Finally! Elon Musk Just Revealed What Exactly Happened On 1st Starship Catching Attempt...
Oh my god.
For the first time ever-unprecedented!
This is truly history in the making for the aerospace industry.
By overcoming countless technological challenges, SpaceX has taken its first monumental step toward full rocket reusability. That incredible achievement? Catching Super Heavy with the Mechazilla Arm.
This moment marks the realization of Elon Musk’s vision.
So how did SpaceX accomplish this? How will this breakthrough shape the future of the company and the Starship project? And how did Elon Musk react to seeing his vision become reality?
Let’s dive into all of this on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Finally! Elon Musk Just Revealed What Exactly Happened On 1st Starship Catching Attempt...
After much anticipation, Flight 5 officially lifted off at the beautiful dawn of Boca Chica beach.
At 7:25 a.m. CDT, after fuel loading and water deluge activation, Starship Flight 5 took off with its usual impressive thrust. The ascent was smooth with no engine failures, a crucial factor since the Raptor engines are vital for navigation and landing.
At T+00:02:40, Starship separated from Super Heavy B12 using the hot staging system, and B12 began its descent after reaching 96 kilometers in altitude.
Finally! Elon Musk Just Revealed What Exactly Happened On 1st Starship Catching Attempt...
The descent process was fast, with B12 experiencing rapid decompression. At T+00:06:07, a new camera angle provided a great view of the Booster’s fast descent, still traveling over 3,200 kilometers per hour at 15 kilometers altitude.
As it neared the landing, the engines glowed red, and at T+00:06:30, the inner and middle ring engines activated, slowing the Booster down from over 1,200 kilometers per hour. By T+00:06:37, only three inner engines were working as it approached the tower.

Several notable difference between flight 4 & 5. 1. Slightly slower less aggressive takeoff but did you notice "no ripples" in the ocean this time. 2. 100% booster performance on both vehicles and smoother on/off processes 3. Hot staging separation was flawless 4. Upgraded tiles and overall far more robust vehicle in this iteration of Starship 5. Did they just catch a 10 story rocket booster with a mechanized tower? yes, yes they did. 6. After nailing the landing in the assigned zone, "i believe" they blew up the ship on purpose since they had no plans on recovery. Awesome damn flight, amazing work. Great engineering in pushing human progress forward.

Im 45, I saw the challenger explode live, I watched the Berlin wall fall and then the Soviet Union (which at the time seemd as likely as the US dissolving) I didnt see the planes hit live but Iwatched them fall. I watched in shock and awe at the unmatchable might of the US combined forces turn the 4th largest army on the planet into cinders, I watched Kaddafi butt-graped with an iron bar as entire nations were over run by isil. I watched as the greates leader of my time was elected then I watched an election get stolen. Of all these things I think this might be the second craziwest thing ive ever seen, so far nothing has been near the insanity of waking up to 911....even now my chest gets tight. Watching those poor people jump from the tallest building in the US before it was "dropped" right into its own basement, then tower 7 ...for some reason. This though, this is th e opposite, this is hope and accomplishment. What a feat, what awe inspiring achievments...My humble hats off to you sir(Elon), for what little it is worth.

We need intellectual wins. War is not about teams. The media that pushes propaganda for the elite loves to try and make us feel prideful about winning wars. Killing children which is rarely talked about, is the fault of proud and powerful men and women who's agenda is....well evil. This???? This is power. Sadly, those elites are trying to find a way to arm this beautiful technology already.

As a 4-year-old, I remember watching the moon landing in 1969. Today, it is one of my earliest clear memories. All the (Literally) decades since then, I became deflated by the American space program, because it so obviously no longer dared to push the boundaries of daring exploration. today, I watched the Starship complete a total package of successes, the climax of which was the return, and successful "catch" of the booster, by the Mechzilla Chop Sticks! In 1969, I was too young to appreciate the gravity and triumph of what was done. At 59, I had goosebumps and tears flowing, because I now know, the daring and courage and engineering prowess is fully back, in humanity's quest for a future, instead of a nostalgic past. At the end of such a magnificent journey, short as it was, Spock would say to all those who labored for this victory-- "Live Long and Prosper."

It's wrong to say that the landing of Starship was a dramatic one. Yes, there was explosions, but that is entirely impossible to avoid. I don't know if you have seen explosions in ironworks factories? That is the result of water introduced into molten metal. Water expands about 10K times when heated to its evaporation point. If done very fast and with larger volumes, an explosion is inevitable. Starship came in very hot, and was firing its engines all the way down to the water surface. Very hot rocket engines, a very hot spaceship hull and dip it in cold water. KABOOOOM What's crucial is that Space-X did seem to have done substantial improvements to the heat tiles and flap hinges, since there was only a small amount of burn through. They also landed the ship exactly on target, as was their goal. Thank you very much for the video, keep up your hard work and reporting.

NOTE: flight 4 had the exact same fire on the refueling port section. I suspect SpaceX engineers expected that on flight 5. If they didn't, they're missing critical information, but I'm certain they expected that.

In the realm of scientific achievements within the field of Space Exploration, October 13th 2024 will grace the history books for being equally important as that of July 20th, 1969 when man first walked on the Moon. Just as NASA's engineers were able to perform the impossible back then, what Elon Musk' SpaceX' engineers accomplished was also nothingless than miraculous. They'll have to rewrite the textbooks on this one. I was in awe when I witnessed Niel Armstrong make his 'One Small Step...' speech 55 yrs ago; I am equally stoked as I witnessed this huge, huge accomplishment the SpaceX team pulled off today. Through God's providence, Elon and team made America proud today. They can claim the title as leader in this industry and rightfully so. Well done & Kudos to all involved.

Most of the flames post-landing were coming from the methane vent - the craft was venting (not leaking) methane, and in the circumstances of re-entry or a propulsive landing (or both) that methane would be ignited. This bullshit of declaring that inadequate fuel to slow re-entry speeds is impossible due to fuel/weight to make orbit without the means to have enough left to re-enter is absurd. Re-entry damage can be solved by using multi-launch projects (now that reusability of craft is possible) to also refuel orbiting fuel stations even if in small amounts at first. The Mars program calls for immediate refueling upon gaining orbit. This reduces the terrible destruction due to heat. Sliding down sand paper on your ass at 100mph is worse than sliding down sand paper at 1mph. This is technology we should have been developing from the start of space shuttle missions if only into one fuel site in small amounts for safety reasons.

What museum gets the first booster caught on a tower? Smithsonian seems obvious, but do they have enough money to build something big enough to house it?
@SterileNeutrino

Likely none - given that this is supposed to be fully reusable, I would bet they take it apart and run any part that is relevant through Xray to see whether there is material fatigue.

Two days ago I was thinking: Crew 8 return, Europa Clipper, and IFT-5 all on the same day? That's a lot of bandwidth. It appears that IFT-5 was the priority. And what a resounding success. So Crew-8 and Europa Clipper tomorrow. Still and amazing accomplishment.

Yeah! Starship booster recovery via tower catch was even the single biggest obstacle to prove viability of the program.
