You’ve officially advanced to my top five favourite synthesizer review channels, due to your knowledge, humour and ability to actually play those things :)
The Matriarch is so much more worth the money in terms of features and capabilities compared to the ridiculously overpriced Minimoog Model D, that’s for sure. It’s a really fun instrument to experiment and play with, you can get some insane sounds out of it. I’m so glad I have one.
That intro song was spectacular and the explosion at the end fit perfectly. Finally Alex on Moog's, I haven't got the opportunity to have fun with the Matriarch so your video give an idea of what is capable and as always excellent video. Claudio (Dr.Mix) in your production team? LOL!
So odd.. I was looking into the matriarch today! Your channel is my fav on RU-vid by far by the way.. perfect balance of synth love and education and comedy and great music
Formant sound on a Matriarch. Cool! Thanks for teaching this old synth dog a new trick today! I have my effects pedal patched into my cutoff filter which adds to the fun.
Finally! WOW! Now all we need is a video on the score for the original Tron (pretty please...?) like you did for Terminator 2 and Escape from New York...
I actually have sheet music for it somewhere. It would be quite epic to work out but perhaps... Do I get one of those light bikes as payment? It's one of my terms.
"I'm not weird, you are". Now look here, that's quite a sophisticated statement which leads me to the conclusion that there's more to Alex Ball than synth guy. Thing is that synths must regard humans as very strange beings; couple of preseumptions in there. Okay so back on tac: terrific vt. I've just listened via phone via hifi and the synths sounded dreamily good.
This "Groove based demo 2" reminded me of the old Polish TV "music video" for Marek Biliński's "Ucieczka z Tropiku". (Escape from the Tropics) Also: explosion(s). And the beard.
Fantastic synth, the Matriarch. There are free software editors available, which can be used via USB to change the settings and avoid the clunky keyboard combinations. They work very well. Moog should definitely release their own editor anyway. Great video, as usual. Thanks!!
I think the Sound Studio was the one I had more fun with, which was surprising as I was dying for a proper go on the Matriarch. Perhaps the Sound Studio is just that bit more unconventional. I could jam with it for days.
I have these, and separately they are wonderfully complex. Put them all together, and you may as well order takeout and lock the door. Remember to stay hydrated.
The first experimental demo with the sound studio gave me big Tomas Dvorak Machinarium vibes. The second was so musique concrete I'm surprised you didn't pull out a dainty french cigarette to accompany it. Fantastic stuff and you've certainly put me in the mood for that sort of music right about now.
Terrific sounds, nice helpful video-thanks for posting! Bloody good stuff! (and yes-I'm a fan of all things Brit and am countering the "most British person" comment here with an American "why the hell not?" comment). Love the vintage gear tied in here: E-mu sp12 sounds cool, and so does the CR-78. Wow! How did you get your hands on all this cool vintage gear??? Definitely making some absolutely fabulous sounds here! MORE MOOG PLEASE!!
I love your compositions, experiments, videos, and overall way of being in such a major way. You're a true treasure in the noble pantheon of great synthesists
Love my matriarch. Playing with the paraphony certainly is a skill to work on. The keybed is pretty good. It doubles also a pretty good midi controller. Anyways love the vid. Sounds awesome!
As soon as anyone mentions the word 'Moog,' My fingers go straight to the like button, which is a shame because I wanted to add another like for the opening ditty and another for the video! Thank you for uploading this Alex.
Lots of reasons to pity people who don't love music and synths, but one of which is such unfortunate people will never truly appreciate the superlative quality of everything on Alex's channel. Jaw-droppingly good. Bravo and thank you!
Outstanding video! You really get what the Matriarch is all about. I have had one for a couple of years and every time I sit down to it (which is daily) I am both amazed and pleased with its capabilities. And I really liked how you demonstrated how well it plays with others. This feature allows me to use the Matriarch to tie my studio together into an "orchestra" of synths. It is sublime! Thank you for this video!
