Finally. A 1911 I Would Actually Buy (and Maybe Carry)

In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves reviews a 1911 that he thought he was going to hate - no, that he wanted to hate. This particular 1911 is a polymer/alloy/steel hybrid made specifically to be the same size, weight, and capacity of the Glock 19 and to take the king of the compacts head on. Does it succeed? Is this 2011 a challenger to the Glock 19 throne? James puts this double-stack 9mm 1911 (technically a 2011) through the paces including a 500 round review and a full takedown.
Check today's video to get the scoop on the only 1911 derivative James (so far) considers a decent buy for carry: BUL Armory SAS II Ultra Light 2011.

it probably is a 3.25" barrel, James. You measure barrels from the breach face to the end. In other words, put it all back together, stick a pencil down the barrel (with the breech closed), mark the end of the barrel on the pencil, and then measure that distance. That is the by the book way to measure a barrel, and i bet anything that it being a 1911 barrel that it doesn't fully support the case, which would mean that where you measured from doesn't touch the breech face. Sorry to nerd it up in the comment section. Carry on, gents.
@tfbtv
@tfbtv 4 года назад
Don't you dare apologize. Awesome comment. I owe the apology as it looks like the barrel is closer to 3.23". Photos: imgur.com/a/GJPrqPq Point still stands in that the barrel itself is substantially shorter than the G19, but my measurements in the video are accordingly 2/10ths of an inch off if this is correct.

Oh for sure. That thing looks amazing, I would just have a hard time carrying a $1,000 gun. I don’t know if the risk in having to give it up in the event something happened versus the odds of it making a difference in winning the fight would be justified. By the way I’ve still got the dollar dollar bill y’all gripped hi point that you gave me. I’d say hit me up if you want to grab a beer next time your in town but seeing as how the covid has messed everything up guess that’s not gonna happen. That is NOT a 1911. It’s a 2011. Huge difference. He wouldn’t consider that gun if it were a 1911 with 7-8 round capacity. Calling this gun a 1911 is like calling the Shelby Cobra an AC Ace. Is the newer, better one, based on the older one? Sure. But it’s not the same.

The problem is when you have guys growing up being only exposed to handguns like the Glock your going to have them bad mouthing the 1911. But the one thing that’s clearly evident is the 1911 has the best trigger around and the gun is extremely fast and accurate. Most of the 1911’s faults come from the magazines even the stock Colt mags are junk. If you buy high quality mags like Cobra mags you will never have a reliability problem even with series 70’s and 80’s guns. There’s a reason why 20 plus different manufacturers make the 1911 and 2011.
@Daddy53751

In all seriousness, how the hell does James manage to get every 1911 he touches to be unreliable? I find that very hard to believe. I’ve owned a pretty cheap hunk of steel (Taurus) and not once did it ever malfunction more than one time. Used cheap steel cased ammunition on a cold February morning at 5°, one stovepipe. That’s it. Perhaps we need to consider operator error?

What you need to understand is you shouldn’t have to wonder if your gun will go boom when you need it to. Hoping that a firearm won’t jam (like 1911s do) hasn’t proven reliable enough. @@mrsincere4640 I agree, and I would never put a gun in my holster that has not sent plenty of lead down range and been thoroughly put through its paces by me. I know a few guys who carry 1911's and for them it is their gun of choice. I'm very aware of the reputation of 1911s jamming but at the same token I own a Kimber Micro Nine that has sent thousands of rounds down range without a hitch. I've even carried it on occasion. Generally, my edc is a striker fired Hellcat. I tell people shoot what's right for you. If it's what you like, it performs well, and it goes boom when you pull the trigger, then power to you.

I'd understand 800-1200 for a time while you're trying to pay off redesign and the cost of new machine tools, but they're never going to get the purchase volume to become a carry staple with prices like that - which is a catch 22 since they need the purchase volume to reduce prices :/.

If it points better for you and you spend more time at the range with it, it's a better gun for you. I started using a recover when I started relating because my range had a "if it hits the ground, it's ours" policy, but after using one for a while and practicing with the da trigger more, i ended up preferring revolvers for shooting handling and getting into big bore and sa hunting revolvers. Angie and trigger each just works better for me, the sa triggers on a tuned rev will beat what you can do on an auto, and it keeps the brass with you for reloading. Side benefit is the much greater leeway when you're making particularly hot loads as you can get face erosion and cutting where you might have gotten a chamber failure instead on an auto. Accuracy is another thing i like better, I'm confident in my hunting revolvers at 200yrds and sometimes more, can't say the same with any auto pistol I've tried.

Well lets see, i'm not some high speed pro operator that served in Delta and then the Seals like 95% of gun forum users seem to be but from a lowly peasant: -1911's are very ergonomic in shape due to straight grip angle and single stack nature along with good grips. -1911's have bar none one of the best triggers of any handgun, They even beat out some single action revolvers. -Standard .45 ACP 1911's have low pressure rounds that are easy on the steel parts. -1911's are a excellent suppressor platform. -They shoot very fast, i have always shot one faster than a striker pistol. -They tend to be more accurate than striker pistols due to better trigger and ergos. -Most wont agree with me but i find the weight of these guns to be a advantage for followup shots. -1911 magazines will always fall freely, stripping plastic coated mags out of guns sucks. Are they the most utilitarian gun in the modern world? No but they are a very good gun none the less. _An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age._

By the way, I use Wilson Combat magazines in my 1911s. A quality mag solves 99% of feed issues in QUALITY guns- Colt, Springfield, S&W, Dan Wesson and etc. that proprietary magazine guarantees reliable feeding.

