The fridge: You could have so easily done the "cooking show" trick, a little video of the trimming and shaping, then skip to the final 'perfect fit' shot. Thanks for sharing the iterations. Things take as long as they take. That is part of it. Thanks also for sharing the tension between the two of you on aesthetics vs getting stuff done.

At first I thought maintaining the natural grains of the planks as they grew together would be beautiful, but seeing how you arranged the wood in your final design was stunning! And great job fitting the fridge!

I worked for years framing homes of all sizes and styles. As soon as it was time to add interior 'aesthetics' to the homes our crew would move on to the next home. I was always motivated and enjoyed visiting the homes in my spare time to see the other craftsman adding tile, kitchen counters, appliances, interior trim, ceiling and wall textures and paint. The longer I went without seeing the finished homes the more I lost interest in my area of expertise. Of coarse it was also nice to know adding an extra stud in this corner or next to the edge of a tub or shower could help other craftsman with their jobs but seeing the finished work was a great motivator for me.

A now departed German friend of mine, Klaus Doll was an amazing repairer and builder of mostly acoustic stringed instruments. When building he seemed to spend a painful amount of time with bits of wood, not just looking but tapping and knocking on them. I did learn why and the beauty he found in the wood was stunning.

An old refrigeration mechanic recommends the foam needs an air space whether it is closed or open cell foam and the foil is more important than the foam thickness because without the airspace the temperature differential will cause condensation in a humid environment. The foil is a radiant barrier from hot to cold. No matter how thick the foam is there is a temperature differential which will cause mold to form between the two mediums.

Great work on the fridge. I do many projects that kick my butt like this. It is all worth it in the end. My only suggestion would be to add some felt or any non squeak material to the top edge of the pink foam where it will make contact with the counter top. If not you might hear it squeak as the foam rubs against the plywood in rough seas.

Hi from New Zealand. Your boat is coming along nicely and one does have these times when things aren't as exciting as the could be. I found the same when I was building our 9.5 meter yacht on the front lawn of our house. Once I got closer to the finishing stages, that is when my wife started to take more interest and got involved with the finishing touchs and selection there of. I must admit I found it a bit of a struggle when I started as nothing is straight forward and a job that you think will take a couple of hours takes all day. The good thing is you can now see the light at the end of the tunnel, as the saying goes. Well done to you of both. Cheers Ian

That is so very true, quite startlingly so in fact. I’ve scratch built and rebuilt boats, one off racing motorcycles and classic cars, plus furniture, farm equipment and a host of other things during my lifetime. With every long project, eventually I’ve hit a spot where it gets on top of me, sapping my motivation to carry on with it, to some degree. I have just needed to mock up, dry build or even just prop enough bits and pieces together to be able to sit down and look at it, drink it in and let it talk to my soul, let it be in my mind’s eye. That is always uplifting, the original dream becomes renewed and the details that were previously defeating me present their solutions. I think that I almost love those moments more than finally showing what I’ve created to daylight for the first time. I know that sounds a little odd, admitting it to myself now is actually a bit of a revelation. I hadn’t really thought that much about it during the last 45 or so years of creating things, it’s just always been something I’ve done. Thank you for that, your note brought a moment of clarity. Cheers, R.

What a beautiful episode! With it becoming fall in real life (At least around me), it’s great to see spring pop to life in the background of the boatyard. The boat is really coming together, and all the decorative and finishing touches are going to make it that much more beautiful, and totally unique to you guys. The work put in beforehand is really paying off, and the inspiration and energy the new phase of development has brought to the channel is great to see. Can’t wait for the next one! Fair winds, -J Also I found it funny that in the outro you can hear an EF-18 (Presumably from NAS Whidbey Island) flying overhead. As someone who grew up near bases, I immediately found it relatable that normal tasks were randomly interrupted by strike aircraft.

First off I must say it's nice to see Maya blooming again after butting up with the drudgery and grind (pun intended) of the earlier refit tasks. As for ascetics on the counter top my vote would be for more of a book matched look. A book match is where you resaw a board and lay the two haves down, one clock wise and the other counter clock wise as they come off the saw, this make for a very symmetrical pattern that is (imho) extremely beautiful yet natural and refined. That said the only "right" choice for SM II is the one you two come up with. However you do it, I'm sure it'll look great; as does most everything you two do. Lastly; nice fridge!