Thanks for the video Alex, great work as always. To be honest, for the top of the line mono/para , and a matriarch of a line sharing particular architecture I find it too expensive and not revolutionary. Subsequent 37 beats it pretty much in all areas (i am talking exclusively on a standalone basis, and without going into semi modular build and endless options modular patch points are offering). So, yes, Moog built entire line with modular gear in mind, which is commercially good, Subsequent is just the latest incarnation of Fatty line. I wouldn't say no to it, I would just say that if someone is in market for a premium mono synth and they maybe don't have modular stuff, it might be better to look elsewhere - either within Moog - Subsequent - or a beast like Pro 3, all the way to maybe Perfourmer, there are lots of synths out there with much stronger feature lists, combinations of digital and analogue oscillators, multi filters etc. If you, however ,have a nice functional modular grid, then, it is a different story.
Oh man, this is a 'bleeps' 'bloops' and noise shot fest. Very interesting and informative. A fantastic array of demos. Thanks for taking time to set up and present them to us.
Would u like to share that 1:25 Matriarch sound? That 'talking' sound. I can't see the settings clear enough. Don't have a clue how you did that one! Enjoyed this one a lot.
These are great instruments in the sense that one can just bring out their completely own sound different from anyone else's. Even though it's moog, it's also clearly Alex Ball.
Thank you RU-vid algorithm. The Monty Pythonesque intro was something completely different. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Say no more. Great demo, btw. Thanks. 🎧🙌🏻
I've got a little Phatty. I already can not believe how many Moogs you have! You must be a dealer of some sort. GREAT JOB BRO AND NICE INTRODUCTION SONG. YOUR THE FIRST VIDEO EVER ON MY NEW MACBOOK PRO
Right, that does it. You win my award for the best channel on Nixi.., I mean, RU-vid, along with The Kiffness and Melody Sheep. Hilariously brilliant intro mate! (Sorry I'm two years late but I only discovered your channel last week.)
I love these things. I now have a Matriarch and a Muse in my space, and to be honest I still consider myself a novice in certain respects. But these instruments feel very musical to me, they are a joy to play around with.
IFF you find that you need a good solder gun, for the silver solder repair work. I find that Snap On Tools and its Taiwanese compadre BluePoint make the very best solder guns. You need to hold the gun underneath the joint of which you are melting. These guys have two different insertable forks and a flash light with two stage triggering. So heat those puppies up, and drop on your solder!!!!! It's pretty simple really!!!!! LONG LIVE THE UK!
3:43 Would anyone happen to have the patch for this? I tried to copy this out from the video, but it seems like my synth is playing two layered sounds, rather than two independent sounds. Thanks in advance!
A couple of ways you can do it, but from memory I setup bandpass filtering (series HP/LP) and used the envelope with a slow attack for that wow sound. Filter needs a fair bit of resonance and then you modulate it at audio rate from the LFO. As the LFO hits frequencies of 15khz and below, the niquist frequency becomes more and more evident and you get that aliased, vocal type sound. Another way to do it is via a sample and hold circuit that's sampling the audio with clock rates of 15khz or down. Gets proper broken below 8khz.
Mate, why this two products doesn´t sound "vintage" by any reason but more Doepfer/eurocrap like? May be by the low quality of nowadays components and non hand soldering but industrial made on a few seconds as a CD or DVD? Compare it with a real Minimoog, EML 101 or any of the 70´s stuff you got there and on a blind test, this modern stuff even coming from Moog are disappointing in sound terms even the Matriarch can come close, but not enough.
I wonder if he may be the only reviewer to correctly pronounce Moog? It's not Mow-g like "mow your lawn", and its not Mooooog, like the sound a cow makes. It's somewhere in between that only a Brit can pull off correctly, and I guess Bob Moog.
Hello Alex: I really liked the title, "No idea mate". I'm not sure if that expression is incredibly British or incredibly Australian. Stay well and safe.
Almost everyone says the grandmother is a better synth, especially compared to the price difference, but I think they don’t understand what the matriarch can do. I think not only does it sound better and have more creative options, it’s a better match for the Sound Studio 3.
Alex, this was a good video as always, but your attitude is very different... I notice some discomfort, you look a bit shy and doubtful compared to the rest of your videos. The result is no less for that, it just feels somewhat unfamiliar, if that makes sense.
Thought I would give this a shot. What settings did you use to create the sound at about 5.29 sec in? I’ve created similar sounds on the Matriach but not this nice lol. Also the intro has been stuck in my head for days now. That’s a hit!
I recognise the melody you're playing as soon as the deeper look starts at around 2 and a half minutes, but I can't remember who it is or what song it is and it's just killing me
