Rounded corners on all your countertops really saves from bruised hips and bruised children's heads. I always suggest that, too, in coffee tables, etc.
Very glad you chose to put a window in that wall! I was worried it would be all closed off and you'd deprive yourself of that beautiful view and added light! :)
Just another thought...since your mom mentioned kids hitting their head on the island corners, when they make the top have them round the corners just a bit...it softens the blow.
I love your design and with the help of a viewer Debra that is awesome to give you advice and ideas. Looking good. Your Mom Brenda is awesome to also help you out ❤️❤️
Hey Abbie - Your mock kitchen looks great! One suggestion regarding electrical......make sure to place an outlet right near the top or bottom steps so you can run lit garland down your stair handrails for Christmas. Also make sure to put a few outlets outside , again, to light up your porch or put up an outside Christmas tree on your front porch or to put lit garland around your front door. Also, for your kitchen island make sure to put an outlet on the side of the island where your walking area will be.
Love open shelves, or even cabinets. When we had my husband's uncle make our kitchen cabinets he thought I was nuts having 2 cabinets with no doors. They were to the right & left of the sink. Right side all dishes(dishwasher below),left side glasses, mugs. This was in 1979. Lived in that LOG HOME for 35 YEARS.
It's all coming together amazingly. I think now you should have a wood stove incorporated into your living room area. The revelation here is your dad has the sawmill and firewood. Nothing like a snugly area with a hot fire and a steaming teapot...
Maybe do your island smaller and so you can walk around it both ways . And I would put my sink in front of your outside window. It always looks more comfortable. Keep your island for baking. And guests can hubbard around it.
Abby, I think it is going to be a fantastic kitchen! Very functional and beautiful! There is plenty of space for your dream kitchen layout! Love, love, love it! Great job to you and mom helping you get a good visual! Have a beautiful, blessed day!
Glad Deb is helping put your plan in place & not hers! & Jay taking on these projects!! Love your Family, that's the way families should be!! Although we don't see Trudy much!! Glad your Mother goes along with your craziness!🤣! Enough room to get stuff thru? Like a couch, refrigerator, piano, stove! Like it!!
What about a greenhouse window or switch with that other window so that you could walk up to it. You could put a bunch of herbs in a greenhouse window and grow your pot of lettuce in an old colander. So many things you could do. Love it!
Hope I am not too late, (been awhile since I had a chance to “tune in”) but please make sure your electrician puts outlets at the end of the bar (peninsula) and end of cabinet run, also above countertops - lights and outlets under cabinets are so very helpful and at this stage would add nothing (relatively to the cost) lights under cabinets are awesome!
Hi Abby I have a suggestion in your new kitchen layout. Put your trash can beside your dishwasher/ sink area and move your drawers over by your stove if that can be done. You will most likely prefer having the trash can by your sink wear your prepping your food so it can be thrown away quickly and easily without it dripping across the floor etc, also you may prefer your drawers near your stove because that's where your utensils will be for cooking along with your pot holder's etc. Just a couple of suggestions that I did when building our house and I am so happy that I did. Lastly Put outlets in your room closet in case you have rechargeable vacuums or rechargeable floor sweeper etc that will make things more convenient
I really like your kitchen layout and your shallow "closet" for brooms, step stool, etc. I suggest that you consider sealing the floor of the cabinet under your kitchen sink in some way that it will not absorb water. I have been keeping house for 57 years and have several times seen under the sink leaks that were not noticed right away and the result was rotted wood. I have sometimes put ceramic tile under my sinks and sometimes installed sheet vinyl. In the even of a leak, the clean up is fast. Also, I recommend seriously consider how you can install a pull out mechanism under your sink. Kitchen sinks usually sit in a base cabinet that is 24 inches deep and you mostly have to practiacally lie on the floor to reach the back corners. If you have pull outs installed, getting to those back areas is easier. You can buy metal ones and I think even wooden ones that are installed after the cabinet is built. Just sayin'
Too bad the sink isn't under the window and the stove on the other side, where you have the sink now. My layout of my kitchen is what you have now. I miss having my sink under the window. I love the pantry, such great ideas on your kitchen. Everything is coming together, so exciting!
