23:40 - While this figure Steven holds up initially looks like Cloud, I'm pretty sure it's actually a character named Hero from an old famous webcomic called RPG WORLD, drawn by Ian Jones-Quartey who was a storyboard artist who worked on Steven Universe. Hero's design was literally a Cloud knockoff design which looks almost exactly like that action figure. So Ian was referencing his own webcomic character, which itself was referencing Cloud.
I reckon if they do make another FF7 compilation title in the future it will be called Final Crisis and it will wrap up all the loose ends from every title like the fate of humanity at the end of FF7 and the Gensis cutscene at the end of Dirge of Cerberus.
It's shame 5 Wutai bosses speech differences was lost due to translations. Also Chekhov was a doctor too. Maxim Gorky is XX century author. Stanislavsky more like director but probably when he plays he do it by own system which was popular to this day and actor like Daniel D Lewis, Di Caprio etc practice that.
A couple things that can only be obtained through insane amounts of grinding: Vincent’s overflow glitch. 65,535 kills- allows you to one-shot *almost* every enemy in the game with his Death Penalty weapon, including Emerald Weapon. Mastering Underwater materia. 16,777,215 AP- the equivalent of mastering 33.5 KOTR materia, and you have to hit the AP number EXACTLY, or it rolls over and resets to zero. Old man in the cave. Go to him to find out how many battles you’ve fought. Everyone knows that. But what most people DIDN’T know is that his battle ‘counter’ resets after you pass 65,535 battles. And yes, I’ve accomplished all of these feats. The old man’s battle counter has, so far, reset 22 times😉
Okay so awesome video; had plenty of things new to me as someone obsessed with FF7 since ‘97, but question…were the clips shown here from some kind of modded version?? My only issue with the Remasters has been how the new character models ‘stick out’ from the backgrounds, which were left lower-res. It doesn’t appear to look like that here, and I’m ALWAYS looking for a way to improve that! Don’t care about new difficulty levels or enemies etc, just want the damn backgrounds and characters to match, lol
Another real world reference was the fighter jet on that island which looks like a F14 Tomcat or maybe MiG 29 due to its red star. I've always been puzzled because of that
17:27 The Secret Cow Level reference is much more likely to be to the first Diablo where it was a false rumor that was popular with that game's fans. Diablo II didn't come out until 2000, three years after Final Fantasy VII.
Another fact about One Winged Angel. It was also influenced by Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. The way the song is structured like many different songs in one.
33:40 ever wondered why you're asked to select your party before jumping into Midgar, just for a PHS save point to be at the bottom when you land? This was why. The rest of your party were originally not going to survive the Midgar raid. This is also _probably_ why you can't do the Wutai sidequest on disc 3, since Yuffie either would've been dead, or in your party and they couldn't do it with just 2 people. This idea went pretty far into development.
1. I wonder if some of those unofficial Famicom bootlegs are like certain ROM hacks and use memory mappers that aren't compatible with most emulators and/or real hardware?? With the English & graphics patch or without, that FF7 Famicom joint won't work on the Virtual Console emulator of my 3DS or N2DSXL. 2. Why the bloody hell did they keep changing the lyrics for One-Winged Angel!? The original "was PERFECT...PERFECT. Everything, down to the last...minute detail!" Also, I forgot who it was, but there's a RU-vid video where someone did the instrumental of the song using the Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum sound font, set to a picture of Sinnoh Champion Cynthia...who ironically & hilariously has a very Sephiroth-like single black feathered wing on the left side of her body.
Loki is not in FF6 o.o Also the french translation of FF7 is borderline unreadable and has odd mistranslations up the wazoo. In the main menu the Items command is referred to as 'Elements'. I'd love to make a list of mistranslations but it would be further more confusing considering the amount of already erroneous stuff in the english version. They did translate Cloud's sword properly as Bastard Sword though. Point 0.0001 for the french translation I guess.
