Rakdos huh? This feels like a flavor fail to me. Gruul or Boros would have felt more phoenixy. Mechanics-wise Rakdos makes a ton of sense, but symbolically Boros is more appropriate.

The deck is complete jank without black sac outlets are a requirement. It is bad enough how easy it is to shut down graveyard strategies without every removal under the sun hosing you.

Depends on the lore implications, black is the colour of death and rebirth which both of these effects fit. Red fits in the burn effect and the typical phoenix effects

Because you are casting syrix from the graveyard you can also include a card like Birgi who will make a red mana when you cast a spell

I'd like to point out that Phoenix's come back, every which way. Landfall, casting 3+ instants/sorceries, morphing, cascading, dealing damage with red instant/sorcery/chandra planeswalkers, coming back (once), mutating, paying mana, power 4 or greater, tribute, metalcraft, dealing 3+ damage, skipping your draw step, escaping, waiting a turn, learning, having your commander, cycling, day/night, attacking with 3+ creatures, and Worldheart Phoenix. ...and then Screeching Phoenix, that..... can't come back, weird.

Its gonna be fun now trying to balance a deck with every phoenix. I tried a mono red with squee running it for thamatic reasons but now have access to all the black cycling, cascade etc cards.

Well, a lot of those are low impact on the overall synergy. Ferocious will be fairly easy in Rakdos. Metalcraft is actually workable fairly easily in Commander with all the mana rocks. As is, well, having your commander. Day/Night will happen a fair amount, especially in a multiplayer game. etc etc. Additionally, can use Maskwood Nexus or Conspiracy (the former is probably better by far) to make other creatures into phoenixes too.

Fun fact: Chromatic Orrery makes going infinite with Syrix and Skyfire a lot easier. Mana can be spent as though it was any color. So Ashnod's Altar as an example. Sac Syrix for 2 mana, then Skyfire for 2 more. Syrix triggers, recast it, then Skyfire triggers and returns. Back where you started, but with 2 potential death and etb triggers off other cards, or infinite mana if you have any cost reduction for Syrix.

I came up with another way. Only problem is that you need Phyrexian Altar, which is hella expensive. Tribute: Phoenix Commander - Syrix Tribute: Skyfire Phoenix Enabler: Phyrexian Altar Enabler: Heartless Summoning Win Con: Blood Artist Plan of Action: 1. Commander cost 2 less to cast 2. Sacrifice both boys for 2 Mana 3. Deal 2 Damage and gain 2 4. Resummon Commander for 2 Mana from grave 5. Get other Phoenix back automatically 6. Repeat for profit What do you think? There are other creatures with this kind of effect but Blood Artist was the cheapest I found.

Jaya Ballard is a great discard outlet also Homura, human descendant is a fantastic lord that also counts as a finisher. About time they make a commander the only issue is it is not five color so worldheart Phoenix will still not have a place in Phoenix tribal.

I'm really interested in seeing future support for this commander. Phoenix creatures have for the most part been synergistic slaves to the mechanics of the set they are in there aren't enough good stand alone phoenix cards to make it work smoothly just yet. Also very interested in that they added black, either they are planning on doing something with that like black Phoenix cards, or they just thought the colander needed the color of resurrection to work

ah, I misread it at first. I thought it dealt the damage as soon as the creature left the graveyard. it's only one phoenix at the beginning of the end phase that does damage regardless of how many things left the GY, so you may want to also play some decent buffs to really take advantage of it like Bonehoard.

Just learned about a legendary phoenix and got excited. Then I learned it was a black card and got disappointed. What a flavor fail. I guess I am still waiting for a phoenix commander.

Have you considered building a budget deck around Anowon, the Ruin Thief. Most cards that make him work are pretty budget and would make for a great Dimir Aggro build.

I think this is an interesting card though I'm really confused at why it is BR and not just mono-red. Its a really odd choice since literally all the other phoenixes are mono-red. I know that it probably is to get sacrifice effects as well as more recursion effects since black has a ton of them but I think white might have been the better color combination. It has just as much recursion(might be better in some cases) and last year we had Strixhaven which had a ton of effects that fit what Syrix wants to do.

Black has a lot of sac and return effects too, I assume is the reason. I for one desperately wish it was Mardu, though I get the limitations based on the set and precons. Still.... so close. Not only my purest colors, but also white has good reanimation shenanigans too.

I’m not sure of the current price, but altar of dementia might be worthwhile as well, the mill can get a ton of phoenix’s into your graveyard to allow for recursion synergy.

Speaking of tribes that direly need a commander, what do y'all think of this idea: Thousand-Faced Nephilim WUBRG Legendary Creature - Nephilim 5/5 At the start of the game, if Thousand-Faced Nephilim is in your command zone, you may search your library for a Nephilim creature with exactly four colors in its cost and exile it. Thousand-Faced Nephilim perpetually becomes a copy of that card, except its color identity is WUBRG and it's a Legendary creature. Wizards themselves have admitted the Nephilim should have been legendary. This would give people a way to build around any of the Nephilim as a commander legally without having to use Prismatic Bridge shenanigans. (The "exactly four colors" limitation is there to prevent people from abusing changelings that have no business being commanders with it)

Now if only he casted himself for free from the grave and there were more than 12 phoenixes that were usable. Phoenixes are my favorite fictional creature and graveyard strategies are my favorite playstyle but I still wouldn't be caught dead making a deck around this.