It's well balanced original design that has been produced by so many different manufacturers that everyone's making them to their own specs, most people are using them outside of the intended operation parameters, there's a serious issue regarding magazine feed lips and the type of ammo they were designed to feed, plus the first generations of hollowpoints sucked ass and uncontrolled feed pistols gained popularity over the 1911. The 1911's use of controlled feeding had a wrench thrown into the system with differing bullet shapes and feed lips. Uncontrolled feeding pistols are a little more forgiving. Comparison, USGI mags for ball ammo vs wadcutter feed lips for semi-wadcutter bullets: how-i-did-it.org/magazines2/img/gi_feed_3.jpg how-i-did-it.org/magazines2/img/wc_feed_3.jpg

I've been into 1911's since I was a kid. My command in the service was one of the last hold outs that still used the 1911. After leaving the service I bought a lightweight commander and didn't care much for how it shot. Then I bought a "enhanced combat commander" and I've used it for concealed carry for around 30 yrs now. I have no idea how much ammo I've ran through it and I honestly don't really recall it ever have any kind of misfeed. So either I am very lucky, or 1911's are more reliable than James claims in the video. Yes, there are some drawbacks to carrying a 1911. However, the trigger and the way the gun shoots is my primary reason for carrying it. I have been keeping my eye out for an affordable (Relatively speaking) double stack 9mm single action. Maybe this is the gun I've been waiting for.

To be clear, I don't like glocks either. They just said this gun was meant to compete with Glock. Typically in a free(ish) market, in order to compete with a product, you need to make a better one, at a similar price point. This $1300 2011 is one of those things.

Okay, so would a Para-Ordinance be considered a "2011" gun? As to being lightweight, that's all and good, except that, at least for me, I find guns that are that light tend to be unpleasant to shoot for any extended period. Case in point, my Taurus 709 Slim. While my full size steel frame 1911 in .45ACP I can shoot all day long. Or at least until I empty my wallet, bank account, and both credit cards feeding it at today's ammo prices. There's a balance in there somewhere everyone who carries needs to find. For me, a little heavier is preferred. The 30 oz. range seems best for me. I need to look this company up. That frame with a a commander length slide and barrel, minus all the flutes and cut-outs, would be the perfect thing for me I suspect. If they offer something like that, then I think I know what my next gun will be! *[EDIT]* Okay... If I was to put this compact frame on the SAS II TAC LIGHT 4.25", I'd have my perfect concealed carry gun.

Hey James, a quick note on the slide release: JMB designed it to be hit with the support thumb after inserting the fresh mag. It's not meant to be hit with your firing hand, like most modern handguns.

@@jtinnac1895 look at a 1911. There's checkering/knurling on the top side of the slide release, it's put there to improve traction. It is absolutely intended to be used as a slide release, just not with the firing hand.

@mytmousemalibu 4 года назад
Being a 2011 you have to have some big ass mits to hit the slide stop with your firing hand. That is a common 2011 phenomenon. Most 2011's are used as competition guns and most of us have either a cut slide stop or non-lockback followers. Very few competitors utilizing it. With a 1911 and standard grip panels you can get your firing thumb on the pad of it.

I understand that lower round count and weight aren’t in the 1911s favor. But In my opinion, most people can shoot even cheap 1911s out the box much better than any polymer gun. The trigger pull on even low end 1911s is lighter and crisper than most other guns. Hands down, I always shoot better with my 1911s. I have the Springfield micro 1911, but I generally carry my XDS 9mm most days. One of the main reasons being that I don’t feel nearly as bad when I drop or dirty up a polymer gun. But I WILL ALWAYS love the 1911 for it’s shooting characteristics.

Ok we get it you hate 1911s, you obviously never shot good quality 1911s until now or had to rely on one. I spent the first 7yrs of my 20 yr army career carrying a 1911A1 in 45 ACP (why throw pebbles when you can throw rocks) Glad you like Glocks you obviously started with them its understandable that you like them if you started shooting handguns with one. No slamming on Glocks they work and work well. They just aren't a handgun I'd take into the woods or desert for actual combat. As a police officers side arm they are great! Just not a Combat handgun. BTW neither was the Beretta.

I can explain this feeling you have... you're not ready for a nursing home quite yet. Guns like a Glock or M&P are great, but they are like an appliance. I mean, my toaster oven works like a champ and does what I need it to do, but I have no love for it. A 1911 has a soul. You will come to love it. When you hold it, it holds you right back. You can stick it in your waistband and take out the trash... not gonna shoot yourself when you have the thumb AND grip safeties. Once you carry it a while it will become your emotional support pistol. I'm telling you... you'll see... It's that 1911 thing. There is a reason why the old guys love those things. The pistol has CHARACTER.

James, I own quite a few 1911s and I've had nothing but good luck with mine. I can honestly say in the thousands of rounds thru all of them and have had next to nothing for issues. My Sig Scorpion 1911 is in my EDC rotation. I've literally had one problem with that one and it was a magazine. I clean an oil them more than any of my other guns granted but I can say that I, can can trust in them 100%. That said this Bul Armory 1911 looks freaking awesome. I am going to their website right now to look at their products and see if there is an FFL near me that has one so that I can get one today or tomorrow.
