Today is an exciting day at the house as my beautiful basement stairs are now complete!! Today we are putting in the new stair treads on the basement stairs of my 150 year old fixer upper house!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! Follow along on my channel if you want to see DIY projects, renovating a house on a budget, and I am sure a lot of craziness along the way! I'm just a girl with a drill and a dream.

That ditch in the floor looks like something you see in an old spring house. Basically a small cool water spring running under the room to keep it cool. Kept milk and other things cool before refrigeration. I LOVE the fact that you are restoring this old home with wood from your Dad's mill. Just thinking about your family and friends helping you demolish and rebuild, Jim and the horses going out to get the logs, milling them and using them to rebuild in your house...Nothing more could make that a home built out of love!! BEAUTIFUL!

Yes indeed, a handrail is badly needed. When your insurance agent comes out for the inspection he or she will tell you that you must put at least one handrail up so that someone doesn’t fall going up or down your stairway. ❤️

Xmas? Oh my goodness, where do I begin?? For starters, both hubby and myself had covid, for a week, on top of that hubby had 10 days in hospital while I had 5 days of food poisoning... then, as well, the local housing authority granted us a lovely little unit.. 3 days before Xmas. So, I had to move house, during which I pulled 5 muscles.... lol. So, Xmas 2022 will be very memorable.....

Love the stairs! Was thinking how beautiful it would be, if instead of a pocket door on your pantry, you could sand one of the original doors, and make a sliding barn door on there instead. It's always great to use a peace of the history of the house! Keep up the great work. Love your videos.

Happy New Year from Australia 🇦🇺 it’s the 1st of January 2023 here. Our Christmas was lovely. We always have Christmas lunch at our house. We have 3 son’s, 2 live in Melbourne Australia (which is about 5 hours away from us ) they came home for about a week or so. It is always a blessing to see them. One son & his family live 45 minutes away from us. We have 2 little grandchildren, grandson turns 4 this week, granddaughter is 2.5 years old. Our Christmas Day lunch was busy, with 14 of us. Our grandchildren had a blast & was so spoiled.

Just my opinion, but I would put some kind of treatment on the stairs to keep moisture from soaking into the wood. Maybe some Danish oil. I liked the ideas you mentioned during this video, and the basement stairs are just beautiful! I'm sure you will be adding a railing for those not as nimble as you, but the steps themselves sure look sturdy. And you had those screws in, in no time flat, just like the pro you are becoming! Everybody already mentioned the old time method of keeping certain foods cool is what you have in your basement floor. I'll be interested in hearing ideas from other commenters if there's a practical use for it even today. I guess we don't really know how difficult the future could be for us here if living conditions get really bad, so something to think about? You have come a long way on this remodel already. Not many young women would tackle such a project. It's wonderful you have the support of parents and others who can help, but you sure put a lot of quality time and effort into your awesome project. I'm very proud of you. All the best as you progress ❣

I agree with another commenter as the water there might have been a diverted spring to keep Milk and other items cool and "refrigerated" I'm pushing 80 and even in the late 40's we were still using Ice boxes before everyone could afford a refrigerator. so keeping things cool/cold and fresh took quite a lot of inovations. and that and cistern's were common in the day. ECF.

Hi I’m catching up on your progress! I use to be designer for a closet company. Rule of thumb for overall hanging space depth is 24” because you don’t want the clothes to drag against the back wall when moving them along the rod. So rod/pole should be center of that. After seeing the beautiful snowy winter I’m going to assume bulkier clothing will be used. So I would add an inch or 2 to sufficiently accommodate the extra bulk.

It was cool to watch you screw the steps down, hey...a drill and a dream in true action in every sence of the word. You where perfectly methodical and consistent like you Dad. You have a light hand and the drill twist perfect , that is good finesse and you can work longer then all tensed up. Being I drill alot of steel, I get kind of rigid so admire your finesse. Owe and your nails look great, my favorate color by the way. Sharp!....The stairs look awesome, I thought of your Dad cutting these trees, horses skidding, piling, trucking, s.mill, stack, dry plane, cut etc...as you screwed them down...So Cool, So cool. The very first thing I would do is limit access into the house for the winter to the least windy door. I would definitely limit access through the front(?) door shown in the video and close that gaping hole below the door. I would like to see a floor plan of the house as you have it now. I am convinced that you could extend the house outward on the back(?) in what I understood to be your kitchen space. Outward enough to make a 16" by 4'+ kitchen closet eight feet high. Very simple to do. It would be a very easy job for the guy who did the stairs.
