Plot twist: the final mother cristal was your freakin heart.

There's a line Clive says in the game, to a hostile NPC, that he understands the weight of an oath because he knows how hard they are to keep. The torture of failing, the desperation of keeping, and the exaltation of absolution. Clive's been through it all. Sleep well, Clive.

My first final fantasy game and idc it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Looking forward to play ff7 remake and then rebirth.

Here's an alternative interpretation of the ending - the star implies Clive's fire power. In the beginning of the end scene, Clive lifted up his hand trying to cast a spell to confirm the magic in the world was gone for good, and since magic no longer exist in the world, therefore, the fire faded away, and so did the star...but I believe Clive and Jill end up living happily, low-key, together, forever. 🥺

Im fine with both possibilities of clive living or dying because him dying after everything he did for everyone deserves a heroic death with honor. But him surviving and getting back with jill means jill is happy forever

I know its open ended intentionally, but it's HOW Metia (the red star) lost their glow that has me the most intrigued; the Star flashed a little before going out. It didn't just fade immediately. Perhaps one last wish was granted? Perhaps the blast Clive sent into space destroyed the star, but it took that long for it to show visually? Ultimately, I think Jill's wish didn't come true, as Clives wish for a world without Magic and, more importantly, one where people had to rely on themselves. That must have extended to miracles granted by Metia. The sun rising brought Jill relief, as it reminded her that that Clive would always save her. But that doesn't nessesarily means he would physically save her. He saved the world, and by extension saved Jill as well.

Do not worry... Clive survived , rest in piece Joshua and Dion

No crazy bombastic ceremonies nor reunions, it’s just… one poor Clive lying on a beach watching a starry sky hoping he’s created a future for his loved ones with this touching finale piece. What an amazing experience. I’m glad I chose this as my first Final Fantasy game.

Just finished the game and ended up bawling my eyes out for 15 minutes. The mini flashback to Clive and Joshua's childhood, and that last scene with Torgal and Jill looking towards the sunrise both fucking killed me. It's been a long time since any kind of media has evoked these kinds of emotions from me. 10/10. I'm so glad I played this game.

You know as I get older I’m always scared movies and games won’t make feel things anymore. Kingdom Hearts II ending made me cry so much. Only a few other games have done that for me through out my 30 years of being alive. So thankful this one resonated with me so profoundly. Cried and felt all the emotions for this game and ending.

This scene hit me so hard when I wasn't even expecting it. Seeing the Metia star die was what made me start crying. I am a firm believer that Clive survived the ordeal but the thought that he really died without seeing his loved ones again one last time almost broke me

I just got the platinum in the game, what a crazy ride it was. Loved the game and the ending destroyed me. Cannot wait for FF7 Rebirth, super hyped. This song is so beautiful and fitting for the ending, I hope Clives pulls through as the sunrise for Jill and makes it back to her. Would love DLC expanding upon it and showing what happened to Leviathan.

I think this game's cemented itself as one of my favorite of all time; right up there with FFX. Beautiful story, amazing combat, unique and interesting villains, and those fucking Eikon fights were nuts. I love that we finally have a team with some balls willing to push the boundaries and deliver a story that can resonate so fiercly with us. Good fuckin shit Yoshi P.

All signs line up and point to Clive surviving and returning to Jill. He took on Joshua's name and wrote "Final Fantasy" 1. It's not the first time Clive took on another person's name. 2. Harpocrates gives Clive a quill, asking him to put down the sword and take up the pen once he defeats Ultima. -"The only Fantasy here is yours. And we shall be it's Final witness!" Nobody except Clive and Ultima were there to witness that line. The name of the book is "Final Fantasy." 3. Clive is the narrator of the story. He narrates the beginning and the ending of the game. "And thus did our Journey end." The Platinum trophy is called "The Chronicler" with the subtext "And thus did our Journey end." 4. Clive is right handed. His left hand turned to stone. 5. Metia doesn't fade because Clive "dies". It fades because Clive destroyed all magic in the world. This also explains why Jill can't sense him anymore and assumes he's dead. 6. There's a scene where Jill explains how when the dawn breaks, she knows he'll return to her. 7. Part of Clive's character arc is learning how to save himself. This is directly called out multiple times by other characters, including Jill. 8. The End Credits song "Moongazing" spells out Clive returning to Jill. Clive Alive.