It’s nice of Debra to help you with the design. It’s difficult to plan a kitchen. I like the look of the open shelving. I personally like symmetry so I’m having an issue with the new window. 😂 And I don’t like closing off a kitchen with a peninsula. So I’m of no use. As long as it something you like and can live with your good. I’ve always had small kitchen so Im used to everything being close together. Wash, chop, cook, store. 😊
Know alot of people think uppers are necessary but you will be amazed at not having them. The kitchen will look bigger. I built a new house 10 yrs ago and didn't put in uppers and still love the look. And I have never felt I needed the extra storage. One thing I do recommend if you have the finances is put pullouts in your cupboards. It will help you have better access to the whole cabinet and no hunting clear in the back. To clarify I did not do this when I built but have since retro fit them into my cabinets and am thrilled at the hunting time it saves. Also at 60 the getting down to get in the back of the bottom shelf was getting a bit harder. The design looks great. Love the pantry. It will be amazing to have a place for all those little appliances that most people are never sure where to put. Doing great can't wait to see as it progresses
Such a Blessing for this lady named Debra to help you. I hope God Blesses her for it. People are kind we just do not hear about it. The walkway into the kitchen area is bigger than a doorway would be, so think you are ok with that. It is going to look great!!! You are going to love it. Where are you going to put the plug by the sink? Electrical you need to think about. Stove, etc.
Hi Abby, have you considered underfloor electric heat for your home. It would eliminate the valuable space taken up by the radiators plus they can be controlled by zones and it’s wonderful to walk on in the cold winter days.
Question: Would the garbage/recycling pull out be much handier beside the sink. This is where you will be cleaning stuff off, peeling, chopping stuff etc. As it is now you will have to carry all scraps and things all the way across the kitchen.
So glad you are working with someone who has kitchen design experience! You've done a lot of thinking and working through ideas and now you have your design, which I like very much. What fun it will be to see the rough plumbing and electricity! At that point in our house renovations, I took pictures of everything so I'd know where wires and pipes were after the sheetrock is installed. I have them in an album - so handy! I thought I would just mention that someone in my family has cabinets over her island, and it works extremely well! It doesn't break up the open floor plan but seems to create a little definition and feels just right. Also, she has outlets under the cabinets, which is handy when using all those wonderful countertops. You can tell how much I like her set-up!
Hi Abby watch the three birds renovation . The window on the stove side must serve outside and inside . The window on the island side I will turn on its side so it can slide open and still have a counter underneath the window so you have a u-shaped. The island I will move a few inches back towards the stove so you have more space in your dining room. Even if that sliding window opens on the island it will make you feel you're sitting outside. The window you can move slightly to the dining-room side. You can then go big on you open shelving in that corner.
I love it!! Very small suggestions: electrical outlets under new window, under the open shelving and on the island (either at the end or under where the bar stools are). I have an outlet on the end of my island and it's the one I use the most. The microwave seems a little low to me. Maybe have an outlet on the shelf above so you can move the microwave if you need to later on. Some kind of storage in the dining room seems useful for wine and wine glasses, placements, tabletop decor, candles, etc.
Your kitchen design looks great. One thing I would switch is putting your hidden trash draw next to the sink. Then put extra storage drawers where you currently have the trash at. Best of luck with it all.
This all looks so awesome. You should pretend that your are prepping and cleaning up a meal and see if the flow is function for you. I have a thought on your pull out trash cabinet. I don't know your prep and clean-up habits but it may be more convenient for you if you switch the drawers and trash cabinet. I my trash cabinet is between my sink and my dishwasher and I am glad it is there because I generate more trash/garbage near the sink when I prep and more trash/garbage when I load the dishwasher than I generate at the stove.
A lovely new kitchen - plus a link with the history of the house by keeping an original piece of furniture right there with it. Great idea! If you put in a new window do make sure you have enough storage elsewhere. You're a bit low on actual storage space at present.
Personally I would put a shorter window in to allow you to have cabinets wrap around like a U. It would still let a lot of light in while giving you both more storage and counter space.
Hi Abby, And thank you Debra for stepping up to help with your professional skills. Yayayaay,,,looks awesome! Abby, God has Blessed you greatly my dear friend! ❤️ It’s gonna be beautiful!M
I think its great that you love your cardboard kitchen so much...Imagine how much your going to love it when it's done...Lol. It's so nice to have a home of your own isn't it? Cant wait to see it all done! 🙂👍♥️🌹 ~~Much Love~~&~~God Bless~~
Ooo I think it could be cool to add some glass shelves to the window beside the fridge To sit maybe herbs and your lettuce and such on. And then Maybe a French casement window beside the stove that you can pass stuff thru when entertaining on your patio? I think that could be very cool.
