Tara Mines has now officially shut down production of Ore/Zinc at it's mine in Navan County Meath, the biggest Zinc mine in Europe, temporarily laying 650 workers in the process on the 5th July 2023
It comes after the company cited rising energy bills and a drop in the price of Zinc as two of the main reasons for it's decision, thus ending 46 years of operatons since 1977. A small number of employees will still be present at the mine for care and maintenance of the facility while decisions are made over the future of the mine.
If the mine is doesn't reopen then the Drogheda - Navan Branch will be very much in question as to it's future, it's is likely that Irish Rail will still operate the weed sprayer over the line for upkeep reasons but it is likely that it will close down if the Tara Mines trains do not resume operations as it was the only thing guaranteeing the lines survival.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem likely that there will ever be a resumption of passenger service on the line despite huge demand in Drogheda and Navan for such a service, the last passenger train on the line was back in 1958. There is a huge unwillingness by Irish Government and Irish Rail to ever re-establish passenger service on the Navan Branch.
The future of the Tara Mines wagons themselves is not looking good, it's very likely they will sit in storage for years before eventually being scrapped.
A very sad end to 46 years the Tara Mines trains, I really hope something is done to re-establish operations.

Nice to see the 073 got one last run on it in its proper livery. End of another era. Now its just Waterford-Ballina/Westport Freight left

And also the North Wall - Ballina IWT liner, railfreight in this country is in huge decline.

@@irishrailtrains yes, it's in bad need of a re-think, has been run down for so long. What do you think about the relaying of the Foynes line and the hopeful reopening for freight of the Rosslare to Waterford, cautious grounds for optimism??

Great video. I just seen several news articles from yesterday, saying the plan to open it back up next year.

I think the mine did temporarily shut due to low Zinc prices a few years back - once the price came back up, the mine re-opened AFAIK. We also need to get rid of radical green ideology in relation to energy prices. We should even look at nuclear power - Candu reactors or SMRs might be worth considering.

Excellent footage you managed to capture while you could Stephen! Irish Rail will certainly not be the same without them, hopefully they’ll make a miraculous return in the future

Hopefully they are not the last days of Tara Mines trains but if they are it is a great medley of videos to have.Thanks for putting them up. Do we know how many 071 s are still operational ?

I'm hoping for a miracle, but I have 13 years worth of footage in the archives if this is there's last hurrah.

all of the 071 class are operational however there are usually a few in Inchicore receiving works.

@@fivefootthreetothreefoot 082 is awaiting overhaul (in inchicore), 077 and 085 are in inchicore, 081 was last seen on a limerick - inchicore loco transfer earlier this year and 073 seems to be doing shunting in inchicore at the moment

Sad to see them go. Where can you find timetables for IÉ’s freight trains?

This is a good chance for someone to maybe do something heritage related. I've seen recently that there was a bit of a trend to import Finnish engines into England. It's not like their short of them out there. If only I had money... 🤔🤔

Nice share Stephen. Do you know when the last of Tara mines trains will run down Alexandra Road?
@irishrailtrains
@irishrailtrains Год назад
Thank you, it has already happened. The last train to traverse Alexandra Road was on the 5th of July, 2023.

its sad to see it go. but what would happen to the level crossings on the navan line? will they abandon them?
@irishrailtrains
@irishrailtrains Год назад
It's hard to say, with the main business keeping the line open now gone. It's very possible that they will abandon the line unless they try and bring passenger service, which is very unlikely.

Nothing in the Rail 2050 plan about Navan?

Am not sure but have they closed the mine itself? Or why is the freight traffic cancelled

The mine itself has been closed

Irish rail has never been too freight friendly. They abandoned. Cement traffic. Guinness traffic and many others over the years.
