I wish I'd seen her more. This was my third time seeing the show, after seeing Donna, then Bette. So I didn't plan to see her more than once and chose her last performance. A mistake on my part not to go earlier, but I'm glad I saw her last show.
By far the best Dolly I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Was there tonight for her last show and it was magic. Overall, six standing ovations, for Bernadette alone. I was crying from the moment she made her first entrance (and this is not my first timesaving her in the role. Seeing her on stage just does something to you no matter how many times you've seen her). But, what really got men was when she got emotional herself. By 'Before The Parade' she was visibly wiping away tears as the audience sotted and cheers for minutes at a time. Still pitch perfect, bar one break when the tears began, despite the crying and she never missed a queue. She is truly Broadway royalty and I am so honoured to have been able to bear witness to her particular brand on magic, especially tonight. (dear GOD do I hope someone bootlegged it)
I saw Bernadette on Thursday. My first Broadway show was Hello Dolly with Pearl Bailey when I was a teenager. I have seen many Dollys since (including Bette)...Bernadette is my favorite. Kudos to Victor Garber and Gavin Creek also.
I have seen MANY Dolly Levi's in my day and they are all magically extraordinary but I still enjoy and crave the original...Carol Channing who originated the role...I had the honor of seeing her in a revival and what can I say....but would have loved to have seen Bette, Bernadette et.al in the role as well...thank goodness for You Tube.😊🎶🎵
Actually, I found one of her playing Dolly. www.bilibili.com/video/av26071497?spm_id_from=333.338.__bofqi.51 Be sure you use Google Translate to translate the website.
I saw the show with Donna Murphy - she brought so much depth. I think part of it was Donna is a widow, just like Dolly and the monologues where Dolly is talking to her late husband, I felt she was talking to her own late husband. Bernadette's also a widow, so it wouldn't surprise me that she found the same level of truth to the role.
If you watch the behind the scenes dvd for Alias season 5, he has the same facial expressions and reaction after his and Jennifer Garner's final takes 😢
Yay Show Vids we got stuck In front of some out of town hick chatters. Nice audience, but we had to take turns turning around giving them nasty looks. :-(
