive the O2. From here, watch carefully, how Aerith’s body is positioned. At 1:13:07 she looks like she was on her side (look at the legs), but (was?) turned around. Sephy does the villain explanation. 17. 1:14:10. Cloud lays down Aerith on her back. Notice that, and notice the position of her hands. White Whispers circle around them. Light barrier separates Cloud, Aerith and the Whispers from the rest of the party. Sephiroth also seems to be outside the barrier. 18. Series of fights ensue. As they progress, Cloud meets Zack, they fight together, Sephiroth splits words again, Zack screams: "Cloud! Save her"! and gets back… somewhere. Probably Z3. Z(?) gets destroyed by the Meteor after his fight with Sephiroth Reborn. Zack is saved by Aerith. He literally breaks the 4th wall by looking at the camera and saying "Time to say goodbye. For now. Seeya". Seeya Zack. 19. Cloud fights Sephiroth in his One-Winged Angel form together with Aerith. She thanks Cloud for "what he did there". This is likely a hint, that this is a OG (future self) Aerith. 20. 1:56:10. White Whispers circling around Aerith. Notice the positioning of the body. Party approaches. Notice the positioning of the body. Cloud approaches. Notice the positioning of the body and hands. Could be a coincidence, but she looks like somebody lying in bed. Cloud asks her to wake up. She does. For the duration of the scene Cloud and Aerith are separated from the rest of the party by the bright light barrier and the Whispers. 21. Mourning scene after the burial. Cloud sees Aerith. Previously I was unsure about the fate of Aerith from R and thought that the “whisper retcon” happened, but I no longer think that’s the case. 22. Glenn/Rufus scene. We learn that it was Sephiroth all along behind the Wutai retaining some of its military strength and sovereignty (it was conquered and turned into a resort to humiliate them in the OG). That’s a major deviation from the plot. 23. Zack scene. "Who's to say they can't unite again"? 24. Tiny Bronco scene. Cloud is able to interact with Aerith. He sees the rift in the sky, similar to the one Zack saw, and he saw when he was on a “dream date” with Aerith. The rest of the party does not see the rift.

i loved it when Aerith says to Cloud to take care of himself.. its like the devs looked back on the other games and said, "what can we do to improve Cloud's mental health?" 😭 especially after advent children, I'm glad heard that in this timeline

Am I the only one who thinks that Arieth moved Zack to the timeline that Cloud and Company are in right now? If that's the case, then Zack is going to have Shinra back up from the Turks and will be able to work with Yuiffe to end the war. Plus, it really messes up the plan that Sephiroth has since Zack is an unounted for wildcard in this timeline.

Cloud laughing like SEPHIROTH gave me chills to the bone... what wrong with him?...

Ending the last fight with Firework Blade was just *chef’s kiss* so perfect.

I’ve wondered, assuming this was sephiroth the gang faces off, why is he dividing and battling the gang. What’s with the multiple incarnations? What’s with meteor? Some ideas: 1. Sephiroth calls upon his various incarnations to battle in this world. He knows the gang is stronger together so he quickly decides to split up the gang. But knowing he isn’t at full strength, he decides he needs to call upon various past/future incarnations to beat them simultaneously. It’s why all cloud, the gang, and Zach are so critical to the battle . If either one fails, then sephiroth can focus more on each of them. 2. Aerith is clearly helping each party. Cloud by appearing to him, Zach by protecting him and the gang. 3. Aerith is correct that sephiroth didn’t succeed all the way and he genuinely shows signs of annoyance, surprise…he didn’t expect Aerith to a)survive? Or b)accept her fate, OR c)believe that Zach, cloud or the gang could ever beat him now. Remember, sepy IS STILL NOT AT FULL POWER, he is still recovering… 4. Did Zach gets sent back to the doomed world and hence meteor? Not sure. The church could be any incarnation of aerith’s church. And Zach’s world didn’t seem to mention any sign of a meteor approaching before he escaped sepiorth’s trap. And the church seems to be..in air or some kind of reality plane? Regardless it’s representing one aspect of sepy’s famous attack. But we do know that while Zach did help beat this version of sorority he didn’t stop meteor which is exactly what happened in the OG. Basically meteor unleashed cannot be stopped so it’s possible that Zach ended up back on the alternative world and sorority, after killing that physical body of aerith called meteor.

