How much money do Supercross racers really make and why don't we talk about it?!
With the 2024 AMA Supercross season only days away, are we in for the best season ever? Or will it come down to just a handful of winners like it always does? Supercross commentator Jason Weigandt weighs in...
Jason Weigandt is for me the voice of Motocross. For 2024 he finally gets his chance to step into the booth during Supercross, and it makes an epic season just that touch bit sweeter. I planned to get a lot into Weige's back story, tell some stories from his 20+ year career, but that is going to have to wait for the next one! We spent 4 hours solving all of the real and imaginary problems of Supercross and it was unreal.
Before we get into this episode though, I wanted to share with you some awesome news regarding our first ever race, the Gypsy Tales 500.
Vurbmoto and Gypsy Tales are putting on an 8hr Grand Prix style event in Mesquite, NV. Using one of Gypsy’s favorite events, Australia’s Transmoto series, as inspiration, this will be an 8hr team or solo (for the Savages) race with your boys (or girls). The course will consist of a tamed down moto track and off-road loop, averaging 20 min lap times. The goal? Have fun, kick some beers and race your buddies. It’s worth noting this is a 125cc and Up race, no mini bikes allowed.
As far as the course goes, it will be part moto, part off-road - Sunday’s loop will be a unique course with an average lap time of 20 minutes. The loop will include terrain for the average rider along with a tamed down motocross track with no mandatory jumps. Again, this is a vibe race and will be built for all rider disciplines.

The only reason people don't in the regular workplace is because the employer doesn't want you to. @@microsoft790 you gotta look at it like this, he doesn't always speak to what he knows. It's nice to have old pros like James up there for us guys that know a lot about the sport, but especially if we want the sport to grow, there has to be someone who conveys things in a way that outsiders can relate to. Weegs is as good of a public speaker as anyone, he's there in the role of "announce what is happening in a way that anyone can understand", and the vets are there to provide little details that mainly people who ride appreciate

@HeavyK_MXB
@HeavyK_MXB 9 месяцев назад
I don't think that's the reason, and that is just logical. I mean most other sports don't exactly have privateers, but say in the NFL right now a top tier starting QB is making around 50 million but the guy who bounces around as a free agent when someone needs a backup only makes 3-4 maybe 7-8 million. That's the equivalent to factory vs privateer, the reason it is so much more in the NFL is because they bring in so much more money. I think people forget that sometimes as well, I'd love to see the race payouts go up, but that can't happen until the sport gets bigger and is able to support bigger payouts.

@Davinhomx

I want riders salaries to go public too. We know that ik the modern times at least roczen had multi million per year contracts. Villopoto, dungey, stewart, reed had them aswell.... The reason why I want this to be public is for casuals. See rn it is just a bunch of guys riding on a track. If you make it public that for example jett gets (idk) 5 mil a year from honda....that makes it not a bunch of guys riding a track. That tells people that what this guy can do on this bike in this sport is worth more then 5 mil a year. He is a pro pro pro and a true expert in his field woch they can't just replace cause otherwise they would get a cheaper dude. They then migh actually go to watch a race at least on TV. And what the commentators then say about his style etc. actually becomes meaningfull to them. In short: making million dollar contracts public makes you sport emmedietly at least 5 times more legit to a casual. Cause the casual nowadays evaluates the talent of your field and sport in general by that. If several riders are worth more then a mil per year to manufacturers you emmediatly know that they are goated and way better then you are in what they do. And that makes them look twice

@@MrCycledude10 yeah. In this video they only talked about price money. While we know that tomac, roczen, jett all make millions solely cause of their contracts. And that's actually what's importand to a casual. It's cool if they win 1.4 mil of they win the supercross title. But that only really makes the deciding races more interesting to a casual. To know that their talent is worth money in contracts and to understand that this sport is a huge industry by that is what needs to be out out there. I get that this isn't an accurate example but shohei ohtani for example. His 700 mil contract. How many people are going to watch what he actually does for a living now. Bet the dodgers first game has a very decent amount of people infront of the TV

It's due to the descrepancy between those making the big bucks and those who have to buy their own race gas, along with everything else. In the ball sports everyone out there is making bank, so there's no need to be coy. If you qualify for a professional race, you should make enough to live comfortably. @tronmcrae

Ideally, but you have to consider viewership. NFL has way higher viewers, merch sales, ticket sales than SX or MX so they have far more revenue to play the players. The most expensive SX tickets are a couple hundred bucks, which is generally about the cheapest tickets you're going to find for an NFL game, going to over a thousand. Lots of other professional sports don't pay that well either.

Ultimately that’s right: let’s talk about the bonuses, let’s talk about what’s on the line when the guys are fighting for position etc. as long as it’s not ALL about the money each pass. However what each individual rider earns from their team is entirely their business. If they want to tell the press what they earn that’s their choice but no-one but the team and the rider has a right to that information.

I think you guys missed a huge point. For the same reasons CEO and C-Staff executives don't want their real income made public and that is the gap between the Factory Honda salary and the privateer who's literally assuming MORE risk because of less capable product and gear, on the same track, same conditions. At least a CEO probably has a Ivy League degree and makes "big decions", in Mx/Sx, they're all equal. It's a very, very poor distribution of money. The 1% earn about 95%, the rest get crumbs.