Honestly, this game the base game is just such a slog to go through. You're hanging onto a thread, that thread being the One or two actually hard battles but you have to go through essentially hours of "mini games" to progress the fucking story. From timed button presses, to .. other timed button presses, like why couldn't FF7 devs add timed hits to the game. You have all this stuff that requires engagement from the player but then combat boils down to ... press X. Legend of dragoon has an amazing combat system, why the fuck was that not considered for ff7 ??? Have it to where the player can choose, if you want to play the boring base game the way it is then sure but the game just has aged like fine milk dude. Half of the games secrets just boil down to rythem games, like when you're doing the march. I bet not many people knew what you get for, 85% vs 15% or 100, because most of us are playing through once and you can't really reliably save before any of the minigames or you have to go back multiple hours .. so is a no brainer, most of us got like 13% approval, its not like you get anything useful from it just another "grab all x of this item for 100% completion" the devs made this game extremely easy to miss things so players have to do multiple runs, jelps pad total played time.
Aries and Aerith are BOTH wrong. It should be pronounced Aerith but spelled Areth (anagram for earth) but people pronounced it Areeth which is even worse 😅so they added an I
Jenova is based off of John Carpenters: The Thing. A shape shifting alien that disguises itself as a local and sows doubt to turn them against each other
I remember pointing this out on either something like a Reddit, or if it was even longer ago, then like a message board lol, and the response was essentially…crickets, or outright denials/“I highly doubt that” type comments. I completely agree though; I didn’t get around to seeing “The Thing” until later on (like ‘05 or so) but once I did, Jenova was what I immediately thought of. Everything you pointed out, even the way it’s described as essentially crashing to earth and then being buried in a ‘geological stratum’ in the process, then uncovered by researchers who don’t realize the danger of what they’ve dug up and in fact mistaken it for something else, something benign, until it’s too late…it was actually a really cool nod, imo. On a side note, it’s kind of interesting how Sephiroth gets all the attention when Jenova is really the thing at the center of it all.
Couple of things I'd add: -the lyrics for One Winged Angel come from Carmina Burana, an old collection of poetry. This one is pretty well known but I didn't hear it mentioned in the video (or maybe I got distracted when you did). -FF14 has a raid called Singularity Reactor where you basically fight the Knights of the Round. I'm reasonably certain that each of the knights is equipped in the same manor as the ones in the FF7 summon but I could be wrong on that. I haven't played FF14 in years but back in the day I used to do that one just for funsies, and I still occasionally pull up a vid of it, because it's so damn cool.
Thanks! Already released 5 videos, but they're very old. Like this one, I do plan to remake them all. Check the know the facts play list if you're interested.
@@BlackSailPass_GuitarCovers They are but the main songwriter of the band is a huge FFVII fan, and all three songs are connected so it's definitely a reference. He did a great cover of Bombing Mission under the artist name Bulb as well!
Learning that the Japanese was "Aerith" made me so happy when I was a kid because of the connection to Kabbalah. Sephiroth's name means numbers (maybe a reference to the reunion and the clones) and Tifa and Aerith are references to the 6th sephiroth in the kabbalistic tree of life "Tifareth" meaning "Beauty". And supports the love triangle in the game of Cloud, Tifa and Aerith.
When somebody states they're going to tell me a few things about FF7 that I don't know, I see that as a CHALLENGE. I've played that game for probably 1000 hours being conservative about it, probably longer than that in all reality, and have an almost encyclopedic understanding of the game. But, well done, you managed to tell me a few things I didn't know, if not about aspects of the game itself, at the least about numerous random facts aligned to it. Transcendental to it. So I must doff my proverbial cap as one obvious geek might do to another.
Same this vid taught me a few things, I was going to make a similar comment. And I've been through every single byte, literally, of the English PAL and NTSC PS1 releases.
_“Great special thanx to you, ARIKO. From your husband, HIDEJI”_ has just got to be one of *the best* instances of something so extraordinarily Japanese-sounding that I have ever heard in my life. It's also very sweet and cute 😌 haha *_“Great special thanx”_* ...oh god, yes 💀
Interestingly, I always thought "Aeris" was intentional since it's pronounced like Eris, the Greek goddess of discord and *Strife*. "Aerith" just sounds like you've got a lisp when you say it out loud.
Nope, the true name's always been Aerith. As in Aerith Gainsborough. When you think about it, rolls off the tongue better than Aeris would, when you say the full name.
