I’ve been fighting a thrips infestation for the past two months that I thought would be the death of me, but I think I’m almost past it. I took immediate action and fortunately haven’t lost a single one of my 150+ plants. If any thrips are reading this, know that your time has come.

Hey Fern, this is the recipe I use and it hasn’t burned any leaves; even anthurium emergents! Combine 4 cups Water 1/8 cup Dr. Woods Tea tree soap 1/8 cup Dr. Woods Peppermint soap 1/2 cup 70% Alcohol 1 1/2 tsp 3% Hydrogen peroxide Shake to combine as using. Spray the leaves to run off, top of soil, nursery pot, cover pot. Clean surfaces. Use monthly to clean leaves or weekly for an active outbreak (3 weeks minimum).

I have all the stuff to spray bugs, store bought and diy, but I've only sprayed 2x's. When I find bugs I separate and wash with dish soap and water, then spray with water in about 2 days and again if I see any. That's worked well for me. This summer I had an explosion of thrips on 1 newest leaf on an Anthurium, sprayed like that and they haven't come back. I was very surprised, bc there must have been 200 nymphs on the 1 newest leaf. I also decided to cut off 3 leaves with older damage, but had just a few thrips. I expected them to come back, but they haven't. Luckily I caught it in time, bc the 1 leaf looks really good.

hey fern! i think it makes sense to spray diatomaceous earth on the plants again befor you leave since you're worried about pests when you're gone, i know you just washed them off, but this treatment is a good option because it stays on the leaves for a long time. looking forward to you vlog prepping the plants for the trip!

Dear Fern, use ONLY the Castile Soap and water, and skip the alcohol and peroxide any time you do not see an ACTIVE infestation. Soap (especially horticultural soap, such as Safer, Garden Safe, Bonide Super Soap) is enough to control the most common types of chewing/sucking pests (mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, aphids, scale) on houseplants. You might need to repeat weekly for several weeks, but it's truly effective and very gentle on new growth and delicate variegation. Reserve the alcohol for when you can SEE mealies, spider mite webbing, aphids, and other buggies attacking your plants.
@krishalifax2746
@krishalifax2746 День назад
Do you rinse the soap mixture off after applying, or do you leave it on? It's the only part I'm unsure of...
@wildfern
@wildfern День назад
Good idea!! I’ll do that once I’m in the clear here 😃
@irairod5160
@irairod5160 21 час назад
@@krishalifax2746 Do not wash it off. That's one of the reasons why it's best to use a properly formulated horticultural soap (Bonide Super Soap, Safer Insect Killing Soap, Garden Safe) or pure Castile Soap and water, never dishwashing soap. The soap has to remain on the leaves because it works by making contact with the pests, clinging to their exoskeleton, and smothering them slowly. Dawn and other "soaps" and not really soaps, they are detergents and could damage your plant with repeated use. Now, if it's convenient, you can spray the horticultural soap on and let the plant drip dry, then, a few days later, take the plant to the sink or shower and blast it with just water. This will do 2 things: dislodge any critters that might have hatched since last soap treatment, and remove excess soap that can sometimes give a hazy look to the leaves. In fact, I wash my plants BEFORE I spray them with soap, and once the pests are gone, at least once a month to remove dust and optimize photosynthesis...and just in case there's any type of "bug" lurking, waiting to take over.

Another comment from me. Having had houseplants for decades, I now won’t buy hangers that are attached to the pot that are made with rope, jute, etc. Every one eventually frays and falls away due to watering the pot and the rope soaking the water up. The plant lands on the floor! If I love the pot, I’ll buy it but will restring it with wire.

For spider mites and thrips I recently tried treating my plants with the Safer's "3 in 1" insecticide. I had done a few treatments with "End All" but only one treatment of the "3 in 1" did the job for many plants. It leaves kind of a greasy residu that seems to work well.

Alcohol dehydrates tissue. Which can really explain the crispy leaves. Also I’m not sure it can really amp up the results of diatomaceous earth. What if you spray everything down again before y’all go and after when y’all get back? Maybe that’ll help keep extra protection! ❤ Also, thinking about the diy spray… I’ve had that happen but the only difference was I used a minuscule amount of dawn. I think it mainly happened from sunlight too soon because I’ve always used a soapy towel to wipe leaves and NEVER had that happen until then. I’d recommend trying to spray when your lights go off and see. I do also try and avoid new growth but I bet you’re right from it collecting in the unfurling process.(Edit: after seeing the pot… WILD… it has to be a chemical reaction from the ingredients and sun for it to legit burn through that rope!) 😳 On the cebu, I’m thinking the scale could be in the moss or coming in the window?? I’m confused on why that one keeps getting it but the ones around it aren’t? 🤔

Your variegated cactus should have been out outside over the summer. They need cold weather to help set the blooms. And you’re right to leave it in natural light. They need longer dark days to help it bloom too. I always used to put my Christmas cactus outside in the summer and then brought it in just before the first freeze. Worked every time. I got lazy and haven’t put it out in a while. Last time it bloomed was 2019. Time to plan on putting it out next summer.

First time commenter here. Been following your channel for years! I use a similar castille soap solution and noticed the same type of damage when I initially used it. I think it's from hydrogen peroxide and/or too much of the solution getting trapped in the leaf sheath causing rot/burn on the new growth. Have omitted the hydrogen peroxide since and have been more conscious of not allowing too much water to get caught in sheaths and haven't had the issue since. PS cotton buds are the perfect tool to soak up trapped solution from the sheath - a little OTT I know 😊

EFN’s, I had to Google that one! I had never heard of it. Maybe that’s what’s going on with my Micans philodendron. I’ll keep a closer watch to see if there are any little sticky spots on the back of my leaves. There are never any bugs/pests so maybe EFN’s!

Did you let your plants dry after diy pest treatment before you put them under grow lights?

My monstera thai con is putting out gorgeous leaves! I have noticed that the white parts are more yellow than cream/white though. I thought they would turn more white once they hardened off but they haven't. Is this a sign of something I'm doing wrong? They are in well lit room with a grow light I got off of amazon. Also, I love your Pingdom but all those deceased bugs would make me want to scrap them off 😅

@wildfern re: the pest spray... The measurements and concentrations are important. what is the recipe youve used? Make sure the hydrogen peroxide is only 1% concentration and you're only using 1 tablespoon to 2quarts of water. The alcohol should be only a 70% concentration.