Not gonna lie, I shed a couple of tears when Joshua died i was not ready for that at all, that hit me personally as im sure it did a lot of players. I really felt Clive's pain in that scene. Which just shows how brilliant written and acted out this whole game is.

Seeing the Metia Star died down + Gav broke down realizing he "lost" 2 Cids broke me down everytime, I can't stop crying watching it over and over

The ending of this game was genuinely “perfect” I had not a single problem with this game truly a masterpiece in the art this will go down as my #1 game of all time no game thus far has made my heart hurt for every single character, as the ending came I laid back and just sat quiet with a single tear down my face in silence with this song playing truly an unparalleled experience thank you for the adventure

This’ll be a lengthy read. But with Yoshi-P saying this ending is up to interpretation I’ll give my thoughts on it. Dion is dead. He flew into Origin knowing it was a one way trip for him. Weighed down by the guilt of destroying his empire, killing his father, he wanted to repay all those lives he wronged by the only way he felt was right: death. But not before he took the evil that plagued his homeland with him. He earned that warrior’s death. Joshua survives. Yes, even he states that the Phoenix cannot bring people back from the dead. But when paired with Ultima’s power of creation, Clive could very well posses the power to bring at least one back from death. And he would gladly bring Joshua back. Clive is alive. He shouldn’t be, after using Ultima’s power that his body could not handle to destroy Origin and heal Joshua. Which is why his left hand was beginning to petrify. Jill’s heartfelt wish to Metia was heard and granted. The star fading out not signifying Clive’s life force, but rather performing a miracle and ensuring Clive survives. He may be down an arm, but he lives. Jill then sees that dawn is rising and she stops crying because she knows that dawn always comes, and Clive will always find a way back to her.

Ah Final fantasy.. Has a keen knack for putting songs in their games that resonate with you for the rest of your life.

What a legendary Ending to a legendary Story…

I think Joshua and Dion are really dead, but all the things in the sidequests-especially Jill's and Harpocrates's-just before Origin really make me think Clive survived and wrote that Final Fantasy book under Joshua's name.

This song is too beautiful! I faithfully believe that Clive didn't die at the end menaged to get back to Jill, and furthermore I believe that Joshua Rosfield who wrote the book "Final Fantasy" is the son of Clive and Jill who received that name in honor of his uncle

I've played a lot of FF over my 30 years and I think this might be the best one yet. Story was so captivating and the ending was so beautiful and bittersweet. Could have filled a glass with all the fluids I lost in that last 40 minutes. It's actually difficult to play through new game+ because I feel genuinely broken.

My first raw experience with an ff game. I started with 7 back in 2015-16, and I was there for 15's launch, but I was spoiled early on and was a couple weeks late. I made sure I picked this up day one and steered clear of any social media for the whole week, focusing only on work and this game. Actually not knowing what to expect, speculating what was going to happen as my siblings watched a good chunk of my playthrough, was a really cool experience. I love all of the ff games I've played (6,7, 10 mainly) but I knew what to expect cause they were all 20+ year old games. I was not expecting to go from cheering hype as Clive namedrops the franchise (genuinely had to pause and take a lap around the room) , to crying within 20 minutes as the credits rolled. Its the only series that can do that for me, and I'm glad I was able to experience 16 the same way people got to experience the classics. This is gonna stick with me for a long time

It’s so unfair.. after everything that transpired, just to be forgotten, not even granted the freedom of a hard earned victory, just silence along a beach bathed by stars and oversee by the Moon. It’s sadder the more you think about it, it’s too beautiful and yet so sad, never once could joy truly find him but that if the greater good he taught he could bring… Joshua.. Dion… Cid… Theodore… so many amazing people… Clive… just the sight of his hand turning giving away at the curse break me… but him accepting it destroyed me completely.. Jill… Gab.. Otto.. Torgal.. everyone knew they weren’t coming… it’s just too sad, so the world lost magic yet gained freedom, a freedom earned by a history that now is but a fairy tale.. Final Fantasy. It’s clear that at the very least, there’s plenty of reason to cry, so it’s okay 😢

Huh... it's like old Playstation FF games after 7 where the leading lady's theme (or atleast the love theme) gets lyrics in the ending. That's a nice touch.