So that chocoball commercial was something I vaugely remembered from over 10 years ago and could not find or even begin to know what to search for. And here it is. In plain sight as I played through my favorite FF games.
This is complete speculation, but Bizzaro Sephiroth may have been a case of the translators misreading "rebirth" as "reverse", as both are pronounced the same in Japanese. Bizzaro may just mean reverse like how the superman villain Bizzaro is like a reverse superman.
pretty sure there's a reference to Greek letters somewhere too. Think it's displayed in game at a station of sorts ... ahh need to look into this and find it. I had a screenshot of it ages ago but now long gone.
"Death comes suddenly and there is no notion of good or bad" "We didn't kill off all these other characters because it would dilute the meaning of Aerith's death" While not directly contradictory, I feel like these ideas do conflict with each other. Ascribing an intended "meaning" to death is also something that only happens in media, not in real life. People search for that meaning in real life, but as far as we can tell, there is none. Death is indiscriminate and without mercy. By the very nature of intending Aerith's death to *have* a meaning, I feel they diluted their own stated goals somewhat.
Not many talk about it, but back in the days was FF7 and FF8 really hated by many gamers, parents and stores that sell videogames. Gamers hated it because they wanted action, kids and many adults was confused or bored by all the menus. Parents hated the game because their kids stopped to play the games after less that few hours (in some cases even some minutes) and their kids wanted a new game. Stores hated the games because many people who bought the games wanted their money back or an other game as exchange. I have talked back in the days to over 100 people who played both games, I have only met just 1 other person who had completed FF7 and that was a person who worked in a video game store and only 2 persons who had beaten FF8 ... the same worker from the video game store and the other was a person who worked in a comic shop. I was back in the days a big fan of both games and it was always a mystery to my why the Final Fantasy games was so hated.
You’ve been swinging in the wrong circles man I’ve completed 8 like ten times and 7 countless as the story’s so good. I remember when 8 was released by Xmas it’s all I asked for and I got a full game pack, memory card tshirt squalls necklace and the game. It is a life choice liking this game series but it’s not hard to find people who have completed it! How are you liking rebirth? I’m fucking obsessed 87 hours gameplay since release me 🎉x
@@RoxanneLloyd-x1u I still haven't played Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, because I got not a PS5 ... also I play at the moment too many other games. One other thing with the new FF7 game is that it comes in parts and it could take over 20 years till the whole story is finished. I think the new FF7 parts are on a much higher level than the originals ...... I can imagine me spending over 200 hours in each part. ^^
@@sbencic4147 It depend to the people you talk to ..... and about: "it was instantly loved" - sure but only loved by people who was jrpg fans and by game magazines. Roleplaying games with turnbased combat was and are still niche games that don't apeal to the majority of players.
There was absolutely zero reason for them to do that. They would have displeased fans of the OG due to how sacred it is for many, and the older mechanics simply wouldn’t have captivated a newer generation (as much as I enjoy it personally), nor generated nearly as much hype and sales. In its current form - a sequel - the FF7 OG is more essential to the overall story than ever before. AND it’s still allowed to stand alone, not being viewed as the “old/outdated version” from newcomers and more casual fans. There was no need to remake perfection. The majority of us purposely didn’t/don’t play with the PC mods because we believe the original graphics were essential to the original’s atmosphere.
@@jthen8454 Nah. It was fun to discover that for oneself while playing Remake. The game did just fine, as is Rebirth doing just fine, without catering to that request.
@@dgates8097ff7 og mods are insane. I disagree xD. Og was great. 10 outa 10 easily. That becomes a 12 outa 10 with voice mods and better graphics. I do agree with you about remake though. No need to remane perfection. So istead try tk bring something new with the old story and i think theyve done that beautifully in rebirth.
Time to pour petrol on things... It's Aerith. People that desperately cling to Aeris are narcissists that cannot be wrong. It's Aerith as a play on the word "earth", since Aerith is a Cetra with ties to the planet.
It's Bowser/King Koopa and Peach/Princess Toadstool all over again. Both can be okay, though. It can be canonically one thing but it's okay to have head canon too.
