Tyler I'm 66 and still miss my grand parents alot of good memories. And both my parents are now gone I still get teary eyed thinking about them. That was the good old days.
Well said and to that end… Save that post! Find a fun spot for it and dig a hole and save it for the kids - carve some initials in it. Carve everybody's initials that have had the pleasure of enjoying the ranch! BTW: That's a Quality, Handsome Chunk of Concrete!
I do, too, especially bottlefeeding calves with my grandpa; can you pull fishing with grandpa; and making the best sugar cookies with grandma ever and her ice tea… Oh, and gardening with grandma and making the biggest flower bouquets ever😊❣️❣️❣️
You know what you are doing Tyler, you work your farm like your Grandpa did, and now you do things your way. Always do things how you like to do them. I would buy a calf or cow that is not black, but I do love the blotchy faces. Your herd is perfect.
Tyler, Your herd looks fantastic! Babies are alert, healthy and a splash of beautiful colors. You are too nice to say anything but, no one has the right to criticize you in anything, period. For those of you who read this. Please try and remember, it’s wonderful to be interactive and share your thoughts and experiences. However, please do it with kindness. A message goes a lot further to those that we talk too when we do it with gentle mouth.
We've had a number of calves with eye problems like that over the years. Generally result of infection somewhere. Two years ago we had one that was really bad off- nearly comatose- from a navel infection. She went blind for about two weeks from the infection. Eventually, with some antibiotics and care, she made a full recovery and her vision came back completely.
You could use that old post as a parking stop, or a birdhouse stand, or some other kind of yard art; for sentimental reasons! 😊 I sure enjoy your channel!
I watch your farming because of sentimental values,I have for my grandfather. He was old time farmer.Reused everything, or fixed anything and everything. He taught his boys to do,and farm the same.He had holes in pants, and shirts even though he had new ones.Would sit on back bed of trucks to exercise his arthritic knees. He could hardly walk when passed, his knees were so bowed.Drove tractor every where. Those were good old days, miss so much.I cry everytime I think about him,and my grandmother, parents of 10 children, only one aunt left, baby of family she is 83and has battled colon, and liver cancer.Keep farming ,farmer Tyler!!!Keep clinging to those memories.
I too totally agree with the Angus Marketing opinion! Busy day, a lot of driving for you! You are so close to finishing up the chute install! It's funny how inanimate objects can trigger memories! Wonder what your Grandpa would say about the changes on the FTR, I can only guess, few words and great smiles!
Thank you for sharing your busy day with us it’s so interesting and fun to see all the calves and bottle calves ❤hope that little calf finally figures out the back nipples eventually…❤
I am 76 and when I was a little girl…about 5, I used to help my Papaw Henry Beaufford feed the day old calves that he bought but they didn’t have plastic bottles in 1952. He had metal buckets that had long rubber nipples attached to the side of the metal bucket. I loved helping him feed the calves.
I like to mix half venison with half fatty ground beef for the Chilli I make. It makes the best Chilli I've ever tasted! (If any of you are deerhunters) I know cattlemen don't want to hear that but beef has gotten a so high lately...
Memories are a great thing, even if it’s an old post. Great job on the timid calves! Big day Tyler. Congrats on the addition and placement of the new shute too! God’s blessings!❤❤❤
I feel your correct on your thinking about the Angus, My taste buds don't think it lives up to the hype! "marketing" ! My personal taste, when they lower the price I'll eat.
Full day of getting “stuff” done!! Always takes longer than what you think it should …. But feels so good to check it off the list. Well done Tyler; memories and all. Great video.
My Favorite beef is hereford. I think it's delicious. The friendliest cow and the best tasting. Which is your favorite "steak" or tasting beef? Actually I never liked a Angus, I actually thought they were sorta crazy! Thank you for being a great cow Rancher. Because we did it all, vegetables, hay, cattle, pork and tobacco we were always called Farmers.
I have been sentimental over more " dumb " things than a post. My grandpa dad and i were insperatable my entire life because of the love for farming. My dad passed away last year and my grandpa will soon be 90. There isnt an inch of the property that i dont have a memory of the three of us. I do everything alone now and can only cause they taught me everything i know. Love your videos and the way you do things!
