Gary Player won his second of his three Open Championship titles in 1968.
The 97th Open Championship in 1968 welcomed 130 players from across the globe, including nine past champions, as they all hoped to win the Claret Jug.
It would be the South African who would go on to victory at after successfully beating former winners Jack Nicklaus and Bob Charles, who tied for second place. This was his fifth major of the nine he won during his illustrious career.
Here are extended highlights of Gary Players final round from Carnoustie.

Add point is modern information. Most information of Jack playing at the Open is mainly in the 1970’s after which he had lost weight and played using his mental strength at the Open. However 1968 shows his strength control of his play and significantly ahead of all other players. Jack looks like a player who would be clearly leading player in the current time. His shots at 15, 16, 17 and 18 was much better than Gary but did not hold any putt. Gary’s play was excellent and his use of a mix of wedges is similar to current players. Just great watching this.

1:00, when the announcers talked about the 10th hole, an early example of why this course is also called “car-nasty”

It only got called “Car-nasty” in 1999, when the head greenkeeper John Philp set it up like a US Open venue. Carnoustie’s a great course, but no harder than the others on the Open rota.

@@andrewrobinson8305 Then why do the players themselves routinely vote it the most difficult Open test?

Gary player is an all time great. He's one the open 3 times. His rival Tonyjacklin won 2 majors during his career the open in 1969 and the us open in 1970. Carnoustie is a really difficult coursejacklin came up short but he gained valuable experience. Then in the 1980s he guided Europe to Ryder cup glory he's a genius and a wonderful golfer as well. Respect to him.

I love these old videos. I'm only slightly older!! Its very interesting seeing the old clubhouse again - it was clearly always an eyesore before being replaced by the splendid hotel that is there now. Gary Player was revolutionary for carrying 3 wedges (@27.18) The middle wedge has a fibreglass shaft (@28.30). The voices of Peter Aliss, Mark McCormick, Dave Marr and Alex Hay made my summers, watching The Open in the late-70s and 80s on TV with my dad.

If you’ve never played Carnoustie 17 is an impossible drive you have no idea where to aim , the Byrne is everywhere.

You hit 380 down the middle with a persimmon wood and an old late 60s ball

@@CaribSurfKing1 never saw anyone come even close to 380 yds or m. With one of those woods and I used them for decades playing with good golfers…280 was a very long drive in those days. I could hit them 230-240 yds…4 marker from Australia.

At 7:40, Gay Brewer throws his cigarette on the green. I’d never seen that in professional golf.

Is this the Open where Player "hand-wedged " one out of the bunker and went on to win?
