Solo Winter Jeep Camping / First Snow Fall

Back into the wilderness again for the first snow fall of winter, solo in the Jeep Cherokee XJ. This time i'm in a remote part of the North on a network of logging roads. Its November and the temps are beginning to drop despite it being a very mild winter so far. I'm about 500 meters up on the top of a large hill and the temps at night drop just below -7. The diesel heater is going strong and its surprisingly toasty in the roof tent although the sound is like sleeping on an airplane so I shut it off before bed.

I found your channel through an Orwellian accident. I had been conversing about putting side compartments in the rear windows of an XJ and here I am a couple of weeks and several videos later. I appreciate your presentation style, and your language and mannerisms remind me a lot of "Abroad In Japan" here on RU-vid. Thank you for the content and keep living the dream!

On my early age grandad always talk about people who die and make noises in forest. I know he say that to prevent us to go there at dark due to the bears. When I grow I got close to the noise of those ghost he said only to find that crows are very intelligent birds which can repeat almost any noise. That night crow make noise like a human but it was just a crow.

Yes when you farted , then said show yourself I thought the worst obviously, a trip into the 🎄 was required 🤣🤣 on a serious note,you showed your rota pax system freezing up, I run a ATV, 70ltr water tank and pump in my landy , with charcoal filter.bought new, and an accessory for a quad bike,originally (sits across the backrack) for applying pesticides etc,works a treat,and easy access to clean the inside of the tank out,the pump is powerful enough to shower under,with an adapted shower head, installed 8years ago with no issues. Sits across the floor behind the drivers seat.
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
Sadly a trip in his layer in my most vulnerable state! That sounds like a nice idea though. So the tank is under your seat and the pump can fill that tank up and you can pump water out for use? My main concern is freezing. I normally use snow in the winter and carry no water at all but it would be nice to have something on board for when you want quick water.

@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
Tack för tipsen. Jag tror att det att se filmer på svenska har hjälpt med engelska undertexter. Jag känner att det blir bättre och bättre. Det är grundläggande men som du säger, att prata med andra ofta är nyckeln. Tack för att du tittade.

I like it because it is completely portable can be set up either the 7 foot or 9 foot direction, it covers the rear hatch area with room to sit out as well. Might give you some ideas. the other nice thing for me is you can move it from vehicle to vehicle and much cheaper than other awning options.

Having followed you now for a few years, it’s nice to see you in your element, enjoying things on your own terms. But knowing what kind of pressure comes (internally) with a high subscriber base, does it make you nervous as the count on this channel goes up?
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
Yeah a little bit. It was quite a weight off my shoulders when I started a new channel. I guess I've learn from my old mistakes and I said to myself if I made another channel I would just enjoy it for me with no pressure. So far its been good fun and pretty chilled with enjoyable filming also. I think the difference with this channel is that I'm filming things I'm doing anyway and it's a mixture of workshop and outdoors. With mcqbushcraft I often had to come up with content and go out of my way to make it. It took huge efforts and it stopped being fun for me. The average viewers were really nice but bushcraft has a lot of unrealistic expectations about fantasy survival and nonsense.

@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
Tack.

Just a healthy reminder. If EV's are the future? Then how does EV Camping , heating & cooking work? And these tents. They should have 2 compartments. One where you take off your shoes. And one where you sleep or stay in. The other thing is that all of these pop up tents should have some kind of built in canopy so that rain, snow and moisture in general do affect the occupant. Lastly, Earth send Mylar balloons to space to land on other worlds. You would think they would make a great pop up tent that would simply fill with air and have rigid structures that would air up and provide a better user experience by now. The other thing that puzzles me is that if you are going to be hauling all this gear that adds extra weight to the rear axle, it would actually be better to pull a small trailer made out of carbon fiber/ Aluminum with large roller wheels so that it does not allow your car to sink or get stuck as easy. With the wide roller style wheels, you can easily push it around as well without the fear of it sinking in the mud. This distributes the weight on your rig, and gives you far better options for water storage, Fuel etc. I understand a lot of you like camping I'm just a little bit perplexed at the technology really hasn't changed all that much in the last 40 years or more.

Hey, I couldn't tell you how it would work with EV's as I have no experience of them, especially in an overland camping setup. You don't see too many EVs used for long distance work up here due to the lack of infrastructure and the cold. Perhaps if they designed a SUV with a suitable battery and the body panels of the car were all solar panels then long distance summer travel could be possible as well as heating and cooking? I guess time will tell but my guess is they better fix the energy crisis first because sustainability isnt on anyone's side to support the fantasy future they have outline for us. The thing about the tents with two compartments, one for shoes ect, is all specific to brand and size. Some do, some don't. Mine have bags that hang on the outside that you put shoes in but when we camp as a family we just bring crocks and take our outdoor boots off in the awning room, put the crocks on and put them in the boot bags because it doesn't matter if they are cold or wet. The tents are also fully weather proof and snow, rain, wind etc don't effect the occupant. You can buy extra canopy's and things that clip on them but to be honest we never used ours much on our old tent as its just a fly trap in the summer and more stuff in the winter. They do make pop up tents that fill with air but the plus side of an aluminium hard shell is its ability to be loaded onto up to around 100kg so you can mount solar panels, canoe etc on top of it. the blowups aren't very good at this time but I guess they will get better. Mate your questions..... Sip of tea. I'm guessing your offroad experience isnt up there. Pulling a trailer doesn't make off-roading easier and its fucking heavy with all the gear in it. It sinks in snow, mud and soft tracks, its an absolute fucker to move on your own and its often a matter of disconnecting the trailer, driving up tracks and then trying to turn around to pull the trailer up the obstacle with the winch. I know from experience because I wheel with a guy with the setup you have talked about and although you can do a lot more than you would expect with a trailer, its not going to make my life easier. I upgrade my rear axle about four years ago along with many other things, weight distribution across the vesicle is key, not much is in the back of mine. Most sits forward of the rear wheels. Anyway fuck me, I got through it. I think you should start your own business, maybe call it 'Mickeys Ant Fuckery' you could have an logo on your van with you arched back, thrusting forwards holding your dinkus with a ammunition belt of ants being fed into the side of it blasting out spent ant cases like your just MG42'ing the shit out of people, questions, observations, suggestions!! You get um Mickey! Technology has changed a lot if you look at materials, weights and such but also some of it doesn't need to change that much because it works and its affordable unlike a lot of things you just said. DONT REPLY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MICKEY I DONT HAVE THE TIME FOR THIS. And don't take offense because I'm joking with you

What I do to calm myself down, is to carry my Glock on me. Too bad you guys can not really do that in Europe. A mountain lion, a bear, or a freak with an axe, I know that I have a chance. A pretty good chance with a caliber .45 on me. Awesome vid and I love your jeep man! Makes me want to modify my xj too. :)

Great video. Have you thought about using a portable electric induction stovetop? $75 on Amazon. You have the portable battery so it’s basically free fuel after you buy it

Thanks for watching. ITs the power usage that I worry about. It certainty would cut down on clutter like gas bottles etc... I will have to look into it as maybe there is a good solution.

Thanks for subscribing Dan! Its taken me about 7 years to build it to this point, it came standard with a diesel in as its one of the Euro Export Jeeps. I've got most of the build videos on a playlist here - ru-vid.com/group/PLQQXgt9BFgASOP_cvdHa-nAJEthHsIJRx It goes way back mind so some of the early stuff might not be so interesting. Anyway thanks again!