A definite YES for the foil tape. If you haven't progressed with the counter yet and can spare the thickness I would suggest using it on the top as well. I can't even venture a guess at how many miles of tape that I have used over the years for foam board ductwork. It works quite well. The only issue could be sweating in humid environments.

I'm sitting at a computer desk I made maybe 3 years ago out of Western Red Cedar. No stain, 2 coats of varnish. The colors of the wood are similar to what you're starting with and over the few years it has mellowed to a dark golden honey color. My only disappointment is it dings _really_ easily.

"This lightens my spirit and I'm so engaged" - that was clear to me about from the start. Maya, your spatial insight is great too. It was fun to see you work in this together. The cedar with its yellow and red sections - when you had laid it out on the table, my thought was, cut it lengthwise and make it all red. The problem with all the boring ;) work Aladino has been doing in the past months, is the same as playing the violin at your level. You need to put 10,000 hours into it and then it's all much easier, and more fin too. With the work on the boat you have to remind yourself constantly, imagine that Aladino tried to learn to play the violin and kept saying, "I'm not good at this." The 10,000 hours (10,000 times for simple tasks) have been well researched and documented. Homo sapiens cannot escape that. Mastering something needs one talent: stubborn persistence and knowing we do not become predictably good before 9,500. Bottom line, this was a real fine episode.

Maya and Aladino, I have enjoyed your episodes from the beginning. As a sailor and a woodworker, I like both sides of your story. I have built many table tops and counter tops over the last 50 years and although I do not know your plans with your countertops, I want to remind Aladino to use balanced construction in their fabrication. I have seen many people try to glue wood to one side of a piece of plywood to make table tops and countertops only to end up with a gull wing after a few months. You need the same thickness of material on both sides of whatever core material you are using to equalize the forces on the top and keep it flat. I am sure you already know this, but if you don't, it is one of the basic tenets of woodworking. You are both doing an amazing job with the refit and the episodes. I look forward to more.

I panicked when I saw the title of this episode. I wondered, "They haven't given up have they?" I'm a subscriber and have followed you for years. I live in North Carolina, USA. I admire the skill and patience involved and dedication to the project and also the violin music which I haven't heard in some time. I'm impressed and a little jealous of someone that follows their dreams. I'm 77 and was reared by very conservative parents who, by virtue of having survived the Great Depression in the early1900s in the US, impressed upon us children the need to get an education and a safe job to hopefully be prepared for the next Great Depression. I did, but after watching you follow your dreams wonder, "What if?" after every episode. Good luck. I wish you Godspeed and am looking forward to your launching Magic Carpet II.

Motorbike muffler pipes produce lots of heat and the plastic fairings right beside the pipes are often become warped or melted over long term use. We combat this by using the same metal tape you used on the one side of the fridge and it works great. I think the metal tape on the side by the stove will do the job. I wonder if it is easier to build the fridge by not prefabricate a complex 3D shape but bring the foam walls in piece by piece after gluing the aluminium panes to the outer casing first.

The countertops will be beautiful and you are correct, you will be able to take a part of the northwest with you in your travels. I’m sure it will become a conversation piece as you meet others, throughout your journey. You definitely hit on my decor belief … never try to match, it shows when something goes wrong. Much nicer to have a piece that looks natural vs planned.

It's called "book matching", when you put the cut back to back so the left side is the mirror of the right side. Guitars use this method all the time and a deep finish brings out the mirror images... you should see it on your violins... I agree with you, on musical instruments it's amazing in small examples, but for a table top it would have to be in 2 pieces, multiple pieces is too much, your choice is amazing...

I like Aladino's practical way of thinking. If it doesn't fit we will just take away some of the hull. If all else failed you could still have build a little outcrop as you did with the garage door🤪 but of course it all worked out just fine in the end!

Congrats on beginning to reap some reward from all the previous sacrifice and labor... to now be able to more palpably express and manifest what lies in your artist's heart. How amazing it will be to see your dream come to life- live, breathe, travel, discover and experience life, sail in your creation! Let that be the motor that drives you to completing the refit.

Hi you two yachty addicts. I have been watching your videos for years and thank you for the great entertainment. Loved your interview with the winner of round the world sailer. I am a South African living in NZ and we are very proud of her. Cape George's are great yachts thumbs up guys.
