Olympics came too late for Rafael , he's become old , if karate was in Olympics during his peak years, he would have won many gold's ;!

An actual karate-ka will bow to the referee and opponent regardless of the result. Rafael is an extremely good sportsman, that is about it. Karate begins and ends with respect.

This goes both ways though, and is unfortunately part of the sport. Same thing happened to Busa at 7:34, on what looked to be a perfectly delivered score. Aghayev is my favourite fighter, but in my opinion this fight was overseen well by the refs.

They didn't give a point there. Initially they flag 1 point red but then after the break and a review called by I'm guessing the blue coach they instead award a penalty for red but no point for blue. I might be missing something but the ring ref didn't award any points.

@@fergar0206 no the referee indeed gave 1 point to Luigi in that moment and he won with that 1 point. That’s why Rafael in shock looks at the 4 side referees….

@@fergar0206 and plus to that he should have given red a warning if there was some blood. And there wasn’t any (I was watching live so it was obvious) that’s why in many cases, not only here people are saying the games are unfair, so…

@@diamond3385 Luigi got 1 point later for tsuki in the clinch. The one you're referring to is the video review, which was rejected. Luigi won fair and square.

Well, Fights at this level ain't same as lower levels, Fighters here don't get touched easily , scores are less .

I thought this fight was very tight, the two competitors couldn't show anything like a karate fight. Same exact event happened to Busa at 7:34, on what looked to be a perfectly delivered score... This is WKF kumite, and unfortunately it goes both ways. The fighters understand this, and it's part of the game. These guys go back and fourth, and in this particular match it was Busa's day. Aghayev is still the GOAT of course, but one can't discredit Busa's achievements.

@@DaveGledhillSifu the reason he went off is cause when the first point was scored they showed 4 red flags meaning Rafael should have scored yuko 1 point. But main referee gives that point to blue. And he is in shock, cause he saw flags indicating he should get one… I mean I would understand his frustration. And in ceremony it was obvious the two of them have some beef going on between them

To be fair, just because Funakoshi invented the shotokan style, doesn't mean he's the truth. In fact, Funakoshi himself did change many things in karate, starting from the karategi, but I'm sure many people know about it. The point is that no matter how old, how "traditional" a style is, it will inevitably evolve. If we karateka decide to get stuck in tradition, then we shouldn't even call our art karate, nor practise it, since it's not an original martial art like boxing or wrestling

Agreed. this is sh*t. It has no relevance to the tradition, the philosophy (character development), or even the self defense aspect of traditional karate. If you're gonna put on the pads, then make it full contact. I'm glad they gave it the boot for '24 - Paris

@@dingo8babym20 All they have done in the WKF is take the scoring techniques from competition and made them, 'Who can touch the other first/fastest! With ZERO concept of the budo element! For Christ sake, if Aghayev even gets touched by a glove he DIVES on the floor to get his opponent disq...and THIS is their most famous, celebrated...'fighter'...ha ha ha!! I've been hit square in the face (pad & padless) with zuki & geri (mawashi/ura) and dropped.......EVERY time it is my spirit & attitude that told me, GET UP (ready at least to fight on....if the guy gets disq, that's up to the referee!! THESE clowns are LOOKING for a disq EVERY time....that is NOT katate-do!!) Calling them highly trained athletes is one thing...but karate-ka? Nah!!

@@gerrodmendham461 Agree. The ultimate question is, " what is your goal, here? For me, and I believe, most of JKA, ISKF, etc, the TECHNICAL goal is developing 'one punch' kill or disabling technique. Tournament kumite is where you attempt to display your understanding of that concept with an opponent. Hence, ippon kumite. Grappling, and/or short and incomplete techniques(even those which injure) are of no interest. Correct timing( eg: go no sen), speed, and form ARE. In 1 tournament that I fought in, I was literally kicked out of the 'ring' by a mae geri. I flopped around like a fish out of water! But, he was too close(knee bent), and didnt demonstrate control. I recovered, and won the match. Outsiders wouldn't get it. We do. tournaments are for gaining understanding.

I could pick out dozens of anecdotal fight over the years much like yourself Big Game, to show the massive gulf in different concepts of what WE used to compete in, and what 'passes' for tournament kumite today!! BOTH ways! One, I was fighting over in Liverpool at a Shotokan event, got through a few rounds when I met a Liverpudlian fighter....BIG lad, VERY tough, good scrap, when I attacked with a front leg sweep follow up back leg mawashi..........caught him HARD, flush on his cheek...fcvk, it hurt MY foot so god knows what it did to him......he just shrugged it off...and I was awarded ippon!! NO blood........NO diving from my opponent. He even congratulated me on a great kick! He had a footprint on the side of his face for about an hour!!! Another, I was fighting a a regional KUGB even in the team event, we were fighting a well respected team from Chester (NW England) 'Aisatsu, we lost, but I fought their Captain Charlie 'Chaz' Mackenzie, (a 'Zookeeper' by profession...and he actually had the look of a large ape.....true story that!!). I put up a reasonable performance, but he had years in experience (and toughness, as I was still a young lad and Charlie was an experienced fighter at that time!) and beat me handily, his last point, a kizami zuki, hit me hard on my left jaw!! I thought it was BUST as I couldn't talk for a while afterwards without it hurting!! My team mates thought it was hilarious to tell me the funniest jokes to see me laugh......and cry at the same time..lol. But I NEVER 'dived' on the floor, which I see REGULARLY from these clowns!! (Love your 'kicked out of the ring story'...how many times has THAT happened and it's taken the wind out of you?? But you've got up and carried on!!)