Your conversation about black angus vs. champagne or red calves selling for different prices is so spot on…we’ve had the same exact conversation around here….but sadly it is true. Black sell for more, at least here in NW Arkansas they do…sometimes by quite a bit. My husband and I have compromised as I like a herd like yours but he wants marketable. We run a black angus bull and I still have some of my favorite (colorful) mommas. Buyer’s are really missing out because our charolais cross calves make fantastic butcher steers…can’t see the color hanging weight…anyway, it was nice hearing your common sense approach on it too. You have a great looking herd. Cull that momma (can’t remember the number) with the bag hanging to the ground and you’ll be set!
Tyler, I for one Love sing all the different colored cows out on the grassy hill tops & enjoy watching him frolicking down the hillside. It’s a beautiful site. The only person who stuck on Angus cows are the snobs you think Angus beef is the only ones who think Angus is the only way to go. The rest of us just like good beef!! You did a fine job, catching those baby calves and tagging their ears! I think we should give a name to the bottle babies especially the three you’ve been feeding! I’m glad the baby with the eye issue is doing much bette😊❣️❣️❤️❤️
I was going to say, I remember the commercials with I think Sam Eliot and his deep voice talking about Black Angus beef. I also remember thinking, at the time ' what a crock of sheet ' lol We always had Herford's and the meat grading depends on the feed no mater what breed.
Loved the tag along today, that ribeye steak sure looked good! The calves all different colors are so cute. Masie helping in the garden is adorable. And Belle and Callie always make me smile.😎
Use grandpa's pole and use it as little end table on you new sitting/grilling area. I have my grandma''s canister set, every time I take them down to clean I'm transformed into her kitchen and I can smell the spices in her pantry. Memories are something, they let you time travel.
I Love watching your videos you are a kid and man your videos are not stressful and I Love the way you watch after and care for all your animals and your family ❤
There's always plenty to do on FTR. What a beautiful group of calves! Five to go. Seems like it has been a condensed delivery year for the calves just like you planned with both bulls doing their job.
You hit the nail on the head with the Black Angus marketing. Around here (Kansas) anything not black takes a hard hit. Black baldies do better than red or anything else. Glad it's not so bad in your area. I agree with adding new genetics to your herd. I believe in hybrid vigor. We put our chicks outside at fully feathered, about 3 weeks if the weather isn't terrible or rainy. :) Your boards didn't break because you had new ones!! LOL I get the sentimental thing. Perfectly natural to remember your grandfather in those kinds of ways.
Memories with grandpa are always sweet they had a very nice grandpa didn't farm though took us fishing a bit when he was laid up with his heart problems
Very excited to see the new shoot in place soon! With all these expensive additions I suppose the ranch will be in your family a long time. Hopefully your children will have your passion too.
My dads been gone 4 yrs my mom 2 yrs it’s hard some little thing can make you start thinking and cry my grandmas been gone for years but I still get tears nothing wrong with that it’s nice to have good family good memories
This has to be difficult to do all of this work by yourself…..you are an amazing man, Tyler. Your wife is a lucky woman. You should do some videos of her canning and freezing when your garden comes in. I love canning and have been canning for over 50 years now.
Just a thought.... make your little bummer cloudy eye calf a bottle calf and get big bag momma to raise your two aggressive/healthy bottle calves? Put both of them on her. You've convinced me that you're not afraid of hard work to keep this cow and letting her raise her last calf... let her finish out by raising two? Also, I might be missing it but what are you doing for the cows who have dead calves? Why not do the work of finding another calf for them to raise? Maybe you are and I'm just missing it? I was raised on a dairy so I always have milk production on my mind. So if a calf dies it sure seems like a waste to let the cow eat for free and not contribute her milk production to raising a calf (or two?). Sure looks like beautiful morning this time of year!! I'm super jealous!! Great job on everything Tyler👍👍
Hi FTR what beautiful looking cows ! It is amazing how these beautiful animals know who takes care of them the cows don’t seem to worried that you are around them nature can teach us so many things if we would just take the time! take care
Oh, I can’t wait for you to get the Aeroquip installed! It’s gonna make a world a difference for you! Love your channel, love your work, love your ingenuity
I've also always heard that black animals bring more. Recently, I took in 3 finished steers to auction. One was a white Charolais, one was black angus and one was a Holstein. All three brought just about the same, within 5 cents per pound.
