Final Fantasy V Retrospective - A delicious meal 

What a great game! What were some of your favorite aspects of FFV and how long after 1992 did you first play it?

I first played this before an English Translation patch was actually available and I muddled through the first two dungeons, figuring out what items were by trial and error, and had a little notepad near me with the Japanese->English meanings and it was... tough. Once there was an English patch though, I managed to play the whole thing and it was great.

I played the fan translation and haven't come back to it since, I should give FFV another go sometime soon. :)

I played FF5 around 1993-1994. My neighbor was Japanese and imported it. I got hooked by FF4 so I was hyped there was another installment of the series. With try and error I finished it eventually.Of course I had no clue about the story. Around 1998-2000 gave it another shot on emulator with a translation patch. Felt the same about the story. It felt for me rather underwhelming. Gameplay and music wise it’s still a masterpiece. Still I prefer 4 and 6. In special in regard of the story.

Unfortunately, jobs never really got such a spotlight again in the main series, but 5 basically became the blueprint anytime SE wanted to make job focused side games. Im even pretty convinced that the Bravely series is just a spiritual progression of what 5 laid out, theres just too much similarity to ignore.

Love the game. I invite everyone to try a 4JF (four job fiesta) of the game, it lets you discover how deep the system is. Not even superbosses are imune to every status. There are bosses weak to sleep, to poison, to break, to death, to berserk, to silence, to love. You can play pokemon with one job, or hunt for blue magic with another. Even without a thief, a time mage or mediator, you can access rare steals with thief's dagger+wonder wand and white wind/mighty guard with dancing dagger. Don't have float for Titan or Gilturtle ? Have a bird cast it on you. Have you ever played in world 2 with Summoner+Equip axes ? Gaia hammer + Gaia gear ? Or released a goblin or a shield dragon ? Cast Bearaga on Byblos ? Killed bosses with math ? Berserker is usually bad, but do you know when it's really good (very hard bosses like Archeoavis and Crystal Seals become easy). Also Jackanapes... FF5 is the most replayable FF ever. Solo challenges are a bit tedious (Karlabos, Byblos, Soul Cannon and world 2 Exdeath really aren't balanced for it) but fiestas are really doable (without multi berserkers). Decent grinding spots at every point in the game if you don't find a solution with your current levels, elixir farming, etc. The GBA bonus content is the only moment where a "no encounter" gear/ability would have felt welcome, as 80% of your time is spent fighting random enemies designed to not be trivial with endgame Freelancers and Mimes. The bosses are really challenging, and you feel pride at vanquishing Archeodemon, Enuo and Neo-Shinryu. (Or smug when cheesing Archeodemon ;)
