My friend's first intro to magic was with our extra commander decks. Watching him make a deck was so fun. He didn't come from standard so him putting his first deck together was so pure and fun. Every card seemed like the best card ever to him. We ended up giving him spare staples and cohesive cards we had but he had so much fun just playing a 1 or 2 it was still great

My introduction to Magic, my friends took me to a shop and helped me buy my first cards. Told me the basics and I put together some jank. They stomped me into the ground without mercy, they put down Eldrazi and optimized beat down or control decks... Eventually, through the crucible of fire, it molded me into an extremely oppressive, but flexible control style in which I was obsessed with having answers and protecting my creatures... fun times.

If there's anything I've learned from deckbuilding, it's this: if you think you built your deck up to a 7, it's probably a 5. If you think you built your deck down to a 7, it's probably a 9.

It can happen but they also have a worped view of what Cedh is, they play Cedh if your deck is a strong 8 it can hang in Cedh and you won't fine more than 1 or 2 cards in a edh deck that are dead in regular pods. For example I've never seen mental mistep or rest in piece in Cedh you see swan song or mental mistep and I've never seen a Cedh deck card about the graveyard.

@@tatsuhirosatou5513 If people wanted to use the grave in cEDH they would use it as makeshift tutors as in virtual card advantage by returning stuff to the hand after putting it there from the deck. But unless you can break something like a Phage the Untouchable there is really no reason to make a cEDH deck based around the grave till they make a 5 color commander that interacts with the graveyard so Graveborn would actually be viable. And Phage is just a hypothesis like i know you can build a deck around that as a 9 but i am not sure you could make it a 10 and no one really wants to build gimmicks unless its Stax for some reason as people sure love their prison decks instead of using Stax like cards to make a 8 or 9 able to keep up with 10's and have a great chance to win with their win con.

After playing both for a little bit, one of the biggest differences between Yugioh and Magic (in relation to attitude) is that EVERYONE in Yugioh plays with a CEDH mentality. Winning is first and foremost for 98% of players, then you choose your deck based on what can actually potentially win within your price range. I remembered being kind of baffled by the hate for tutors because they're just so absurdly common in Yugioh. Even with 40 card decks being the norm, pretty much every deck has at least 1 built-in tutor (with 3 being common) as well as 15 cards you have access to 100% of the time. _Many of which being tutors._ You'll absolutely be seeing a lot of the same combos every game, but only in the first couple turns. After which the disruption, board breaking, and grind game makes each game feel different.

Well yeah but yugioh only has the 1v1 format, and it's 💯 percent about winning in 1v1 magic too. But commander is such a unique beast, where it's supposed to be about having fun first and winning second

Not always, My. Friend and I have old school decks (no links no modern acrhtypes etc). Some fun throwback games are possible! Especially in paper, with masterduel you can build optimal meta deck and play on ladders but not enough yuigoh players in my town to justify building perfect decks.

I always love to hear other peoples thoughts on deck power level. Great video Joe & Beezy I would say about most pre cons are around 4-6 depending on the cost of the deck and the commander. Example: Necron Dynasties is fairly optimized for a precon I'd probably put it in the 6 to almost 7 range where as Phantom Premonition is on the much lower end probably lying around a 4 even more closer to a 3(I've played it it's awful). so if you're playing people in this range and you realize you're winning about 50-75% of the time through normal play you're probably more on the 7 to 8 scale, 9-10 should look something along the lines of turn 1 a bunch of 0 drop cost cards into win or win on turn 2 if your opponent has any interactions it's going to be a counter spell or on to the next game. 10 is also where it splits off into commander tiers. Some commanders are just better and no amount of level ten play cards is going to matter.

26:00 I actually got to experience that once. Someone brought their cedh deck, and we played a few rounds, of which I only won one of because he scooped after I was able to consistently interact until turn 5. I was playing a Niv-Mizzett, the Firemind deck (built around draw and burn into Isochron scepter and dramatic reversal), which was probably a 6 on this scale. Can't remember their commander, but their main wincon involved going infinite with Kiki-Jiki, had a ton of expensive fast mana, and consistently won by turn 4.
@wchenful
@wchenful Год назад
Yeah it depends a lot on which cEDH deck you play against. A ton of them run like 20-30% cards that are dead draws vs. power 5-6 decks. And if their combo is countered, it takes longer to recover. But I also think that some decks like Rog-Silas or Codie are practically impossible for a lower power deck to beat as they consistently win on ~t2. t4 is considered mid-range to slow in the cEDH format.