Don’t overthink it. Everyone’s reactions clearly show Aerith died

You know, I am beginning to wish there was a way to actually also save Sephiroth. He is a victim of madness and things outside his control that made him loose faith in people and life. Wish there could be a way to return him to his real self. A honorable warrior, a leader, a friend.

I still hate the new whisper / time plot. But Hell Cloud & Zack fighting together was extremely cool.

Next game is about growing the white materia. She toke out the power so Cloud can make the White Materia his own as he power it up. Then he can fight the Black Materia's influence and change fate

The amount of comments claiming that Aerith being 'alive' but a ghost is bs and 'bad' clearly haven't played the original. Sephiroth and Aerith both are highly powerful magic users with high attunements to the lifestream given A) Sephiroth literally fell into into it, and refused to simply die, instead using his JENOVA cells to influence and push things in his direction. B) Aerith is able to cast Holy and stop Meteor well after her death. And this isn't even considering Advent Children with Sephiroth causing GeoStigma and Aerith curing it. The presentation of the scenes' is admittedly a little hard to follow, and can be a bit confusing, but the end result is Aerith making herself visible to Cloud and Cloud alone while the rest of the party mourns her, essentially trying to keep Cloud in check for as long as she's able mentally so he can move on and stop Sephiroth. Assuming the 3rd games' events leading up to the first visit of the Northern Crater play out as they did originally (which for the record, 80% if not a little bit more of the core story here stuck to the events of the PSX game) we can expect to see Sephiroth fully making use of a now 'dead' Aerith to rip that mental band aid right off and play Cloud like the 'puppet' he is.

I have a gut feeling that both Aerith and Sephiroth are from the future/different timelines and that in the 3rd game, all the living characters are going to come together to stop Sephiroth somehow. From the way I see it, it will probably take place in Timeline 3 (Timeline 1 is the original one with the “Hound” Stamp, Timeline 2 is Zack’s timeline where he was pulled from which has the “Terrier” Stamp, and Timeline 3 is the one where Zack, Biggs are and where Cloud and Aerith have a date with Sephiroth coming in which has the “Bulldog” Stamp in 35:14) since it’s where all the characters have converged somehow at some point and where the “reunion” and convergence of worlds might happen (and from the way things are going, remade in Sephiroth’s image).

Gotta wait 4 more years for the next one ❤

Please I need Zack and Aerith be given a happy ending in the third please please T_T

I kinda understand the ending design. SE needed to approach the emotional peak of the OG, yet if they continue their multiverse and defying destiny plot (seems so, and I'm entirely OK with that), they needed to add ambiguity, and could not do the faithful retelling of the Aerith's death (it would not fit the narration, at least for now) or immediately describe it as averted (it would have destroyed the emotional impact). As it is, it's a good cliffhanger. Not perfect, but good, whatever the purists think. But I think they placed enough hints about what's going on. And it seems that we are still in the "defying destiny" realm. The fate of every character will be truly finalized only in part 3.

UM so with the "I'm waiting cloud" and then the exact same sequence with the meteor and Whispers flowing into Sephiroth again, are they implying that like the endings of the games are happening simultaneously or something? Like, that TIME means nothing in the lifestream or something, so what we heard in the first game was actually an echo of the ending of THIS GAME? Like it's some timeless moment/realm?

They gave us so much but one last thing Id ask for is Angeal being with them when they held their swords to their heads and recited that line together.

How does the zack charge attacks work is it the higher the charge the stronger the abilities damage? Or does it also add more animations to the attack at different levels?im kinda curious

So something i felt was worth pointing out Cloud still has no idea about his own backstory or zacks story He didnt get the moment to talk to Zack at all, which would've thrown off the timing of certain events The only, only detail cloud could grasp to throw off original events happening is if he noticed zack was wielding the buster sword too, and his brain would likely scramble together an explanation for it anyways Basically, him and zack fighting together was pure fanservice, and doesnt prevent original payoffs from happening down the line

makes me wonder, *what if kingdom hearts cloud is remake/rebirth cloud*, a version of him on a seemingly endless journey to cleanse the remnants of Sephiroth lingering within himself? that’d explain the conversation him and Aerith had in Kingdom Hearts 2 before he left to go after Sephiroth imo….