I remember talking to a rep at No Fear years ago right after Travis Pastrana went to Thor. When I said that sucks, he said “Well when you’re paying a guy $3m a year to sit on the couch, it’s not that big a loss.” That’s when I realized it’s not all manufacturer money but a lot of sponsor money. Think about all of the sets of gear just the regular rider has. The goggles, sunglasses, boots, then just even casual wear from their favorite brands. It’s a way bigger market. Most of the top guys probably have $200-500k salaries with sick bonuses for placing. Then the sponsor money on top of that. It’s a wide net they can cast. I think the cool thing about modern Mx is that you can have middle pack and privateer guys with social media channels that are monetized so at least they’re getting some more compensation there if they use it well.

I hate the big money being at the top of the heap. Yes the best guys should be racing for good money, but a $100,000 bonus or a $1M aren't that different to a guy like Jett Lawrence, but $10,000 compared to $1,000 IS a huge deal to 100 privateers.. If you want there to be lots of bikes that show up, you have to pay back through the field. It's only good for everyone and you don't make a couple kings slightly richer that were destined for that anyway.

@@francoisneveling3774 That's a great analogy I've never heard that one before. I come from the world of Sprint Car Dirt Racing, the Knoxville Nationals every year draw the most drivers/teams, BECAUSE that event pays more TO START in the A Feature than normal weekly races pay to WIN. It's 10k base pay to win weekly with the national series, and it's 15k just to get Last at the Knoxville Nationals. So the result is that you end up with the biggest car count for that event. People who think the bike is doing half the work are smoking rocks. They should be paid just as much as MLB or NFL. Riding a 450 at Pro level. Phenomenal athlete's taking massive risk. But! I understand they don't have the same viewership. Wich I feel like could be much better than it is.

Secret because privateers are getting destroyed. But F1 doesn’t have privateers so that’s what we are trending towards
@jaybee8786
@jaybee8786 9 месяцев назад
That’s not necessarily true. In F1 a lot of guys get a ride depending on who’s backing them. lance stroll or Nikita Mazepin are good examples. They’re not exactly privateers, but their sponsors(daddy’s) virtually buy them a seat via sponsoring the team, they may get a relatively small salary( $200-300k) but they’re not in the same league as a Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton.

So... We all know that the rider is 95 percent of this. The bikes are all good, but not too different. A good rider will do well, no matter what he is riding. I remember seeing a video...many years ago. It featured a local pro rider, on Ivan Tedesco's factory bike....and Tedesco, on a stock XR 650L. Tedesco stiil was faster, than the local pro...on basically...a fat dual sport bike... on an outdoor track. Hitting big doubles, and skimmin whoops. So yeah...pay all these guys!!!

Ouch! As an Aussie seeing my favourite SX rider standing beside a RR is a bit yuck. I totally get that he has earned it, I genuinely do. But FFS buy another house or an MX facility or something that will continue to make you cash my brother. A RR doesn’t impress me. Clever decision’s and continued success impresses me. Good luck for 2024.. I wish you the best

Golf may be lame, but it has an infinitely bigger audience that MX does. The money is proportional to the exposure. LIV has brought golf into the mainstream across the world and the money paid to the athletes is a fraction of what the sponsors are bringing in as a result. My son raced nationals for years, he was highly ranked at his time too. We had great sponsors that did great things for us and he was only 12-13 years old at the time. However, the companies sponsoring him and the people way more popular than him weren't anywhere near as big as the sponsors that back the golfing community. They simply don't have the marketing budget commiserate with those huge corporations. What is changing though and this will benefit everyone in the sport, is the mass social media following of the likes of Deegan and the Lawrence's. They will pave the way for new sponsors to come in to the sport and spend money on it. 2024 is going to be a huge year for this sport and if the riders and teams play their cards right, don't get too greedy along the way, there will be big $$'s coming their way. edit to add: I would venture to guess that at least 75-80% of the companies that are involved in MX are based out of California. A state that taxes companies at the highest rate in the nation. They have to overcome that burden, pay themselves and stay operational above and beyond paying athletes huge salaries. They would do themselves a favor getting out of that state and exploring opportunities outside of it that would make them exceedingly more liquid. My $.02.

Should be announcing riders salaries and purses and bonuses. How much the teams are spending etc.. Its entertainment and racing we want to be in awe of the pressures involved and thats what make it exciting and taken more seriously. Most casuals put in the same group as a monster jam show and not competitive racing

In my opinion with the money being public would put a very very horrible rep than it already is on the privateers cause they don’t get bonuses they may break even making the night show and they don’t talk about every racer has to pay to race this does not happen in any other professional sport so you got 1-10 smooth sailing financially and the rest well your here but at what cost

Privateers paying their way happens in loads of other sports, it’s definitely not just Supercross. Not everyone will have their dreams come true unfortunately. That being said, I think most people would be more than happy to see the privateers get a helping hand from the organisers and manufacturers.

And a problem with million $ bonus’s for Webb Anderson and Barcia is that it makes it easier for them to cheat by taking certain riders out these 3 have a long history of of moto violence. Barcia claimed his taking Mookie out was all about a championship which , here we go earns him a $500,000 bonus if all things, a financial fraud was committed.