Kitchen table commander is the best commander. It's your basic battlecruiser format where everyone is playing their pet cards they like, and nobody has to sit down knowing "okay, Nate over there has 10 win cons that he can rip off with no warning, so we need to suppress him." Yes, I"m an old, boring geezer, but I liked commander before the precons.

I recently got back into MTG, modified a pre con blue/green Commander Legends deck. Aesi, Tyrant of the Gyre Strait. I have omniscience in it. Dropped some of the big dumb creatures and focused on card draw, unblockable creatures, a few life gain, counterspell, board wipes synergies. I think it's probably at a 5 or 6.

I recently approached edh, coming from years of modern and a bit of legacy. I wanted to make a fun deck with my favourite archetype: fungus. They are trash, probably the weakest archetype ever created, but I love 'em. I kept the flavour as my first priority, but I actually tried optimizing everything following the rules of edh. It came out actually pretty fun. Not really consistent since it's pretty vulnerable to removals, but it can do it's own. Maybe it reached a low level 6, but I'm still proud.

I run a Kathril, Aspect Warper Deck. I based it on using the GY to setup Kathril, but also to reanimate with things such as Necromancy and Living Death. I can use 8 Mana (3 Black, 5 Generic) to get out at least 3 creatures with at least 6/6, who are all Flying, Double Strike, Trample, Vigilant, and Indestructible, and use them to get a lot of damage out. (Buried Alive buries Akroma, Vision of Ixidor / Zetalpa, Primal Dawn, and Odric, Lunarc Marshall). Its even better if I play them later, and have a few extra creatures in the GY from milling and/or combat deaths. The most I've ever gotten was 6 creatures all with a total of 8 Keywords, getting a total power of 48 Double Strike added to their base powers, and due to Haste, was able to clear 2 opponents. Still lost, though, as I got hit by my remaining opponent's Commander for an ungodly amount of Commander Damage (It's a 3/3 Red creature that can double its P/T each time you correctly call a coin during combat, then he enchanted it to be unblockable. Can't remember its name, sorry.) Anyway, knowing how I want the deck to run, yet still being a bit fresh to MTG, I think my deck is somewhere in the 5-7 range. Have fun everyone!

It's interesting how different decks require different power ups or downs. I try to stay in the 7-8 range, I like to play optimized mana bases first and foremost. To get my Muldrotha to 7-8 I added Intuition. To keep Prossh from jumping into 9/10 range I run but a single tutor, because I do have Food Chain and I like using it. I'd say 90 percent of the time I never see Food Chain in Prossh and if I win it's with regular aristocrat stuff.

My Liesa deck focuses a lot on using life I gain to do different things like draw off black spells or get out Bolas's Citadel and cast off of it. 4:08 A good place to rank Two is the pre-cons made in 2013 and 2011. Barely cohesive theme, very little ramp, high mana curve, no clear win condition. Precons started around the Rank Three range in 2014 and 2015 (with Deretti and Maren being the only Rank 4). Starting in 2016, the decks were focused enough were most of the decks were Rank 4's with the entirety of AFR's Precons being Rank 5's.

My deck is somewhere around 6-7. Its definitely a theme deck, and I definitely play cards that are worse than what I could do, but the problem is that theme is Memnarch. Hes my favorite character and so Im obsessed with having a deck based on how I imagine he would play. It used to be a lot more powerful because after reading the book I decided the way he would play was "stop everyone else from doing anything while I build towards godhood" AKA essentially Stax into infinite mana combos, but that was no fun for anyone. Now its more ramp like crazy and copy or steal everyone elses threats. Still strong, but since I dont have any interaction that isnt steal or copy a permanent im vulnerable to board wipes and certain artifact hate cards. I also intentionally included 0 tutors and 0 infinite combos.