Why i thought, the Aerith that has died is the one that gave Cloud the white materia cause she said "goodbye" and looks like sephiroth gonna kill her in church. And during impaling scene, its like swapping memories using white materia, the aerith that has empty white materia is survived and stay in another universe as she mentioned "2nd home" in ending while aerith that has lost white materia is dead in the scene instead. The party is sad, but Cloud seems like understood and keep it cool move forwards. Aerith continue to save the world and cloud party jobs to stop sephiroth. I could assume that Cloud mental state is recovering as Red also feels the present of our Aerith. I will expect 3rd game she still playable, i love her range skill during combat.

So the merger of worlds caused Aerith to die? And Cloud’s actions would’ve led to a new timeline but due to the merger by Sephiroth, it rendered it null.

Is it just me or does it seem like there are three different wills at work here, you got Sephiroth with his shtick, then you got the arborators, and it also seems like the life stream itself has something going on.

I get it now. Totally get it. "Even if you fall in love with me, none of this is real." ~Aerith Not the aerith from this FFVII world but another parallel FFVII world. Some how Sephiroth has disrupted the timeline. This aerith who can appear from one timeline to another. Or this is the "actual aerith" from that timeline. Now has become more powerful from the life stream to follow in between timelines to stop the corruption. I swear she is a gutsy girl to challenge Sephiroth on her own knowing how pwerful he is. But she knows the timeline. "7 seconds till the end. Time enough for you perhaps. But what will you do with it lets see" ~Sephiroth What do you know we dont? What awaits us in the next journey? We shall see.

That Jenova lifeclinger fight is frickin epic

Only Cloud can see Aerith spiritually and the dimensional rift. The emotional breakdown on her original death remains unchanged for everyone else except Cloud who finds peace towards his true goal. What bothers me is that Vincent remains entirely quiet after the party left the ancient Cetra capital. He knew what was going on and feign ignore the entire time (The whole incident reminds him of failing Lucrecia and preventing Jenova Project). Professor Hojo's(The true villain of the entire FF7 Compilation) schemes only worsen compared to the original and Rufus figured out he's a mere puppet earlier after killing Glenn/whisper. So far Part 3 looking to tie up everything and the split in the timelines. I think SE should cover Vincent's POV as a DLC story just like Yuffie's in Remake Intergrade as he has alot of ground to cover in the Remake trilogy and his vendetta against Prof. Hojo without sabotaging Cloud's POV in the main story. Cid should have been playable in Rebirth main story though....

I am absolutely dreading this fight on Hard Mode! I'm currently on Chapter 11 playing as Cait Sith on HM and also not looking forward to Vincent! I'm going to try to hammer him with Debuffs hoping it works just as good as it did on Normal!!

Just when you think we've lost Zack for the last time, he comes back to fight along cloud, then gets abruptly taken again, has a closure fight with Sephiroth in Aeriths church and then says "Guess this is goodbye" okay so he's passing on then ".......for now" so he's still in the game! Falls into a white void, presumably the Lifestream says "See ya!" and vanishes. DAMN TEASE! Reappears in the church waking up like it was all a dream and hinting he'll reunite with Cloud again. Good Lord😮‍💨 Man Square Enix out here dragging our hearts through torture like Mrs Puff dragging SpongeBob through Educational Television

I think towards the end that Aerith has turned her empty white materia into a kind of summoning materia. Using that and possibly Cloud himself as an anchor to allow herself to still effect the world after her "death". She may of physically died but that doesn't make her outright dead. Remember how many times Sephiroth has cheated death in this series

Now wouldn't it be great in part 3 if Cloud, Zack and then angeal fight sephiroth, its like the sword is out to get him lol I would like to know however what was the 'edge of creation' and the '7 seconds to the end, time enough for you' line Sephiroth used in remake, did we ever find out what that was all about?

This is a perfect remake they try to give each character some closure and happy ending even if some might died but the endless possibility of world make it possible for brighter future like zack alive? even if we never know in which world he reside or if even exist cause it still the same world but different path which we can see the ending of it soon

remake ended in a hopeful way, people we thought had died and were meant to have died we saw survive or were hinted to have lived. rebirth ended in the worst possible results for the world. double black materia. the white materia was not only made colorless by the whispers but also turned dark by cloud. and the failure to actually save aerith. and cloud not being a coma only makes it more impossible for him to be cured of sephiroth's corruption. they sure do know how to make is suspenseful

I just bought the game 3 days ago, got the stuff installed but haven’t played it yet as I wanna finish ff16 first which I got a little before buying ff7 rebirth, my point is I don’t need to see the boss battle, it would kill the excitement