I think the very end scene hints that clive survived but I love the idea that it is open. The terms of his life and his death are his own and I think it is purposefully vague to show that lives are owned by the individual. It is not about whether he lived or died but rather that he got to act within his will. How it ends does not matter in this case for the journey of free will was the goal.

The well written Shakespearean style of tragedy this game has is unbelievable. I cannot praise CBU3 enough, what an incredibly talented group of devs. They deserve a nice long vacation after all this hard work.

This reminded me of FF X ending when ppl realized Tidus died. X-2 coming out cheapened the original ending tbh.

The game never needed DLC after all. It's entirety was beautiful... If there was though, I'd want nothing more than Clive and Jill reuniting with wedding bells included.

That phrase that Gav said to the newborn baby mad me tear up 😢 Gav is probably the next leader of the Hideway. He and Otto will probably continue Cid's and Clive's dream. Because as both of them mentioned. Destroying the crystal and defeating Ultima is definitely the begining of the new world that they are dreamed of.

This theme is painful to listen to. Apologies for the long read ahead: Although I would have preferred a different ending (I'm a sucker for happy endings), I went into Origin 100% expecting something sad and... that's pretty much what we got. I wish we could have seen more, I wish we could've seen where some of the characters we've met throughout this journey end up. Broke my heart to see Jill cry like that. I think her relationship with Clive was very organic and by the end it blossomed into a full romance which I hoped would persist. On the other end, there's a sort of masochistic part of me which says "it would be ok if he died. This ending is FINE." Of course... this is the part I try to drown out with the hope that Clive lives. Ultimately I feel like there's enough ambiguity to stand on either side of the discussion. For one, we don't 100% know how the progression of the Crystal's Curse works. Now, Clive used, or at least tried to pull off some magic with his hand there at the end and it sorta fizzled out. This was followed by a shot of even more of his hand petrified. To me this could mean one of two things: him trying to use magic there caused the Curse to progress further or....... it was going to progress anyways as a result of his use of Ultima's magic to destroy Origin. In the former case, if he were to stop using magic, it could be reasonably assumed that the petrification process stops right then and there and he just loses his hand. Another point of contention is the "meaning" of Metia's light fading as well as the rising sun. Early on in the story Jill says that Metia had always granted her wish of Clive making a safe return. Jill trusts that the heavens have a plan for them. It's worth noting that the star had never faded during those instances in which "her wish was granted." So it's hard to say with certainty that it fading means the wish is granted... Because it's granted wishes in the past without fading. Likewise, the rising sun, if one has done some of the late-game quests, can be taken to signify Clive's return, as Jill expresses that dawn would always come, and so would Clive. The thing about those two points, the star, and the rising sun is that... these are just attributed meanings to some phenomena in the world. It could very well mean that the light of Metia fading means squat. Likewise, a rising sun may not really hold any meaning or say anything with regards to Clive's fate. They're just natural phenomena in the game's world. At this junction you have to ask yourself... Do the devs want me to intuit a certain conclusion from this? After all, we have two conflicting set of events (Metia's light fading = Clive's death, and sunrise = Clive's safe return). I can only speak for myself, but the general vibe I am getting from the ending is that Clive is dead... That's just the vibe, though, without looking at the imagery and trying to make sense of it. The way I'd like to think it plays out is Jill sees the light of Metia fade, and she takes this to mean that Clive has passed. She runs away, distraught, however a rising sun reminds her of the words she'd spoken in that field of Snow Daisies, about how Clive would come back, as sure as dawn. I believe that this reminder does not , in her mind, confirm for her that Clive is alive, but rather instills in her a hope that he is. I think that in those brief moments in the ending, Jill is in a similar position to that of the player: she is uncertain... but hopeful. Thinking on it further, another possibility is that she also sensed his aether fade away, although THAT in particular, is not made particularly clear. The game wants us to focus on the light of Metia and the rising sun as the "elements to interpret" in that scene.