Tyler sure appreciate your videos. I grew up on dairy and hogs. No longer farming but I miss it. It's such a blessing to have good wholesome farming to show my children. Take care. We sure appreciate all you do and for how openly you share. 😊
Love to see your daughter helping out in the garden while your wife does the bottle feeding. I hear what you said about your grand father putting in the post. Some things we never forget, it’s a lovely memory for you to have. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m a Hereford guy myself and I agree with everything you said for the most part. But, you could put a black hided pure bred Simmental and get all the benefits of heterosis as well as the black hide premium. And there is a discount for colored calves whether you like to admit it or not. Black baldies mixed in with all black are fine, but when you add the smokies and reds, buyers will Still buy, just not as much as a straight run if black and black baldy. Facts are facts. But as my mentor always said, raise what you like to look at and damn everyone else. :) cheers
A full day of work accomplished, what a sense of satisfaction. That post that has sentimental value, why not cut off the rotten part and incorporate it into your new cooking area. A holder for a bell or something else that needs strength to keep it in place. Then it will always be near. Smokey calves look so awesome in the herd. Maybe they can be next year's steers for the steer pasture.
My Dad raised mixed cattle in Minnesota and Missouri for 50+ years. He ALWAYS got better prices for his mixed calves. One year the bull was Simmental. They ran the calves thru first and Dad’s bull topped the market.
One of my uncles always straightened the nails and reused them. He learned it from my grandpa and it was reinforced by a guy with whom he did carpentry.
Great job changing those two calves, Tyler. You’re getting good at communicating with your animals I am excited about tomorrow’s video when you move your new shoot and get to use it for the first time. I like the idea of the back patio with the overhang roof. It’ll be very handy for you, as you said to harvest your Ables and chickens and turkeys, etc. And it’ll be nice to have a few chairs out there to watch the sun go down at the end of the day or the opposite, have coffee with your wife before the morning stop and watch the sun come up maybe. Things are still a little quiet. I just love your video channel.!!!
The best thing is to always improve your herd going forward I showed black angus in FFA i loved my black gold cows ....they usually all raised two healthy calves dad would go to the dairy and hopefully find some back baldy calves. And we had. Collars and chains for the calves after a few days we took them off and moms loved thiee adoptees ..
Around my area, the beef cattle are mostly Angus or black herfords with white face. When I was a kid, this area was all dairy, but unfortunately, most of the dairy farms are gone. My cousin has one of the few dairy farms left. Yep one thing about farming and ranch is things don't always go as planned. I always like how you think things through.
I'm looking forward to seeing your new squeeze chute in place. I know you have really been anticipating it and will make handling the cattle much easier. Hope all goes well with the install and that you can check off another box on your never ending to do list. Stay safe, young man.
When the power company replaces power poles in the area they will let any of us utilize the old posts. It is great way of saving a little money on fence posts that have H or N Brace and where ever a stong arm is needed.😊
I am new to your channel and have been binge-watching for a week! As soon as I could walk I was on the tractor with my grandpa. He would pick me up sit me on his right leg and off we went. I can remember looking up at the cows in the barn, they were loud! That was 65 years ago. You have a very sound head on your shoulders and make your own decisions with deep conviction. GREAT JOB!!! Thank you for everything you do, that is long hard hours. Prayers.
On the beef that was processed , on the hoof how much was its weight ? You really know what you are doing , congratulations , your style is amazing , stay safe , enjoy !
Hay Tyler cattle and calves looking good looks like you are going to have a busy summer hard work has just begun for you but you always manage thank you for sharing blessings to you and your family
Pleasure watching your latest video, FTR. I’ve wondered if you processed meat for your family. When it comes to Grandpas, it is easy to have emotional moments. I often remember the great times I had with my gramps pounding Blue Ribbon trout streams in Montana.
Tyler most farmers would just chop and burn that old post but a good sand blast and clean would make a nice feature somewhere on your farm and cant wait to see the chute in place thanks