Be sure you have a deep enough drawer for pot, pans, and covers. They take a lot of room. Will your stove have a bottom drawer? I love mine. Lots of extra storage space.
One suggestion on the shelfs in the kitchen is using the hidden supports for the shelfs instead of metal brackets that you can see, It is only a suggestion but they sure look great. Of course the shelfs are thicker, so you can hide the support in the wooden shelves.
Maybe put radiator in kitchen under window to left of counter with stove and cover with a fancy fancy radiator cover for decor! I believe you can put some decor on top that is hear resistant? Really enjoy watching your journey 😊
I liked your idea of keeping your small appliances in your pantry, on the counter, all ready to go so much I am trying to do something simular in my kitchen. I dont have a pantry but I rearranged my kitchen to have a 'bake center' no more lugging out my foodprocessor and the like! Thank you, watching your progress is such fun.😁😁
i grew lettuce this winter. it was so much fun and delicious. one tip; be sure you cut it with something plastic. metal will leave your plants with brown ends.
I did open shelves in my new kitchen and I love it. So many plants and nice white dishes and I painted the back wall black with white cabinets. I did the shelves in wood.I would be happy to send you my kitchen photos if you would like? Best of luck with everything.
Down the line if you find you need more counter top/space you could incorporate a movable table/butcher block in between stove and sink. Maybe rounding edge of counter top/overhang where you walk through to avoid accidently catching side or kid hitting head.
I like your graphics about the layout(s). Your kitchen design is awesome looking. Additionally; I think your idea of living in your house is very good providing you a better idea of storage spaces etc.
Nice design plan, really nice a viewer helped you with this. I think doing a mock up with cardboard will help you get a feel for the space prior to the actual install, give you a chance to make any adjustments. Looking good!
You’re at the fun part!!! It’s started. Definitely place that old piece of furniture beside the wall as you walk through from the kitchen toward the living space - don’t use built ins, strategically placed antiques that are also functional will really give the place a layer of authenticity and connection to the history. Really like how you have left the walls bare, don’t fill the gap with over the counter cupboards- what you designed in the app is great, it will create the illusion of extra space, and show off your lovely flat ceilings. So pleased you are up-cycling the old cabinets and building new ones from locally sourced lumber. If only more people approached renovations like you do we wouldn’t be in nearly as much of a mess as we are.
Like Debra I am also retired, but have NO architectural experience so my two cents might be worthless. Just asking you what you plan to do in front of your window? I would put your sink /dishwasher there and the stove on the island. I absolutely loved doing dishes at my window in previous houses. I have an island sink now. And though it does the trick, no beautiful scene to enjoy. You are always busy at your sink, but if there is just counter space in front of the window, you won't get to enjoy the view nearly so much. I know, you probably don't want anymore food (kitchen, get it?) for thought. But your window is a gem to enjoy while you work! Bravo to your progress!!!!
I have been thinking to tell you put some plug outlets in your pantry. You can put your extra cabinets in there. The outlets you may find you use especially when hosting an event to keep extra crock pots on. Just a thought.
Windows are the heat loss areas in winter and heat generators in summer, most heating ducts or "radiators" are located under windows. Your design has them away from windows so you will gain wall space after discussions with your HVAC guy. NOTE: you may want to reconsider a boiler system, if you need air conditioning, a forced air system will provide that over a boiler system.
Looks great, if you need extra storage and have enough room….what about making your island 2 sets of cabinets back to back to give a larger work top and be able to access the cabinets from both sides of the island, you can still have over hang for seating. Instead of all cupboards have you thought about have more drawers, I can tell you they are back savers. I can’t wait to see it all finished but in the same breath I will be sad to see it end as I am enjoying following your journey
Looks great!! Love the storage. In the one nook where you talked about an outlet inside the drawer please make sure they put one above the counter also. I'd put it close to the corner so when not needed you can just put a vase in front of it and not see it. Just an idea. So exciting!
I love everything except the corner shelf. I think it looks janky. I would put a double shelf next to the cabinet.Or on the right wall. I love your house. It's so beautiful ❤️
I am so excited about the window looking out to the back yard and the creek!! That is what I thought all along would be fantastic. To open that window and hear the water rushing and see out the back. Wonderful!!! Also, have you seen the RU-vid channel New England Fine Living? She is redoing an old house and is close to having her kitchen done. You should look at her walkin pantry.
