That is a handsome chickshaw. You and Gina are great carpenters. I laughed when you said "she's rustic" about the ramp; my father used to say that! He was super handy making things and inventing; had some patents. Another lovely video. I so enjoy them.

G'day Al. Idea for the chicken compost heap. Imagine the square made by the fence around the coop. Now if you start dumping composting material in one corner for the chickens to process. Then when you move the coop rotate the fence around the compost heap, so that it acts like an anchor point for the moving chicken run. Then tighten it up to just the compost area in winter. So in spring you start the process again in a different area and you have the compost to mulch the garden and greenhouse. Let the chickens do the work of mixing and managing your compost heap.

Great build. Love your attention to detail, especially in the measurements. Everything comes together beautifully at the end with no mistakes. A safety concern: Perhaps cover the sharp open edges of the handle in case you get too close if you need to go to the controller.

Al, while you were showing your new chicken tractor, I was thinking you could cut out the handle section of the nesting boxes, and that way when you collect the eggs you don' t have to remove the whole nest box, just reach in and get the eggs! Otherwise great job on the improvements to the " shaw". Justin has already put the handle on the other side of his shaw and has his door on the back. He also added a hitch to hook up to his runabout vehicle. Both houses look great!! I think the chickens will love it! Hopefully they all get in before the door close, it is soooo slow! Here' s to happy chickens and God Bless!

Dear Lumnah Acres, don't waste your spinach just b'c it bolted. This is a good thing. If you can set a space for growing wild spinach and you will have early spinach weeks before you plant. My grandmother had it growing thru the snow by the creek and it was the best I have ever had. First thing we ate out of the garden besides winter onions was bolted spinach. You can gather the seeds from them too and never have to buy again.
@rachelm7525

That's what I like to hear- no waste! Did you know, by the way, that you can eat carrot-tops? They're full of vitamin C. Just use sparingly, sprinkle finely, like a herb. 🙂

We have lost hens and a rooster to skunks trying to get to get to the eggs and opossums have just gotten in and killed chickens by pulling their heads off and only carrying off one to eat. The worse was when I had to pick up about half our half grown chickens and their heads. We finally got that one as it was coming out of a small gap under the door. So you're very smart to look for ANY small gap.

Have you thought about building your pile in rows. Aim for a pile 5 ft. tall. Either after your pile cools down or week or 2 roll you pile along one side. The idea is to move the outside of the pile to the inside while placing the bottom of the pile on the top. For building your pasture you can walk(roll) your pile across the pasture. Food piles for you chickens should be cold piles. Use leaves and wood chips to form 4 to 5 foot piles in cages like you do now. You don't want them to heat up, this is where the bugs come in. Start collecting leaves in the fall and build your piles. It's important to let them sit all winter. By the middle of the next fall the pile will be full of bugs, worms and grubs. I usually get a lot Pill bugs (Rollie Pollies.) You won't have to put you chicken feed on the pile to get your chickens to work it either.

You are looking for Neodymium magnets with the mounting hole for a screw already in them as drilling them is not easy and two sided tape will fail at the worst time. They are much stronger then the normal cabinet magnets and shape only matters on what the metal they are sticking to is if it shows. A magnetic parts tray is a good addition to the tools as you can use it as you take something apart to stick all the screws, washers and nuts to not loose them or you can use them to hold driver bits in a tool belt to not have them lost in a fold or fall out.

Gooooooood Evening Al , Gina & Olivia , Your automatic , mobile chicken coop is only partially automatic. Just the door. A very nice feature by the way. I have a roof like yours. ( semi-clear fiberglass. ) , installed with about a 5 degrees slope. Rainwater and snow melt run down the channels into a fabricated rain gutter thence into a funnel ( a 3" to 1/2" reducer ) and into a 1/2 " pvc pipe which goes to a hole in the top of a 5 gallon bucket. Water nipples are attached into the bucket. The bucket is of course inside of the mobile coop. All self contained , gravity powered , filled by Nature every time it rains or mists and even with a heavy dew. The water bucket has never gone dry. If it overflows , I don't care. It just goes onto the ground. I did not even cement the joints together. I may need to take it apart someday. There is no water pressure to speak of so the joints do not leak. Even if they did I would not care that much. The chickens always have a drink available and I don't have to carry water to them. I give them feed in a similar way. A 4" length of pvc pipe with an elbow on the bottom. It is attached to the side of the coop with the bottom entering through a hole cut in the wire. It is not fully automatic as I have to refill it about once or twice a week. Which beats everyday.

Some N35 magnets will do the trick for the supports, be sure to buy extra, they're super handy. That's the nicest chicken tractor I've seen to date, that thing is awesome!

Just a thought, but you could put a pool noodle on the pull bar of the new chicken shaw and it would make it easier on the hands and belly❣️ Love your videos, God bless you Lumnah family🥰

Magnet idea: wall mount knife magnets are quite strong. All you would need is a proper metal strip for it to latch onto. Just a thought. Also, perhaps running the cord from the door through some kind of pipe (metal or PVC) would protect it from the elements and maybe curious chickens? Blessings.

If landscaping /maintenance is popular in the area there should be drop off points that collect all the trimmings and turn it into soil.You may be able to get some compost there.Possibly add in some offal from a local butcher.

I enjoyed watching you build this "chick-shaw". It's quite ingenious! I wondered if it was your own design, but you cleared that up at the end, when you said it was a Joel Salatin design that you tweaked with a few of your own ideas. I just started learning about Joel and his farm recently through Mike the Fit Farmer's videos. You guys are all awesome!

neodymium (or rare earth) magnets are incredibly strong - I use little 5x1 mm dots that hold on earrings nicely through the thickness of my lobe! A half inch washer type would probably be strong enough, if you have to order online, and probably cope with all the bouncing around.