Clive lived through “killing” his brother, reuniting with him and fighting alongside him, just to watch him die in his arms. Goodness I’ve never played a game that made me want to rewrite the story. Like, at that point, Clive did just want to close his eyes and sleep for good knowing it was a job well done.

That moment the star vanishes and Jill suddenly burst in tears i lost it, i cried like i lost a child. Such a beautiful and powerful ending. Im so glad i played this game 😢

In the tarot arcana the number 16 is the tower(of babel), the fall of an old world order and the diaspora of the civilization. The 17th arcana is the star(of the Magi going to Jerusalem) symbol of hope and a new radiant future, enlightenment, body and mind converting to one point (toward the light). I guess it is no coincidence this song called like so. The next chapter of Final Fantasy will likely be directed to this new path. What do you think? If you are confused on where is the Tower of Babel in the game it is not just one “tower” the crystals are the tower(s) of Babel.

A spectacular and beautiful story, at the same time heartbreaking and emotional to the end. The love theme in FF16 is pure poetry. As a FF fan for 20+ years, I can share that this is truly a Final Fantasy experience (I embrace the technical differences it introduces in contrast to previous FF games). I am feeling grateful for the developers and Square Enix, as it is clearly shown they put their hearts into it. I am very much hopeful for a DLC in the near future. It seems to be likely, based on a recent interview with the producer Yoshi-P (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1DXjeuazCSo.html). Keeping fingers-crossed that Clive (and even Joshua and Dion) live. Those lads are tougher than wild chocobos.

Despite how useless it is to fight each other whether he is alive or not, I guess it is exactly what makes the ending "live" and how everyone is *free* to belief whichever ending it might be. I personally like that. Btw if he erased magic, will bearer curse still exist without aether channeling? Also he was still able to conjure something (the blue light), even if it then vanished, which means magic was still kinda there when his fingers turned into stone. Chances are, during then aether was still there. However will that progress? Or is the realm's former rule only applied to him, as he exhausted everything? If aether has been erased, wouldnt Jill (Dominant who can sense other Dominant's aether) also lost her ability to know if the others are still alive or not? I believe she felt the aether disappearing, thus her realizing loss of the lives of the other three on Origin OR the loss of aether itself (whichever ending you believe in)? Also in a way, Clive in the end did not "grow" for he did not "save himself" is what I was thinking, if he indeed died. From Cid in early part of the game to the later half of the game, what with Jill's conversation and Joshua hitting on his face, the people closest to him keep saying to him to "save yourself" and not to 'bear everything alone'. If he died for the world, it kind of instills the fact that until the very end Clive took everyone's burden with him and never saved himself. But that is subject to discussion.

I dunno who else remembers the whole crystal theme of the past mainline FF games, but this feels like an apt conclusion to all that. Fabula Nova Crystallis. I know it started out as 13 and its spin offs, and then we got 15 out of it. I like to think this is Yoshi P's way of a deep, respectful nod to all that. Feels like it to me anyways. Looking forward to 17 and what themes they play into next.

This OST is absolutely sublime

The most important side quests are "Priceless" along with "A Tail to Tell" Both played will explain the meaning of the dawn seen end game and the book, written by cid rosfield. "A Tail to Tell" "when the day comes, I'l certainly have a lot to write about" is what clive replied to Haprocrates after his encouragement to pick up a pen. Harpocrates is all-knowing as the game claims, but opting choosing to delve into the intimacy side of pheonix and ifrit(older brother), chances it's more likely Clive. There's a point in the game where Joshua clearly stated that his eikon's power could never bring someone back to life. Clive who loves his brother more than cid, should probably have higher chances that he would honor his brother's legacy. "Priceless" In Priceless, Japanese language; On that special day when they were young, Jill recalled witnessing the flowers reaching out for the sun after the storm; similarly, Clive reached out to her and calmed her down from the "storm" the storm being that she was being ignored as a person when she overheard her marriage potential. She gains the conviction that Clive will always be there for her, no matter what (a belief that is confirmed several times in the game, with Clive first coming back to her after many years apart and then saving her in the ship). She said that's a quality she appreciates and likes about him before she confessed to him and declared him as her treasure. Therefore, end-game seeing the sun rising calmed her down and stopped her from crying any further. But, endings are arbitrary nowadays, it's a gamer's pick. cheers!
