FINALLY! This E31 Gets A Minty New Rear End!

In today's episode, we FINALLY install the Rear Suspension. Thank goodness for the lift because this would have been terribly difficult without that flexibility!
The Kapton Tape I use "K A P T O N" is shown below. Not expensive, and is a really good buffer for the sway bar bushings.

Overall I'm very pleased with the way the rear suspension turned out, from all of the new pressed bushings and bearings, to the rebuilt CV joint, to the painted parts, powdercoated springs, and painted sway bar.
I really love how this project is lining up. Can't wait to dig into E-brake rebuild, caliper paint, and front/rear brake installation! More to come, so stay tuned!!

What ratio LSD are you using bro? Looks very clean underneath. Good job turning things around under there!

For NOW, I have the 3.15 from the E32 750iL. However, I plan to purchase a set of 3.64 gears that may be better suited for the S85 high revving nature. But for now i'm leaving the diff as is to see how I like it! Good question!

It's a great diff honestly. I had one in both of my e34 540/6. Plays much better with the 6 speed. Sure beats the open diff that came in it. All you have to do is swap input flanges in the e34's. The diff and swapping the heavy ass dual mass flywheel for a ltw one, made all the difference in the acceleration.

Awesome video - thanks Frank! Quick question- I noticed u used the spiral bushings - did u do this for all of them? Also what’s the issue with the polyurethane ones (reason I ask is I’ve got all of mine with them and was wondering if it’s worth me changing them all out for spirals) Thanks

I own a 1992 E31 850i which I am upgrading by rebuilding the engine as a 6.0L 450 HP with a MegaSquirt ECM and a Tremec Magnum 6-sp manual and the usual suspension upgrades. I would really like to install a rack and pinion system as you present. Is it possible to purchase a kit from you? Or, send the car to you? (I am in NC). Thanks, Andy

What kind of rear sway bar is that? I've never seen an adjustable bar for the E31.

I was going to go DME/KEY/CAS, but decided to spend the money and go SCS Delta Tornado 2 so it's a completely tunable standalone system.

Great progress Frank. Btw did you check the vanos pump(inside the oilpan)and the vanos high pressure line on this engine? The pump gets play above 90k miles and the hose starts leaking very bad, inside the braided line piece! Hey Nico! I plan to replace the braided line when I do the rod bearings next month, so i'll do them together. I'll take a closer look at the pump though. I haven't given that any thought, good point thanks!!

I don’t want to be negative, nice job, but your lower suspension arms, the banana is upside down. So left have to go right and visa versa. Sorry. 😁

Good thought but.....I thought about this ALOT. It’s a RHD rack, inverted and is positioned in front of the axle. Trust me - when I steer right the wheels turn right. Watch my intro video on my RU-vid home page. Works perfectly. Most drag link box steering on older BMWs have the spindles in front of the axles as opposed to most all other BMWs who have them behind the axles

Garageaholic don’t think we talk about the same... or maybe my English isn’t good enough. 😁 are we talking about the rear axle? I mean suspension arm 33 32 1 135 134/135. On all 8 series I’ve done the arm in routing on top of the long arm 33 32 1 090 549.

@@thomasnijs521 Thomas, I think you're right! Those arms need to bow UPWARDS, not DOWNWARDS. So flipping them Left and Right, would do the trick. Sorry, I misunderstood. Good job and thank you for your very valuable advice. Thanks for being a fan and setting me straight!
